Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrence

Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrence

The cough can be either dry or wet; the cause may be ARVI or inflammation at the initial stage. If a person is often tormented by a cough during a conversation, then it is necessary to consult a doctor for a diagnosis.

Causes of spasm

A cough that gets worse during a conversation can be a consequence of various diseases. In other cases, this phenomenon is associated with adverse environmental influences. The causes of cough when speaking may be as follows.

Post-infectious period

Infectious lesions of the ENT organs

Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrence

The causes of cough during conversation are varied, and treatment should be aimed at eliminating them.

This is an infectious disease that occurs mostly in children. In the first stages, the disease does not cause any unpleasant symptoms, there is no malaise, and appetite does not disappear.

But over time, the cough becomes stronger, the attacks increase, sometimes causing nausea and vomiting, in severe cases reaching respiratory arrest.

Simultaneously with these symptoms, the patient’s temperature rises and he feels weak.

Gastroesophageal reflux

The cause of the disease is the low tone of the gastric sphincter, which causes acid to enter the esophagus. These masses irritate the laryngeal mucosa, causing a cough reflex. This condition worsens when the patient begins to talk.

The phenomenon known as “smoker's cough” is very common in people over 35 years of age who smoke a large number of cigarettes per day. As a result, pathological changes in the mucous membranes occur. The attacks occur throughout the day.

The only manifestation of the disease is a cough, which explains the difficulty in making a diagnosis. It can change in character, be accompanied by sputum, or be dry, paroxysmal or sporadic.

The diagnosis is made by testing for bronchial hyperactivity. A person begins to cough after being in a dusty room, walking in cold air or during intense physical activity.

If the patient has an individual intolerance to any substances, then an increasing cough begins from interaction with them. An exacerbation of the disease begins during the flowering period of plants; other provoking factors are the hair and fluff of pets, chemicals, perfume, and food. Treatment will be taking antihistamines and eliminating contact with the irritant.

Diseases of the cardiovascular system

Wax plugs in ears

Receptors sensitive to cough are also located in the ear, so cough may be present in diseases of the auditory organs.

Oncological neoplasms

Very often, a cancerous tumor is accompanied by a cough; in the first stages it is almost invisible and produces clear sputum. As the formation grows, the spasm becomes stronger, and the attacks last longer; blood can be seen in the sputum.

Effect of drugs

Medicines for heart failure and hypertension cause a side effect of coughing when talking.

Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrence

Only a qualified specialist can determine the exact cause.

If coughing during a conversation rarely bothers the patient, then there is no need to worry and see a doctor. Since the reason is insignificant and you can get rid of it yourself. If the syndrome torments a person constantly over a long period, you need to seek medical help.

How to avoid cough spasm

Coughing during a conversation is often caused by various diseases. Therefore, if a person has a tendency to develop colds, then it is easier to prevent them rather than engage in long-term treatment.

Measures to prevent colds and flu:

Coughing during a conversation can torment a person for various reasons. The nature of its appearance is a normal physiological process that serves to cleanse the respiratory system.

Why does a cough start when talking?

As a rule, a dry cough during conversation occurs due to dry air in the room or due to the concentration of a large amount of dust. But the cause of a cough does not always lie in the environment. It is possible that dryness and irritation of the throat arose as a symptom of some disease. To identify the true causes of breathing problems, consult a doctor.

Causes of cough when talking

Let's look at the question of why a cough starts during a conversation in more detail, and tell you the main causes of inflammation.

Acute respiratory diseases

If a dry cough appears after inflammation of a cold or flu, then the patient is diagnosed with a post-infectious condition.

A cough of this nature can last from one week to several months .

To avoid the risk of developing a chronic disease, the patient must immediately receive comprehensive treatment and get rid of periodic coughing with the help of medications.

In addition to coughing, the patient may experience a runny nose . A spasm when speaking may occur due to mucous secretions flowing into the throat. As a rule, this process occurs only during conversation, but can occur at night when a person is sleeping.

How to treat a cough at night can be found in this material.

The cause of coughing when talking may lie in a serious infectious disease called whooping cough. Despite the fact that in the modern world this disease is quite rare, it has not been completely eliminated. The risk group includes young children.

Coughing at this time is considered unproductive and quite severe. It can cause vomiting, nausea, and headaches. In addition, patients note a pause in breathing.

Smoker's cough

Nicotine use is the most common symptom that occurs during communication. Most often it is diagnosed in people over forty years of age who smoke more than ten cigarettes per day.

