Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

Cough appears quite often in babies, so many mothers are interested in effective medications that help get rid of this symptom and at the same time have a minimum of side effects. Herbal expectorants, for example, Alteyka, meet these requirements. To ensure that young patients take this drug with pleasure, manufacturers offer a sweet-tasting syrup.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

The medicine is a yellowish-brown liquid with a thick consistency and a peculiar aromatic odor.

To prevent the syrup from losing its beneficial properties when exposed to sunlight, it is sold in a dark glass bottle. During storage, a small sediment may appear in the syrup, but this does not affect its effectiveness.

One bottle contains 100 or 200 ml of medicine, and for precise dosing, a measuring spoon is included in the package.

The component due to which Alteika has medicinal properties is a dry extract obtained from the marshmallow root. In terms of active substances, every 5 milliliters of syrup contains a dose of 7.5 mg. Auxiliary ingredients differ from one manufacturer to another: among them are sugar, methylparaben, citric acid, 96% ethanol and other compounds.

We also note that Alteyka is also available in tablets, which are recommended to be chewed. They have a grayish-brown color and a round shape, and the active ingredient is also dry marshmallow extract at a dose of 100 or 120 mg per tablet. In childhood, this form of medication is used from 3 years of age in the same cases when syrup is used.

Marshmallow roots, which are the raw material for making Alteika, contain many polysaccharides, starch, amino acids and pectins.

These compounds are capable of reflexively stimulating the functioning of the salivary and bronchial glands, which promotes the formation of sputum.

At the same time, such properties of the secretion as adhesiveness and viscosity are normalized, and the activity of the ciliated epithelium and smooth muscles increases, which facilitates coughing up mucus.

In addition, marshmallow extract envelops the mucous membrane, reducing inflammatory activity and accelerating the regeneration of damaged tissues. This effect of the syrup is in demand not only for damage to the bronchi, but also for the inflammatory process in the digestive tract.

The vitamins, oils, microelements and other valuable compounds contained in the medicine also help eliminate nervousness, improve the appetite and sleep of a sick child.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

Most often, Alteyka is used for various diseases of the respiratory system, if their symptom is a cough - both dry and unproductive wet.

This syrup is prescribed for children with tracheitis, bronchitis or laryngitis. In addition, it may be included in the treatment of whooping cough, bronchial asthma and other pathologies.

The drug is also in demand for certain diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, for example, if a child has a peptic ulcer, gastritis with high acidity, enterocolitis or esophagitis.

Typically, manufacturers do not recommend giving Alteyka to children under two years of age, but the instructions for some syrups note that this product can be used even in infants. Indeed, a doctor can prescribe this medication to babies in the first years of life, but it is not worth giving it without consulting a specialist (especially to a baby under one year old).

Restrictions for young patients are associated with insufficient maturity of their immune and digestive systems, which increases the risk of a negative reaction to plant extracts. The use of Alteyka in infants must be supervised by a pediatrician.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

  • There are few restrictions on the use of such a tool. Alteika is not used in patients with hypersensitivity to marshmallow extract or any excipient.
  • The syrup should not be used for diabetes mellitus, since the composition of the liquid form of this drug includes sugar.

There are no other contraindications for treatment with this drug.

Sometimes a child’s body reacts to Alteyka with an allergic reaction, increased production of saliva, or uncomfortable stomach symptoms.

If these side effects occur, you should stop using the syrup and consult a doctor.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

Before giving Alteyk to a child, you need to shake the contents of the bottle so that the sediment dissolves. If the composition contains ethyl alcohol, then the dose prescribed by the doctor is additionally diluted in boiled water, taken in a volume of 10-15 ml.

The product is used before meals in the following single doses:

  • if the child is from two to six years old - 5 ml;
  • if the child is aged 6-14 years, then 10 ml per dose;
  • if the medicine is prescribed to a teenager over 14 years old, then 15 ml.

The frequency of taking the drug is 4-6 times a day, and the duration of treatment is from 7 to 14 days.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

To find out more precisely how often to drink Alteyka and how long a particular small patient should take the syrup, you need to consult your pediatrician.

