How to treat a child’s cough: drugs and folk remedies

Cough (in children) is a protective reflex reaction of the body, manifested in the form of a rapid, jerky exhalation, which ensures the elimination of phlegm, pathogens, and foreign bodies from the respiratory tract. Regulation of this reflex is provided by the brain and local receptors of the airways. It is not an independent disease.

A physiological cough occurs as a result of the accumulation of mucus formed during the life of a healthy person, and is considered normal.

The appearance of a pathological cough indicates the development of a disease, an allergic reaction, or the entry of a foreign object into the respiratory system.

The presence of cough in children requires mandatory monitoring of their condition, identifying the exact cause of the cough reflex, and determining its nature. Traditional medicine offers many effective ways to eliminate this problem.

Warm drinks for coughs in children

As a result of inflammatory processes, sputum is formed, the removal of which is facilitated by frequent drinking. The liquid allows you to relieve a sore throat, replenish the lack of water in the body, and reduce body temperature in case of hyperthermia.

Warm milk is an effective remedy for treating children's cough. It is effective for infectious diseases, as well as for cough reflex of allergic etiology. Various drinks are used to improve the condition:

  • Fruit, berry, vegetable fresh juices, juices, jelly, compotes, fruit drinks with the addition of honey or sugar.
  • Viburnum decoction: 10 g of berries are brewed with boiling water (200 ml) and simmered for 5 minutes on the stove. After cooling, add honey.
  • Anise infusion: 1 tbsp. l. anise seeds are mixed with a pinch of salt and poured with a glass of water. The product should be boiled for 2 minutes, cooled, and honey (1 tsp) added.
  • Tea with raspberries (dried leaves, stems, berries, in the form of jam), lemon, honey.
  • Mineral water that has a slightly alkaline reaction.

Any drink should have an optimal temperature for the child’s body - from 32 to 39 degrees. The amount of fluid a child consumes significantly affects the effectiveness of diluting the resulting sputum and accelerating its elimination.

Treatment of dry cough in children

A dry cough is characterized by the absence or insignificant amount of sputum produced and is considered unproductive. The main function of the drugs prescribed for such a cough is to convert mucus into a liquid form to facilitate its separation.

Lack of necessary treatment can cause the accumulation of sputum and its penetration into the lower parts of the respiratory system, which will lead to complications of various types.

The use of traditional recipes must be agreed with a doctor and accompanied by drug therapy.

Folk remedies for dry cough

Alternative medicine is effective when used in the early stages of development of the cough reflex. In this case, it is recommended to use products with expectorant and mucolytic properties:

  • Honey (1 tsp), soda (on the tip of a knife), and butter (0.5 tsp) are dissolved in milk. The frequency of use of this drink is not limited.
  • Black radish is chopped into cubes, placed in a jar, poured with honey and infused until the vegetable juice is released. The resulting syrup is taken up to 6 times a day in a dose of 1 tsp. for the reception. A prerequisite is that the prepared product must be used within 24 hours; fresh portions are prepared daily.
  • 1 tbsp. l. Coltsfoot plants are brewed with boiling water (1 cup). The cooled broth is filtered through a piece of gauze and consumed on an empty stomach up to 5 times a day at a dose of 1 tbsp. l. for the reception.

After the dry form of cough changes to a wet form, you must stop taking these medications. The use of traditional medicine recipes is not allowed if the child has an allergic reaction to any of their ingredients.

Rinse for dry cough

Gargles in the presence of a non-productive cough can reduce the severity of pain in the throat, eliminate dryness and soreness, and prevent further development of inflammatory processes. The optimal frequency of the procedure is 4 times a day. The following methods are used for gargling:

  • Sea salt (1 tsp) should be dissolved in a glass of boiled warm water. The resulting volume of solution is used in 1 session.
  • Soda (1 tsp) is added to a glass of warm water and stirred until completely dissolved. This recipe may include 1 – 2 drops of iodine.
  • Propolis infusion (20 drops) is mixed with warm water (200 ml). The drug is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age and in case of allergic reactions to bee products.

For young children, soda and saline solutions can be used as irrigation using a spray bottle. The effectiveness of rinsing increases when optimal conditions are created: an unlimited amount of warm drink, maintaining high humidity in the room and regular wet cleaning.