“Smoker’s cough” occurs due to a serious disruption of the mucous membrane of the throat and larynx. As a rule, attacks intensify in the morning and continue to torment the patient throughout the day.

You can learn how to cure “smoker’s cough” by reading this article.

Allergic reaction

The psychological discomfort that occurs when coughing also plays a role. It can intensify coughing attacks, which will worsen the patient's condition.

In addition, coughing may occur as a natural reaction to inhaling excessively cold air.

To eliminate the reaction, the patient must identify and eliminate the cause of the cough . After this, the patient is prescribed medications, the names of which can be found here.

If the allergic reaction is not treated in time, there is a risk of developing a dangerous disease in the form of bronchial asthma. If the disease manifests itself exclusively as dryness and itching in the throat, it is quite difficult to diagnose inflammation.

Spasms may be accompanied by mucous discharge or, conversely, be unproductive. In addition, the patient suffers from severe coughing attacks, which intensify during communication.

The presence of the disease can be determined by performing a test for bronchial hyperactivity. As a rule, the disease is aggravated by contact with allergens in the form of dust, dirt, building materials or by inhaling excessively cold air.

Cardiovascular diseases

A common cause of cough when communicating is considered to be vascular and heart pathology. In case of heart failure, there is a risk of disruption of proper blood pumping, which leads to congestion in the upper respiratory tract.

This fact causes swelling of the mucous membrane, which causes severe irritation of the receptors. Against the background of the process, the patient notes the formation of severe spasms and cough, which manifests itself in a dry form.

In addition, the patient’s heart rate increases, shortness of breath, weakness, and poor health occur.

Side effects of medications

Sometimes coughing during communication can occur due to long-term use of medications. Typically, patients suffering from heart failure and hypertension complain of this symptom.

To eliminate an unpleasant symptom, it is enough for the patient to reconsider the course of treatment and replace those drugs that cause throat irritation.

Oncological diseases

It is especially important not to delay going to the doctor if your cough is accompanied by bloody discharge. More detailed causes of hemoptysis can be found here.

Sulfur plugs

Oddly enough, one of the most common causes of frequent coughing when talking is the presence of wax plugs. Due to the fact that cough receptors are located directly in the middle ear, the accumulation of wax masses causes severe spasm.

Attacks can be eliminated by removing sulfur secretions using specialized medications. To do this, doctors advise purchasing “Remo-Vax” or “Uhonorm”. In addition, the ears can be washed. How to carry out the procedure correctly is described here.

Standard treatment

After examination and analysis, the patient is prescribed the following treatment:

Treatment of cough while talking involves taking full procedures. Therefore, some doctors advise using alternative medicine methods. You can find out how to cure a cough in an adult using traditional methods here.

Cough when talking: reasons why, how and how to treat, cough in an upright position

The reflex process in the form of coughing, which occurs during a conversation, can greatly disturb the patient.

It causes serious discomfort, pain and severe attacks that lead to tears and cause respiratory dysfunction.

This process is not only unpleasant, but also dangerous to human health, so if possible, drying out the mucous membrane should be avoided.

Coughing during communication can appear in different cases. In order to determine the nature of inflammation in the respiratory system, it is necessary to determine what kind of spasm occurred. By the type and substance of the discharge, the frequency of attacks, and the duration of spasms, the nature of the inflammation can be diagnosed.

Let's look at the question of why a cough starts during a conversation in more detail, and tell you the main causes of inflammation.

Acute respiratory diseases

If the patient suffers from a dry cough, it is necessary to check the condition of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract , since the cause of inflammation may lie in acute respiratory infections. At this time, the patient is disturbed by a paroxysmal cough, which exhausts the patient and causes dysfunction of the larynx.

Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrenceA wet cough appears against the background of bronchitis, acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory viral infections or pneumonia. If the cough is dry, you need to pay attention to the mucous membranes of the throat.

Impaired functioning of the respiratory epithelium is accompanied by high body temperature, chills, fever, lethargy, fatigue, and muscle pain.

In addition, patients often complain about the sensitivity of cough receptors.

To alleviate the condition of such symptoms, the patient is prescribed physiological procedures in the form of rinsing the throat, gargling, warming and other methods.

In addition to coughing, the patient may experience a runny nose . A spasm when speaking may occur due to mucous secretions flowing into the throat. As a rule, this process occurs only during conversation, but can occur at night when a person is sleeping.

How to treat a cough at night can be found in this material.

Whooping cough

The cause of coughing when talking may lie in a serious infectious disease called whooping cough. Despite the fact that in the modern world this disease is quite rare, it has not been completely eliminated. The risk group includes young children.