If the doctor considers it appropriate to use such a medication in a child under two years of age, then the drug is used according to the following scheme:

  • babies of the first year of life are given 2.5 ml of medicine once or twice a day;
  • a child aged from one to two years is given Alteyka in the same single dose, but three or four times a day.

When using an increased dose of syrup, severe nausea or vomiting may occur. It is recommended to give a child with an overdose a lot of fluids and, if necessary, induce vomiting, and then give some kind of sorbent.

If a child is taking any antitussives (drugs that inhibit the cough reflex), simultaneous use of Alteyka is contraindicated. It is permissible to combine such syrup with any other drugs.

The drug is an over-the-counter drug, so there are no difficulties in purchasing it. The price of the bottle is influenced by both the volume of the medicine and the manufacturer.

After the first use, it is recommended to refrigerate the medicine and must be used within 14 days.

As long as the bottle is not opened, Alteyka can be stored at room temperature. The shelf life of sealed syrup is usually 2 or 3 years.

The use of Alteyka in children with non-productive cough receives mostly positive feedback. Mothers praise this drug for its natural base, affordable price, fairly quick action for respiratory diseases and pleasant taste. But many parents consider the high sugar content to be a disadvantage of this syrup.

Among the disadvantages, the occurrence of an allergic reaction is also sometimes mentioned, due to which it was necessary to discontinue the drug and look for a replacement. At the same time, most children like Alteyka and taking this syrup does not cause any side effects.

A complete replacement for Alteika in the form of syrup can be Marshmallow Syrup. It has similar characteristics, the same indications and possible side effects.

Other analogues of Alteyka are:

  • "Gedelix";
  • "Prospan";
  • "Licorice syrup";
  • "Linkas";
  • "Doctor Theiss";
  • "Gerbion";
  • "Pectolvan ivy";
  • "Bronchicum S";
  • "Tussamag";
  • "Bronchipret."

All these drugs are herbal remedies that act on the respiratory tract due to extracts from ivy, plantain, thyme, licorice, primrose and other beneficial plants.

Such medications are presented in the form of syrups and solutions, so they do not cause protest in children.

Many of them can be given even to infants, but choosing a suitable analogue should only be done with a doctor.

General characteristics of the drug

Alteyka is a natural herbal medicine. It contains extracts of proven medicinal plants, and also contains a complex of organic compounds, salts and oils necessary for thinning mucus and expectoration. The syrup substance has a pronounced expectorant therapeutic property, and also has several other qualities:

  • dilutes sputum and successfully removes it;
  • neutralizes pain due to cough syndrome;
  • activates the regeneration process in epithelial cells;

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindicationsSyrup relieves swelling and inflammation in the lungs and bronchi

  • provides relief from swelling and inflammation;
  • reduces the amount of gastric juice produced;
  • prevents irritation in the area of the bronchial tree.

The effectiveness of the drug is due to the fact that it irritates the cough center, and this entails the occurrence of active movements in the area of the ciliated epithelium.

All this contributes to the release of sputum, and an increase in mucus production ensures that it is effectively brought into a liquid state, allowing the accumulated secretion of purulent composition to be removed.

Swelling in the bronchi is relieved and irritation is eliminated.

If we consider the cost, the price range is wide; the final cost depends on the volume of packaging purchased and ranges from 90 to 250 rubles.

Sometimes there is a need to use pharmaceutical compositions against cough syndrome; the most popular “candidates” are the drugs Alte, Altemix, Rubital.

It is possible to purchase pharmaceutical root and prepare an infusion yourself. This complex is also sold in tablet form. Syrup is still purchased most often.

Alteyka anti-cough syrup - instructions for the drug

Home → Home treatment → Respiratory organs → Cough

What is Alteyka made from and how does the syrup work?

Alteika is prescribed as an effective, but at the same time mild and harmless remedy for colds, the instructions for which list all the components of the medicine. Most of the components are natural substances, except for nipazole and nipagin, which are used as preservatives and antiseptics.