Treatment of wet cough in children

A wet cough is characterized by the release of a sufficient amount of sputum and is considered productive.

The removal of mucus from the respiratory tract is a sign of a decrease in their swelling and restoration of normal rheological parameters of sputum.

The use of traditional medicine recipes in combination with physiological procedures (inhalations, compresses) against the background of successful treatment of the underlying disease that caused the cough improves well-being and significantly accelerates the recovery process.

Folk remedies for wet cough

Components of natural origin are used as therapeutic agents, which have an expectorant effect and help soften the mucous membrane of the throat. For wet coughs in children, the following recipes are effective:

  • Chopped onions (0.5 kg) are poured with boiling water (1 l) and left for 3 hours. Add honey (100 g) to the cooled broth. The prepared solution is used 4 times a day at a dose of 60 ml per dose.
  • Place 1 fig in milk (300 ml), boil for 20 minutes over moderate heat and leave for at least 2 hours. The resulting remedy is taken before going to bed.
  • Dry crushed sage (1 tbsp) is mixed with milk (250 ml), brought to a boil and simmered on the stove for 10 minutes. Fat (badger, pork, goose to choose from) and honey (1 tsp for each component) are dissolved in the cooled drink. The product is used nightly, 100 g.
  • Natural juices (beetroot, carrot, cranberry, black radish juice) 100 ml of each type are mixed with aloe juice (1 tbsp) and lemon juice (50 ml). The resulting liquid is infused overnight. Before using the medicine, you should add honey (2 tbsp.). Taken three times a day at a dose of 2 tbsp. l. for the reception.
  • Pour crushed licorice root (10 g) into boiling water (200 ml) and simmer over moderate heat for 20 minutes. The finished broth is kept for 1 hour and filtered through a piece of gauze. Add honey to the cooled solution to taste. The medicine is taken 1 tbsp. l. per dose three times a day.

The discharge of the resulting sputum will be more productive when combining alternative medicine with water procedures, drainage massage, light physical activity (if you feel well) and regular walks in clean air.

Steam inhalation for wet cough

The main advantage of inhalation procedures is the provision of a local effect on the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, which accelerates the effect of the drug on the affected area and increases the effectiveness of treatment.

The permissible duration of the procedure is 5 minutes. The temperature of the solution used should not exceed 45 degrees to avoid burns to the mucous membranes. Inhalation should be done through the mouth, exhalation through the nasal passages. The course of steam inhalations is three times a day for 5 days. Tools used:

  • Soda (1 tbsp.), dissolved in hot water (1 glass).
  • Chamomile and sage decoction: 1 tbsp. l. vegetable raw materials are brewed with boiling water (200 ml) and infused until cool. This solution is then used to gargle (if necessary).
  • Honey (1 tbsp) and crushed propolis (1/4 tsp) are stirred in water (200 ml) heated to +60 degrees and cooled to the optimal temperature for inhalation.
  • Mineral water with a slightly alkaline reaction.

Steam inhalations are contraindicated in the case of purulent sore throat, elevated body temperature, pneumonia, or in the presence of purulent sputum. Not recommended if you are prone to nosebleeds. It should be borne in mind that inhaling hot water vapor causes dilation of blood vessels and, as a result, increased swelling of the nasal mucosa.

Compresses for wet coughs

Taking medications has a greater therapeutic effect when combined with compresses. Their use helps eliminate spasms, dilate the bronchi, improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation. Means for applying compresses:

  • Mix flour, honey, mustard powder, vegetable oil, vodka in equal proportions. The mixture is laid out in a piece of fabric and placed on the chest or back area, secured with a bandage. The duration of the procedure is 2 – 8 hours (depending on the age of the child).
  • Vinegar is dissolved in water in a ratio of 1:3, honey is added (up to 2 tbsp.). Gauze is moistened in the resulting liquid and placed on the throat and chest, securing it with polyethylene on top. The duration of the session is half an hour.
  • Boil and mash the potatoes (3 pcs.), add alcohol (1 tbsp.), turpentine or sunflower oil (1 tbsp.). Form 2 cakes from the finished mass, wrap them in a piece of gauze and place them on the chest and back. The compress lasts for 2 hours.
  • Cabbage leaves (3 - 5 pieces depending on their size) are heated in a water bath and applied to the back and chest area. Place cellophane or parchment on top and cover with a towel. Session duration is from 2 to 7 hours.