At first, whooping cough does not manifest itself as acute symptoms, so the diagnosis of inflammation does not occur immediately . Alarming signs begin to torment the patient on the third day, when the patient refuses to eat, complains of feeling unwell, and notes an increase in body temperature.

You can learn how to cure “smoker’s cough” by reading this article.

Allergic reaction

A dry cough occurs against the background of inflammation of the mucous membrane. At this time, the patient notices dysfunction not only in the throat, but also in the larynx, nasopharynx and trachea . In addition to infectious inflammation, the cause may lie in an allergic reaction or the presence of foreign objects in the respiratory system.

Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrenceCoughing when communicating may occur due to sputum retention in the respiratory tract. At the same time, the person’s voice changes, it becomes more hoarse.

The psychological discomfort that occurs when coughing also plays a role. It can intensify coughing attacks, which will worsen the patient's condition.

In addition, coughing may occur as a natural reaction to inhaling excessively cold air.

Allergic inflammation can occur when the body is personally intolerant to any irritants. Inflammation can be seasonal, when the patient reacts to blooms or dust. In addition, pet hair, household chemicals, cosmetics, perfumes and some food products are obvious irritants.

To eliminate the reaction, the patient must identify and eliminate the cause of the cough . After this, the patient is prescribed medications, the names of which can be found here.

Asthma

If the allergic reaction is not treated in time, there is a risk of developing a dangerous disease in the form of bronchial asthma. If the disease manifests itself exclusively as dryness and itching in the throat, it is quite difficult to diagnose inflammation.

Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrenceIf the cough is paroxysmal, undergo an examination of the lower respiratory systems. Probably, the inflammation formed due to the accumulation of mucous secretions.

Oncological diseases

The worst thing is if the reason for coughing during communication lies in the presence of benign or malignant neoplasms. Since oncological diseases are almost always accompanied by severe coughing attacks, the patient needs to undergo a detailed diagnosis.

Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrenceDry cough most often occurs in patients suffering from laryngitis or pharyngitis.

It is especially important not to delay going to the doctor if your cough is accompanied by bloody discharge. More detailed causes of hemoptysis can be found here.

Standard treatment

To determine how and with what to treat a cough when talking, the patient should undergo a diagnosis and determine the true causes of the cough. There is no need to panic if such a symptom occurs once, but if it occurs periodically, you should not postpone visiting an ENT doctor.

After examination and analysis, the patient is prescribed the following treatment:

  1. You can eliminate phlegm during productive inflammation with the help of mucolytics - “Lazolvan”, “Ambroxol”, “Mukaltin”.
  2. But before starting treatment with drugs that improve the outflow of mucus, thick discharge should be thinned . For this, the patient is prescribed “Bromhexine”, “Pectussin”, “Solutan”.
  3. If the reason lies in an allergic reaction, use drugs that suppress histamines - Diazolin, Loratadine, Clarisens, Fenkarol, Lomilan.
  4. If a cough occurs when talking against the background of viral development in the respiratory system, medications such as Relenza, Tamiflu, Peramivir, Amiksin are needed.
  5. To get rid of the inflammatory process, along with other drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs - Acnecutan, Methyluracil, Nasonex, Oxycyclozol.
  6. If the cause lies in a bacterial infection , powerful antibiotics “Chloramphenicol”, “Levomycetin”, “Imipenem”, “Meropenem”, “Ertapenem” are needed.
  7. For infectious inflammation, it is enough to use cough suppressants - “Gerbion plantain syrup”, Bronchipret”, “Pertussin”, “Termopsol”, “Stoptussin-Fito”, “Pectusin”

Treatment of cough while talking involves taking full procedures. Therefore, some doctors advise using alternative medicine methods. You can find out how to cure a cough in an adult using traditional methods here.

Conclusion

A cough during communication does not always occur against a background of a viral, cold or infectious nature. In some cases, dryness and itching occur during an agitated state. Therefore, if the cough does not torment the patient with frequency and pain, there is no need to worry.

Hello, Alexander. You need to know the nature of your cough - for example, paroxysmal, suffocating, wakes you up at night, whether phlegm comes out when you cough, whether shortness of breath bothers you, whistling when coughing, breathing.

You also need to conduct an auscultation (listen to your lungs), if necessary, perform an x-ray of the chest organs, a general blood test, and sputum. There are many reasons for cough. We need to figure it out.

If chest pain appears and continues to bother you, you should urgently consult a doctor!