The active ingredient is marshmallow root extract. This medicinal mucilage-containing plant contains large quantities of amino acids, polysaccharides, fatty oils, vitamins and other beneficial ingredients. In folk medicine, marshmallow root is used to treat inflammation, not only of the respiratory tract, but also of the skin.

Concentrated marshmallow extract is diluted with distilled water so that the concentration of the finished drug is 1.5 g per 1 liter of water.

Sugar and preservatives are added to the solution; some manufacturers add citric acid to the syrup so that the taste of the medicine is not so cloying.

There are formulations with oregano, thyme, calendula and other medicinal herbs. Descriptions of all components are indicated on the insert.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

This drug helps:

  • mitigation of dry obstructive cough;
  • moisturizing the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract;
  • liquefaction of sputum;
  • facilitating expectoration.

Alteyka has a slight antiseptic effect.

What cough does it help with?

Cough is the body’s protective reaction to irritation of the respiratory tract during infectious diseases. Ideally, a cough should release sputum from the bronchi, containing mucus secreted by the bronchioles, tiny foreign particles (dust and others) and pathogenic microflora (pathogenic microorganisms).

But practice shows that in many colds, a dry, unproductive cough aggravates inflammation.

It further irritates the mucous membranes of the lower respiratory tract, since the body produces a meager amount of sputum.

Incorrect treatment and neglected dry cough can lead to loss of elasticity of the walls of the bronchi, and this risks leading to the development of bronchiectasis.

Antitussive medicine is prescribed depending on what cough needs to be treated. Mucolytics treat dry and unproductive wet coughs by stimulating the production of mucus and thinning thick, difficult-to-clear sputum, while expectorants facilitate the removal of large amounts of sputum from the bronchi with a cough.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

Alteyka syrup is a universal medicine, as it has both mucolytic and expectorant effects. This remedy is prescribed for viral and bacterial infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract:

  • laryngitis;
  • tracheitis;
  • bronchitis, bronchiectasis and bronchial asthma;
  • whooping cough;
  • pneumonia;
  • tuberculosis with bronchial symptoms.

Alteyka also reduces swelling of the mucous membranes, thereby improving lung ventilation.

How to take Alteyka syrup

It is written on the packaging, on the container with the medicine and on the insert how to take the medicine correctly. The box contains a plastic dosing spoon, which makes it easy to use. You should take Alteyka syrup an hour before or after meals. The same rule applies to other medications: if taken simultaneously, this drug may reduce their effectiveness.

Important! The bottle should be shaken before use. The sediment does not affect the quality of the medicine: it is a mixture of plant components. The syrup should be at room temperature.

Adults and children over 14 years old take 1 tbsp. l. every four hours. The doctor may reduce the dosage if objective improvement is observed.

Use in children

Instructions for children are compiled taking into account the age of the child.

Age Dosage How many times a day to take
Up to a year 0.5 tsp. 1 per day
1-2 years 1 tsp. 3 times a day
2-6 years 1 tsp. 4 times a day
6-14 years 2 tsp. 4-6 times a day

For children under one year of age, the dosage can be increased to 1 tsp. with a strong cough. If a child suffers from whooping cough, be sure to take the syrup before bed. If you have an attack of cough at night, you need to wait until it ends and give the remedy after that.

The syrup is used for a course of five days to two weeks. The dosage regimen and dosage may be changed by the doctor who prescribed the treatment.

If the syrup seems too sweet or cloying to the child, you can dilute it slightly with water, while leaving the amount of medicine per dose unchanged. For example, at a dose of 1 tsp. Pour this amount of syrup into a measuring spoon and add boiled water there.

The use of syrup is combined with plenty of warm drinks - this prevents dehydration of the body at high temperatures and stimulates the production of sputum.

For pregnant and lactating women

During pregnancy and lactation, Alteika syrup is used in the same way as all herbal preparations. Before starting use, you need to consult a doctor who will determine the dosage and course of treatment.

Important! If after taking a woman you feel worse or there are signs of an allergic reaction, you should immediately consult a doctor.

Syrup analogues

All Alteika analogues contain marshmallow root extract and differ in other components.