At the end of the procedure, the skin must be wiped dry, removing any remaining product (if any), and the child must be changed into clean clothes.

Treatment of cough with compresses is contraindicated in the case of dermatological diseases or hyperthermia. They are prohibited from being placed on the heart area, acne, wounds, age spots and birthmarks.

The use of this method in infants should be agreed with the pediatrician.

Prevention of cough in children

Prevention of childhood cough involves taking preventive measures aimed at preventing the development of viral infectious diseases in a child. If an illness occurs, following the suggested recommendations helps alleviate the course of the disease.

Preventive measures include:

  • A balanced diet, including a sufficient amount of nutrients, vital microelements, and vitamins.
  • Regular walks in the fresh air.
  • Maintaining hygiene rules.
  • Hardening through water procedures, baths (air, sun).
  • Visiting sports sections and swimming pools.
  • Maintaining optimal microclimate parameters in the children's room: the recommended indoor air temperature is within +18... +22 degrees, humidity levels are 55 - 70%.

If there is a cough of allergic etiology, you should regularly carry out wet cleaning, ensure an influx of fresh, clean air into the room, and exclude possible contacts of the child with household and food allergens. Compliance with the above recommendations makes it possible to increase children's immunity and strengthen the child's body's resistance to pathogens.

Treatment of cough in children with folk remedies

Folk cough remedies for children should be used strictly under the supervision of a doctor. The causes of cough in children can be different, each of them requires its own approach to treatment - a remedy that is effective in one case may turn out to be not only useless, but also harmful in another, so self-medication in this case is unacceptable.

Traditional medicines are not effective enough to be used as primary treatment, so they are usually prescribed as an adjunct to drug therapy.

Traditional medicine should be used to treat cough in children with great caution and only with the approval of a doctor.

Treatment of cough at home with folk remedies in children under one year of age is not recommended; 1 year is the minimum age for using traditional medicine recipes approved by a pediatrician. Folk remedies for coughs for children 2 years old may contain medicinal plants - linden blossom, fennel.

Among folk remedies for cough, children over 3 years old can be recommended recipes based on milk and medicinal herbs. Homemade cough preparations with honey, in the absence of contraindications, are used in children from 4 years of age.

From 7 years of age, it is allowed to use the same folk recipes as for adults, with the exception of those containing alcohol intended for oral administration (tinctures).

When trying to uncontrolledly treat cough in children, the danger may be an erroneous diagnosis, the development of an allergy to the components of the drug, and further progression of the disease with the development of complications.

Dr. Komarovsky points out that in order for cough treatment to be effective, it is necessary, in addition to therapy, to comply with a number of conditions.

The room in which the sick child is located must be well ventilated and the air in it must be humidified; in addition, it must be wet cleaned at least once a day. The air temperature should be cool rather than warm.

To facilitate the discharge of sputum, an enhanced drinking regime is necessary; you can drink water, compote, tea with lemon, fruit juice - any healthy drinks that the child likes.

How to cure a dry cough using folk remedies

The cough can be dry (non-productive) or wet (wet, productive), and treatment approaches will vary depending on the type.

A compress is popular for dry coughs; to prepare it, mix 1 teaspoon of fat, honey and vodka. The child is rubbed with the heated mixture before bedtime and wrapped in a blanket.

To prepare another remedy, you need to boil 200 g of pine nuts (raw and unpeeled) in 1 liter of milk. The mixture is kept on fire for about 20 minutes, after which the product must be cooled, strained and drunk 2 times a day.

A mixture of lard and figs, for the preparation of which 100 g of lard is mixed with the same amount of chopped figs and 5 tablespoons of cocoa. The product is consumed 1 spoon 4 times a day for 4-5 days.

A mixture of honey (300 ml), nuts (50 g), juice of 4 lemons, aloe juice (100 ml): all ingredients are mixed, the product is taken 1 spoon 3 times a day before meals.

For a dry cough, a mixture of carrot juice (50 ml), hot milk (50 ml) and honey (1 teaspoon) helps well. The product is infused for 4 hours and consumed warm.