I injected an antibiotic and it went away within a month. But with a new acute respiratory infection, everything is all over again. The cough starts after taking a warm bath, food, water, a quick conversation, then it goes away. Tests, heart, stomach are normal. There is no cough on the street.

What do you advise?

November 17, 2013

Igor Valerievich Shidlovsky answers:

We won’t figure it out in absentia.

It is necessary to go to an ENT specialist (adequate) for an examination (including videoscopy of the ENT organs) to exclude postnasal drip syndrome and traces of inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, tongue, glottis, and larynx from exposure to acid/bile.

Do an FGDS to exclude reflux (GERD). Perform spirography to exclude broncho-obstructive syndrome. And also an immunogram. Next, an examination by a general practitioner/family doctor to synthesize and analyze the information received.

Cough when talking and possible causes of its occurrence

Why is there a constant cough?

The symptom itself is an altered sharp exhalation, which acts as a protective reflex of the body to irritation of the trachea or larynx. Inflammation of their mucous membrane occurs in three stages:

  • first it swells, and the body begins to respond to irritation of the respiratory tract with a cough reflex, but there is nothing to push out yet, no sputum is produced;
  • when the inflammatory process resolves and the dead surface layer of the epithelium is rejected, the cough becomes productive and wet;
  • when the mucous membrane of the larynx and trachea is restored, the products of inflammation cease to be released, so all symptoms disappear, which means recovery.

If the symptom continues to torment for a long time, then this indicates a weak immune system or a more serious illness. Among them the following stand out:

  1. Pneumonia and pleurisy. Accompanied by attacks of suffocation, pain in the chest, and fever.
  2. Measles, whooping cough, false croup. These diseases are characterized by a long-lasting reflex cough, which is often convulsive in nature, so that one even has to resort to antitussives.
  3. Pulmonary tuberculosis. A very serious illness. A characteristic sign of tuberculosis is a painful cough, sometimes with the discharge of blood.
  4. Pharyngitis, laryngitis, tracheitis. The cough in this case is long-lasting, debilitating and “barking” in nature.
  5. Worm infestations, gastroesophageal reflux, and professional costs can also be the causes of frequent coughing attacks.
  6. Oncological diseases of the respiratory system. Cancer of the throat, mucous membrane of the bronchi, trachea, lungs, heart, aorta is accompanied by a prolonged cough, dry throughout the entire time. If a symptom does not go away for a long time, bothers you day and night, then this is a reason to consult a doctor and not self-medicate.

Coughing in adults: why does the symptom appear and how to get rid of it? - Cough

Coughing is a symptom that you want to get rid of as soon as possible.

Quite often, when recovering from colds or due to some unfavorable factors, an unpleasant symptom such as coughing in adults occurs. Of course, it does not pose a significant danger to life, however, it significantly worsens its quality.

The materials in the article will help answer questions about why such a symptom occurs and what ways can be dealt with.

The cough reflex itself can have both a physiological and pathological nature. A physiological cough is necessary for the timely removal of mucus from the lumen of the respiratory tract. Quite often, for example, you can encounter physiological coughing in a child during teething.

  • You need to understand that a pathological cough, if it is productive (wet), plays an important role in recovery: with its help, mucus is removed from the lungs, due to which the disease recedes faster.
  • If an adult has a cough or coughing, what signs of disease are they in this case?
  • A list of the most common reasons is presented below:
  1. Professional activities related to hazardous industries.
  2. Inhalation of toxic substances.
  3. Smoking and the process of quitting long-term smoking. Coughing may continue for several months.
  4. Past respiratory diseases of a cold nature, tracheitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, pneumonia. Coughing and a hoarse voice, for example, are often combined with laryngitis.
  5. Allergic diseases. Ingestion of an allergen, which often includes household allergens, pet dander, plant pollen, and aggressive substances, can cause coughing in both adults and children. Often this symptom is combined with allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis.
  6. Oncological pathologies.
  7. Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract: gastroesophageal reflux. Regular heartburn can also provoke coughing attacks.
  8. Osteochondrosis. Coughing with osteochondrosis can be caused due to pinching of certain nerve structures.
  9. Disturbances in the functioning of the cardiovascular system (in particular, aortic aneurysm, heart failure).
  10. Respiratory failure.
  11. Hereditary pathologies: cystic fibrosis.
  12. Bronchiectasis.
  13. Bronchial asthma.
  14. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  15. Tuberculosis.
  16. Nervous system disorders.
  17. Unfavorable environmental conditions.