The most common:

  • Mukaltin;
  • Altemix;
  • Rubital.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

Mucaltin tablets are prescribed starting from 1 year of age for bronchitis; small children can dissolve the tablets in warm, sweet water. Altemix is taken from 12 years of age, with caution during pregnancy. Rubital is used to alleviate dry cough in children over 2 years of age.

All Alteika analogues are taken after a doctor’s prescription in compliance with the prescribed dosage and duration of treatment.

Contraindications and side effects

The only contraindication is individual intolerance to any component of the medication. The syrup should be used with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus. Alteika should not be taken simultaneously with codeine and codeine-containing medications.

Overdose is rare, with profuse salivation and possible nausea and vomiting. You need to force the child to drink a large amount of water, and when he vomits, give 2-3 crushed tablets of activated carbon. To avoid an overdose, the syrup should be kept in a place so that children cannot take it on their own.

Important! If the nature of the cough and the composition of the sputum suddenly change, or blood or pus appear, you need to consult a doctor and stop taking the syrup.

The closed bottle should not be kept at temperatures above 25°C. Opened syrup can be stored for no more than 2 weeks in the refrigerator at a temperature of 4-8°C. The price depends on the volume of the bottle and the manufacturer. The cost of syrup ranges from 100-250 rubles.

Alteyka syrup is an inexpensive herbal remedy that softens dry coughs and facilitates expectoration of sputum during wet coughs. Children under 3 years of age who are prone to allergies can take it only as prescribed by a doctor.

Properties of Alteyka cough syrup and application features

A prolonged and painful cough should never be ignored - it indicates that the cold has not been fully treated.

To relieve symptoms, various drugs are used: from tablets to mixtures. One of the most effective remedies is Alteika - cough syrup.

It is necessary to consider in more detail its pharmacological action, the nuances of use, and study the likelihood of adverse reactions.

Features of the composition

Depending on the specific manufacturer, the list of main and additional components may vary. The leading substance is marshmallow root extract, which contains amino acids, fatty oils, and provitamin A.

Additional ingredients include thyme, oregano and even Icelandic moss. Most often they are added by the following manufacturers: Ecoflor, Arterium, Ternopharm. The presence of sugar (or its substitutes) and citric acid makes the taste of Alteyka syrup more pronounced and pleasant.

pharmachologic effect

Regular use of the medicine guarantees a reduction in the inflammatory process in the respiratory tract. Easier sputum discharge is guaranteed, as well as a reduction in coughing attacks.

Treatment of a cold and its main symptom is facilitated due to the pronounced enveloping effect and normalization of the production of gastric juice. The fact is that it can negatively affect the functioning of the bronchi, and its stabilization, on the contrary, improves the general condition.

Alteika syrup is also useful due to its regenerating effect. Thanks to fatty oils and other components, it is possible to quickly restore damaged bronchial cells.

Indications and contraindications

Treatment is carried out with:

  • laryngitis - especially if it occurs accompanied by severe damage to the mucous surface of the larynx;
  • bronchitis - both acute and chronic;
  • inflammation of the trachea;
  • pneumonia (pathological processes in the lungs);
  • bronchiectasis.

The list of indications is supplemented by tuberculosis if it is accompanied by symptoms of an atypical form of bronchitis. The same applies to the childhood form of whooping cough.

Alteyka syrup is effective for mild and moderate forms of bronchial asthma.

However, use is permissible only if there is no allergic reaction to herbal medicines.

Contraindication is the age of the child under two years. However, on the recommendation of a pediatrician or pulmonologist, if it is impossible to use other names, treatment can still be carried out for babies from 12 months.

Another limitation is taken into account: intolerance to any of the components of the product. Experts try not to prescribe medicine to patients who have been diagnosed with any form of diabetes. In such a situation, an alternative drug is selected, but without natural sugar.

Features of application

It is recommended to use the mixture after shaking and eating. The use of the medicine itself is simplified as much as possible due to the presence of a measuring spoon in each package - just pour the mixture into it and drink. For adults and children, the nuances of therapy may vary.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

Treatment for adults

A single dosage of the medicine in this case is one measuring spoon, namely 15 ml of Alteyka syrup. The frequency of administration depends solely on the severity of the disease and the severity of the cough.