An iodine grid, which is drawn on the child’s chest with a cotton swab, helps with dry cough. In addition, chest massage is effective for this type of cough.

An iodine grid, which is drawn on the child’s chest with a cotton swab, helps with dry cough. In addition, chest massage is effective for this type of cough.

How to treat wet cough in children at home

With a wet cough, phlegm comes out, and therapy is aimed at facilitating its removal. In children under 5-6 years of age, the respiratory muscles are poorly developed, so it is more difficult for them to cough up sputum than for adults.

To thin sputum and improve its removal from the body during a wet cough, use a product made from freshly squeezed cabbage juice (1/2 cup) and sugar (1 teaspoon). Mix the juice with sugar and drink 1 teaspoon several times a day.

A decoction of 2 tablespoons of linden flowers and 1 tablespoon of thyme is effective. The raw material is poured with 500 ml of water, boiled for about 6 minutes, then left for 20 minutes and drunk with honey instead of tea.

A mixture of honey and butter (2 tablespoons each) is mixed until smooth and consumed 1 teaspoon 3 times a day after meals.

A decoction of 1 cup of viburnum berries: pour the berries into 1 liter of hot water and boil for 10 minutes, then filter. Add 3 tablespoons of honey to the decoction and drink 1/2 cup 3-4 times a day.

The room in which the sick child is located must be well ventilated and the air in it must be humidified; in addition, it must be wet cleaned at least once a day.

A mixture of lemon and honey: crush 0.5 lemons along with the peel, add 2 tablespoons of honey, mix and take 1 teaspoon 3 times a day.

Potato compress: boiled potatoes are mashed into puree, to which 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 drops of iodine are added and mixed. The resulting mixture is placed on paper and placed warm (but not hot!) on the patient’s chest or back, covered with polyethylene or foil on top and left to cool.

Procedures for treating cough in children at home

Children without fever can use foot baths with mustard. To do this, pour 15 g of mustard powder into a prepared bowl of water at a temperature of 37-38 °C. Keep your feet in the mustard solution for no more than 15 minutes. After the procedure, it is recommended to wear woolen socks on your feet.

The cough can be dry (non-productive) or wet (wet, productive), and treatment approaches will vary depending on the type.

Popular methods of fighting cough include inhalations, which can be carried out with solutions of soda, salt, mineral water, infusions, decoctions of medicinal plants or potatoes. It should be borne in mind that steam inhalations should not be performed on young children due to the high risk of burns to the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. They are also contraindicated at elevated temperatures.

To help clear sputum when coughing, your child needs to drink plenty of fluids.

Cabbage and honey compress: a cabbage leaf is smeared with honey, applied to the chest, covered with a sheet of paper and secured with a bandage. After this, the child is well wrapped. Usually such a compress is placed before bedtime.

Garlic compress: 1 clove of garlic is ground with 50 g of oil or fat, the patient’s feet are rubbed with the product, the legs are wrapped.

Warming compress: take 1 tablespoon of mustard, 2 tablespoons of vinegar and flour, 1 tablespoon of honey and sunflower oil. All ingredients except flour are mixed and kept in a water bath until the temperature reaches 40-50 ° C, after which flour is added to the mixture.

Gauze is placed on the child's chest or back, on which the resulting cake is placed. The top is covered with thick cloth or cotton wool, the compress is secured to the body and held for 2-3 hours if the child does not experience discomfort. After removing the compress, wipe the skin with a soft, dry cloth.

If the skin is irritated, stop treatment with this method.

A compress can also be made from mustard powder, honey, vodka, aloe juice, interior fat (1 tablespoon each), which are heated in a water bath, after which flour is added to the mixture. The procedure is the same as for the previous compress. If there is no internal fat, it can be replaced with sunflower, olive or corn oil.

Steam inhalations should not be performed on young children due to the high risk of burns to the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. They are also contraindicated at elevated temperatures.

Let us remind you once again that before using any folk remedies for cough in children, you should consult a doctor, since self-medication can seriously aggravate the patient’s condition.

When trying to uncontrolledly treat cough in children, the danger may be an erroneous diagnosis, the development of an allergy to the components of the drug, and further progression of the disease with the development of complications.