Only an experienced doctor can correctly determine the cause of coughing in a patient. After carrying out all the necessary diagnostic measures, the specialist identifies the provoking factor and takes everything for its successful therapeutic correction.

It is better to quit smoking to avoid coughing

So, what is the connection between coughing and neurology?

Coughing, which occurs due to nervousness, is often found in patients with stressful conditions, depression, excessive nervousness and increased excitability. This symptom can be explained by irritation of brain structures that control the manifestation and severity of the cough reflex.

Stress can cause coughing

Coughing that occurs in this way is also called neurogenic. No somatic reasons play a role in its appearance.

Attacks of dry cough can occur during nervous overexcitation; the symptom manifests itself more intensely in a stressful state. When the effects of stress factors are eliminated, the coughing stops. This cough does not occur during sleep.

Standard cough treatment methods are not used to eliminate neurogenic cough. In this situation, medications prescribed by a psychotherapist are used to correct a nervous disorder.

Most often these are sedatives, but more serious medications can also be used. In any case, a doctor should prescribe adequate treatment.

Treatment tactics

After diagnosis, the attending physician must select the correct tactics for therapeutic correction of the condition when a constant cough appears. The purpose of treatment depends on the provoking pathology.

To correct the condition, the following measures are taken:

  1. In the case of a cold-like cough: identifying the causative agent, prescribing antibiotics or antiviral agents, as well as mucolytics and expectorants.
  2. For allergic pathologies: limiting contact with the allergen, prescribing antihistamines.
  3. When smoking: giving up the bad habit, inhalation, drinking plenty of fluids (see Smoker's cough: how to get rid of it yourself).

The remaining pathologies, the list of which is given above in the causes of coughing, should be subject to detailed diagnosis and specific treatment. Often, the course of treatment for diseases that provoke coughing continues for a long time.

It is important to strictly follow the doctor’s prescriptions, take medications strictly according to the instructions and not self-medicate. Violation of the recommendations can lead to a significant deterioration of the condition and the development of complications.

Examination by a doctor and auscultation are important to identify the provoking cough.

To somewhat speed up the process of healing from constant coughing, you should adhere to the following recommendations:

  1. Drink enough liquid. It is recommended to drink warm tea, herbal infusions (breast teas, thyme, oregano are especially useful), mineral water.
  2. Maintain a favorable indoor microclimate: regularly ventilate rooms and monitor air humidity.
  3. Avoid contact with potential allergens and toxic substances.
  4. Perform inhalations regularly. It is useful to do the simplest steam inhalations with a soda solution or herbal decoctions. Decoctions of chamomile, eucalyptus, and calendula have a healing effect. The price of herbs in the pharmacy is low, but the benefits are undeniable.

Inhalations will help eliminate coughing

The photos and videos in this article will help you understand the reasons for the appearance of such a symptom as constant coughing. Getting rid of it is not always easy, but it is important to follow all the measures recommended by a specialist, and then recovery will come faster.

Considering the large number of diseases, the symptoms of which include a dry cough, there are such a large number of disorders accompanying cough.

We present the ones that occur most frequently:

  • Wheezing.
  • Fatigue and general malaise.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Headache.
  • Nasal congestion and runny nose.
  • A sore throat.
  • Hoarseness.
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck.
  • Gastroenterological disorders (nausea, vomiting, sometimes diarrhea).
  • Fever in the evening.

The symptoms described are the most common and coincide with typical symptoms of influenza-like illnesses. As a rule, in such cases, a dry cough is observed only in the acute stage of the disease, and over time it becomes “productive”, with the release of copious sputum.

Less frequently, other associated symptoms may appear:

  • Bad breath.
  • Chest compression and pain.
  • Difficulty breathing and feeling of lack of air.
  • Fatigue and tiredness, even at rest or after minimal effort.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Skin rash.
  • Weight loss for no obvious reason.
  • Anorexia.

With even less frequency, serious symptoms are observed that require immediate medical attention:

  • Fever with a high temperature that consistently exceeds 38°C.
  • Severe difficulty breathing and shortness of breath.
  • Dry, metallic and painful cough, which is accompanied by pain during breathing.
  • Difficulty swallowing, accompanied by severe pain.
  • Speech problems.
  • Continuous urge to urinate.
  • Swelling of the legs and lower extremities.
  • Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) and a feeling of heart in the throat.

Possible causes of dry cough are all those diseases that have it as one of the symptoms. As already mentioned, there are a lot of such diseases; below we will list those that are the most common and indicate their main symptoms.