According to pulmonologists, for relatively mild conditions it is enough to use the drug four times a day; for the most difficult conditions, the frequency increases to six repetitions. The recovery course can last up to two weeks or until the unpleasant symptom disappears.

Treatment of children

The nuances of cough treatment differ depending on the age of the child.

Age Dosage
From 12 months 2.5 ml three to four times a day
From two to six years Five ml four to six times a day
From six to 14 years 10 ml, no more than six times per 24 hours
From 14 years or more 15 ml, four times a day

It is recommended to continue the recovery course until all unpleasant symptoms are eliminated. This usually takes from one to two weeks.

Treatment of pregnant women

Alteyka syrup is not contraindicated for expectant mothers. However, like other medications, they try to prescribe it as a last resort. Treatment is carried out as carefully as possible, and therefore begins with minimal dosages - 2.5 ml at a time.

At the initial stage of the lactation period, the medication must be abandoned. In the future, its use can be resumed, but after consultation with a pulmonologist and gynecologist.

Adverse reactions

They develop extremely rarely - mainly in cases where the initially prescribed dosages are not followed:

  • signs of allergies - most often expressed in skin rashes;
  • increased salivation;
  • painful sensations in the stomach area (due to irritation of its walls).

If Alteyka syrup was mistakenly prescribed to a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus, then he may experience an increase in blood sugar levels. If any undesirable reactions occur, immediately stop treatment with the medication and contact your doctor.

Alteyka cough syrup: instructions and list of contraindications

Additional recommendations

The product can be used together with anti-inflammatory drugs. This contributes to the fact that the influence of the latter intensifies or becomes longer lasting. At the same time, the root of the plant, being the main component, reduces the likelihood of adverse reactions.

When used together with other antitussive drugs, accumulation of exudate in the trachea or bronchi is likely. That is why it is necessary to consult a pulmonologist about the advisability of their simultaneous use.

Alteyka for cough can be prescribed along with antibiotics. The herbal composition will help increase the ratio of agents in the tissue structures of the respiratory system. To avoid adverse reactions, it is advisable not to carry out treatment for more than one week at a time.

If an overdose occurs, symptomatic therapy is carried out. It is aimed at combating the symptoms of poisoning - stomach pain, vomiting, nausea. The person must be given gastric lavage and adsorbents. If necessary, use antihistamines.

Prices and analogues

If the drug cannot be used, it is recommended to use names with similar ingredients. As a rule, they contain the same active component or have the same pharmacological action. Analogues are Mukaltin, Altemix.

The cost of the product may vary depending on the city and pharmacy chain. On average it ranges from 120 to 180 rubles.

Release form

Alteyka has two pharmaceutical forms of release:

  • chewable tablets;
  • syrup.

Chewable tablets are round in shape with a flat surface and grayish-brown in color. Each has a risk and a chamfer.

Alteyka cough is a thick liquid with a characteristic specific odor. Its color can vary from yellowish to reddish-brown: in a thin layer the syrup has a yellowish tint, in a thick layer it is reddish-brown.

The syrup tastes sweet. During storage, a small amount of sediment may form.

pharmachologic effect

The drug belongs to the pharmacotherapeutic group of expectorants (expectorants).

Like its analogues, it helps to reduce the viscosity of the resulting sputum and accelerates the process of its removal from the respiratory tract .

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Marshmallow root is included in the category of expectorants of natural origin with a reflex effect.

The mechanism of action of natural expectorants is that, when they enter the body, they irritate the gastric mucosa , and this in turn provokes:

  • reflex enhancement of the function of glands located in the submucosa of the bronchial (serous-mucosal glands);
  • sputum produced ;
  • changes in its viscosity (under the influence of expectorants, sputum thins out and becomes more fluid, which significantly facilitates its excretion).