Quick treatment of cough in a child at home

The baby coughs, and this is always bad. If it is not a cold or an infectious disease, then you can eliminate this unpleasant phenomenon at home using proven methods that were used by our grandparents.

Parents are undoubtedly interested in how to quickly cure a child’s cough at home, but they should be warned that this cannot be done in one or two days.

It will still take some time, because the components used for this must, first of all, be safe for children.

Causes of cough in children

The coughing process is completely physiological, as it is protective in nature, protecting the respiratory tract from the accumulation of dust particles, microscopic foreign objects, and also mucus. If a child coughs periodically throughout the day, this does not mean a serious illness. In this way, infants get rid of maternal milk or saliva from entering the respiratory system.

It is important for parents to pay attention to whether the cough is accompanied by other unpleasant symptoms, for example, fever, runny nose, headache. Sometimes even the absence of a fever in a child does not guarantee that a cough is not a sign of some disorder in the body.

It could be:

  • pneumonia;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • inflammation of the trachea and other diseases of the respiratory system;
  • respiratory diseases;
  • dysfunction of the digestive organs;
  • reaction to allergens of plant, animal origin, chemicals, if the child is taking any medications.

In all of these cases, as a rule, a wet cough is observed, the symptoms of which are the quality of the sputum. It is this biological substance that can indicate the origin of the cough:

  • if it is watery, almost transparent, this indicates inflammation of the mucous tissues of the respiratory canals;
  • when there are bloody impurities in it, most likely there is tuberculosis or functional heart failure;
  • when the sputum has a putrid odor and contains pus, it is an indicator of an abscess.
  • with asthma and bronchial inflammation - sputum is heterogeneous, viscous, containing clots and lumps;
  • when the sputum has a putrid odor and contains pus, it is an indicator of an abscess.

A dry cough can occur with diseases such as diphtheria, false croup, influenza, inflammation of the pharynx and larynx, and whooping cough. It is usually abrupt, reminiscent of a dog barking.

This cough does not go away in a child, but can develop, while the larynx swells and it becomes difficult for the baby to breathe. Children, from infancy to five years old, often suffer from this type of cough with false croup. This disease cannot be treated at home - it is better to consult a doctor immediately.

In some cases, even the absence of a fever in a child does not guarantee that a cough is not a sign of some disorder in the body.

When a child needs medical help

Even when sputum is discharged with a wet cough, self-medication can worsen the child’s well-being.

Parents need to know in what cases it is impossible to do without a doctor:

  • if after coughing the child begins to vomit;
  • if a cough occurs during sleep and such attacks cannot be stopped;
  • in addition to the fact that the baby coughs, wheezing and wheezing can be heard when he breathes;
  • pain in the child’s chest accompanied by a cough is a dangerous combination;
  • the sputum has a greenish tint or contains blood;
  • the baby develops shortness of breath;
  • The cough remains for a long time (15-20 days) with intensive treatment.

As for the phenomenon of coughing after sleep, which occurs in the morning, in infants this is a natural action to get rid of mucus and tears, but in other cases, the prerequisites for it may be diseases of the nasopharynx, bronchial asthma, disruption of the gastric pylorus, allergic the body's response to stimuli.

Cough often becomes a residual symptom of past diseases, however, if this pathology is ignored, various complications are possible. That is why it is important to consult a doctor for any infectious or cold-related ailments, especially when it concerns children whose immune systems are not yet perfect.

However, quite often the baby simply coughs up unnecessary “garbage” in his lungs, or this phenomenon remains after suffering from laryngitis. How to quickly cure a child’s cough at home, and with the help of what means that will be harmless to him?

There are several such treatment methods and all of them are worthy of the attention of parents, since it is advisable to act comprehensively.

It is important to consult a doctor for any infectious or cold-related ailments, especially when it concerns children.

How to quickly cure a child’s cough at home

When a child has a coughing attack, parents can easily help him cope with this trouble, and sometimes even prevent its onset. There are several methods to quickly get rid of a cough at home.

There are some helpful steps you can take to do this:

  • the air in the nursery should not be too dry, since coughing is caused by insufficient humidity; for this, you can put a three-liter jar of water in the corner of the room or buy a special fountain;
  • When putting him to bed, you need to make sure that the baby’s upper body is at some elevation compared to his legs - this will make it easier for the baby to breathe.