The main effects for which marshmallow are:

  • expectorant;
  • moderate antitussive;
  • anti-inflammatory;
  • enveloping.
  • The medicinal properties of the plant are due to the high content of mucous substances in its roots: they make up approximately 35% of the chemical composition of the marshmallow root.
  • Mainly mucous substances are represented by polysaccharides (sugar colloids) pentosans and hexosans , which during the process of hydrolysis form monosaccharides, pentose , galactose and are characterized by the ability, swelling in aqueous infusions, to increase in volume.
  • Thanks to this feature, marshmallow root , released with the secretion of the bronchial glands , has an enveloping effect and covers the mucous membranes and skin with a thin layer of a kind of protective film.
  • This layer remains on the surface for a long time and serves as a reliable barrier against the aggressive effects of harmful factors:
  • excessively cold or dry air;
  • irritating effects of food particles;
  • desiccation, etc.
  1. In addition, the resulting mucous-polysaccharide complex adsorbs well the waste products of microbes and viruses and toxins that are released by affected epithelial cells ; it also inactivates these toxins and prevents them from contacting the mucous membranes .
  2. Under the protective film, the activity of the inflammatory process is significantly reduced, the inflammatory plaque softens, tissue swelling decreases, spontaneous tissue regeneration , and surfaces affected by erosions and ulcers .
  3. In addition to the polysaccharide complex, the chemical composition of marshmallow root also includes:
  • starch (37%);
  • natural amino acids essential for the human body: L-aspargine (from 2 to 19.8%) and betaine (up to 4%);
  • sugar (8%);
  • pectins (from 11 to 16%);
  • fatty oils (from 1 to 1.6%);
  • carotene;
  • lecithin;
  • phytosterols;
  • mineral salts;
  • uronic acids.

Chewable tablets:

  • have a moderate antitussive effect ;
  • help reduce the number of coughing and their intensity;
  • helps normalize altered bronchopulmonary secretion ;
  • sputum viscosity and improves its adhesive properties;
  • facilitates the removal of mucus from the lower parts of the respiratory tract to the upper ones, thereby promoting better expectoration .

Moreover, the tablets belong to the category of non-toxic drugs and do not provoke the development of a local irritant effect.

The syrup, prepared from marshmallow root , is a complex herbal medicine. Its main active ingredients are a complex of polysaccharides , pectins , starch and amino acids .

Once in the gastrointestinal tract cough syrup :

  • stimulates the production of secretions by the bronchial and salivary glands ;
  • stimulates the processes of sputum ;
  • helps to normalize the rheological properties of sputum (that is, viscosity and elasticity indicators, which are determined by , glycoproteins , enzymes , microorganisms sputum , etc.);
  • by enhancing the peristalsis of the bronchioles the ciliated epithelium covering the inside of , it helps to increase the rate of mucus transport from the lower parts of the respiratory tract to the upper ones;
  • has a pronounced cytoprotective effect, protecting normal cells from the damaging effects of aggressive factors and activating the processes of regeneration of the mucous membrane ;
  • has an anti-inflammatory effect.

In addition, the syrup reduces gastric secretion . Moreover, the duration and severity of the gastroprotective effect completely depend on the acidity of the gastric juice : the higher they are, the longer and stronger the gastroprotective effect.

This is due to the fact that the viscosity of mucus of plant origin increases when it interacts with hydrochloric acid contained in gastric juice .

Data on the pharmacokinetic parameters of the drug are not provided by the manufacturer.

Reviews about Alteyka

Reviews about Alteyka syrup for children, which can be found on the World Wide Web or heard from the lips of mothers who treated their children with it, are mostly positive.

Many note the main advantages of the drug:

  • its effectiveness (which is not inferior to the effectiveness of more expensive and more advertised antitussives);
  • no side effects;
  • ease of administration;
  • pleasant taste (which makes it easier for small children to use);
  • availability.

However, despite the fact that cough (including Alteyka) are considered the most “childish” pharmaceutical form of antitussive drugs, many experts are inclined to believe that due to the sugars, alcohol and preservatives they contain (in particular, methyl parahydroxybenzoate E 218) you still shouldn’t get carried away with them. Especially when it comes to treating children.

Before purchasing the drug at a pharmacy, you should consult your doctor.