When the baby coughs, you need to place your face down on your lap and give a light massage to the back, kneading and gently tapping on it. Sometimes it is enough to induce the gag instinct by touching the inner wall of the throat with a spoon - this will stop the attack.

Many people do not know how to treat a child’s cough. Various procedures and folk remedies are suitable for these purposes.

These can be compresses, inhalations and wraps.

  1. Inhalation is convenient to carry out at home, and this method is extremely simple - the child inhales steam over a bowl of hot water, to which plant ethers, medicinal herbs, and special products prescribed by a doctor can be added.
  2. Herbs such as linden with oregano, chamomile and sage, or eucalyptus with menthol and calendula are great for warming up the nasopharynx.
  3. A simple way is to mix a few drops of iodine tincture and a spoonful of soda into hot water - the recipe is suitable for thinning phlegm and noticeably making it easier for the baby to breathe.

But moms and dads need to know that this procedure cannot be performed if the baby has a high fever, heart and vascular disease, or an allergy to herbs or ethers. This method should also not be used by children who have a tendency to bleed or are suspected of having bronchitis.

For infants, wraps with a diaper or towel, previously soaked in diluted mustard, are used. The solution must be squeezed out and the cloth wrapped around the baby’s chest and back. Then you need to wrap the baby in a warm blanket or blanket.

The whole procedure takes about four minutes, after which the mustard is washed off the skin, wiped dry, and the child is put to bed. For preschool and older children, you can simply place mustard plasters on top of gauze to prevent burns.

As a compress, potatoes are boiled in their jackets, mashed to a puree and mixed with turpentine, alcohol and any vegetable oil, one spoon per three medium potatoes. Two flat cakes are molded from the cool mixture and placed warm on the chest and back. They must be kept for at least 60 minutes.

How to cure a child’s cough using traditional methods:

  • Chamomile brewed with honey or a drink made from heated milk with the addition of natural honey and baking soda are good for coughs;
  • You can give children who are one year old a mass of grated onion pulp with honey or a small piece of butter mixed with it - this softens the mucous membranes of the throat, the onion disinfects the tissues of the pharynx, and attacks quickly pass;
  • the same positive effect is observed if you infuse honey with radish juice, placing it inside the vegetable and letting it stand for half a day in the dark; children drink the resulting juice in a small spoon three times a day;
  • Half an hour before each meal, children can be recommended to drink a tablespoon of steamed plantain leaf, steeped for five hours.

In an unfavorable environment, everything is also more or less clear - it is necessary to improve the environmental conditions (get rid of carpets, ventilate rooms more often, use humidifiers, change your place of residence if necessary).

But in the first two cases, folk remedies couldn’t come at a better time. Moreover, they can be used both as an independent type of cough treatment, and in combination with medications.

  1. The types of cough can be classified according to many criteria, but in relation to a child, only two of them are of undoubted interest and the greatest relevance.
  2. These include:
  3. ✔  Dry cough.
  4. ✔  Moist cough.

A dry cough is often a harbinger of illness, but can also occur during the course of colds or viral diseases.

It is the most tiring and dangerous for the child.

It is characterized by the following features:

  • Frequency of urges, when you constantly want to clear your throat.
  • Paroxysmal cough, when the cough cannot be relieved for a long time.

Steam inhalations are used if the baby has a dry cough, and the mucus is viscous and there is little of it, so it does not come away. The purpose of inhalation is to improve blood circulation in the membranes of the respiratory organs and moisten mucus so that it comes out faster.

Typically, inhalations are prescribed for bronchitis, laryngitis, tracheitis and other diseases. Inhalations are carried out in different ways:

  • On herbal decoctions. They are made from chamomile, sage, oregano, juniper, raspberry leaves and other medicinal herbs. First, a decoction is made, then it needs to be poured into a bowl and the child should be seated over it, covered with a towel.
  • On soda and salt. These are simple methods of inhalation: put 3 tablespoons of sea salt or a spoonful of soda in a glass of hot water.
  • With essential oils. Suitable oils include juniper, eucalyptus, and Altai cedar. It is enough to add 3 drops to the usual amount of water.

For children's inhalations, it is prohibited to use medications without a doctor's prescription. To make inhalations convenient, you need to buy a special device - a nebulizer.

Inhalations for children are performed in compliance with the following recommendations and rules:

  • When the baby is calm. Half an hour after an active game.
  • The session begins one hour after the child has eaten.
  • You should not breathe deeply; you can get burned by the steam.
  • The liquid should not be boiling.
  • The child is not allowed to talk during the session.
  • Session duration is 5-10 minutes.
  1. There are times when a child cannot be inhaled:
  • When there are purulent foci. For sore throat, sinusitis, purulent discharge when coughing.
  • If false croup is suspected. If you have a dry, barking cough and difficulty breathing, you need to call an ambulance. Inhalations can be carried out with warm saline and mineral water.
  • At high temperatures they are prohibited - this can provoke an even greater rise.

It is important to follow the presented requirements so as not to harm the baby. Home remedies for coughs should be given to small children with caution. If your condition worsens, you should immediately consult a doctor.

Massage for a child

Drainage massage is effective. It can be performed on both infants and older children. It is required for those babies who are not yet able to cough on their own. Any mother can perform it, which requires following the sequence:

  1. Place the child on your lap so that the butt is higher than the head.
  2. Stroke the back, making movements from bottom to top.
  3. Tap the baby's back with your fingertips without touching the spine.
  4. Let the child lie down, wrapped in a blanket. The sputum will begin to disappear quickly.

Half an hour before the session, you need to drink an expectorant or take an inhalation. Massage should not be performed at fever. The presented actions are performed three times a day for 5 minutes.

In severe cases, they are used together with drug treatment. To heal as an adult, you should use the folk remedies described below.

Folk remedies for dry cough

Often a cold is accompanied by a dry, barking cough without sputum production, which makes breathing difficult and worsens a person’s general well-being. To remove phlegm, you need to soften the mucus, then it will come out quickly and easily. The most effective recipes for dry cough are:

1. Licorice root is great for dry coughs and sore throats. Pour a spoonful of the ground root of the plant into an enamel bowl, pour in a glass of boiling water and bring to a boil. Let stand for 2 hours and strain. Drink a spoon 4-5 times a day before meals.

2. Ginger with sugar is the best cough remedy, but only adults can use it for treatment.

Mix 200 g of fine granulated sugar and a spoonful of ginger in a bowl, moisten the mixture with water and place on low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until a viscous mass forms. Eat ½ teaspoon 2-3 times a day.

3. Ginger and mustard. Mix ginger and mustard powders in equal quantities. Add a couple of spoons of honey to them.

You can take the resulting mixture 3 times a day to reduce the intensity of attacks. It should be noted that this is the best expectorant for dry cough.

4. Decoctions of marshmallow root, coltsfoot leaves, onions, and apples are good for dry coughs.

5. In this case, it is also recommended to eat more raspberries, lingonberries, cranberries, and black currants. They contain not only a huge amount of vitamins, but also natural antibiotics.

They also help relieve intoxication, which is a sure companion of a cold. Any berries are suitable: fresh, frozen, dry.

Compresses

Compresses for colds are the surest remedy for home treatment. A good compress can turn a dry cough into a wet one in one day. Of these, the most effective two recipes are distinguished.

1. First, boil the potatoes until tender and place them in several bags, where they can be mashed. Place these bags on the back and chest and secure. The patient should lie down under a blanket and stay there until the puree cools down.

2. The second is to take cotton wool and soak it with vodka, or alcohol. Apply cotton wool to the throat area and cover with film so that the alcohol does not evaporate. Tape it all with a bandage to your throat.

To speed up the release of sputum, inhalation is required. Procedures with sea salt and soda, onions and garlic, pine needles and various herbs are useful for better expectoration. Essential oils of cedar, eucalyptus, lavender and mint help well.

  • Sometimes a dry cough does not go away for a long time, and attacks end in vomiting - this indicates a complication after a cold, accumulation of mucus in the nasal cavity, untreated pneumonia or heart problems.
  • This symptom is common in bronchial asthma, and in the presence of blood discharge it may indicate tuberculosis or oncology.
  • If there are similar symptoms with a severe cough, medical attention is required immediately.
