In children and adults, a viral wart on the heel can appear suddenly and begin to cause discomfort, and sometimes even severe pain. What are the causes of warts and how to get rid of them.
Why do heel warts appear?
A growth on the sole with a black center and rough edges is usually called a wart, but if it is located on the foot, then the term spinule can be used. A subcutaneous flat wart can occur in a child or an adult and is caused by the human papillomavirus.
More than 80% of the population is already infected, because it spreads quickly and is transmitted through household contact, sexual contact and from mother to child.
What to do with this virus and whether it is possible to completely get rid of it has not yet been fully established, but there are already ways to restrain its activity in the body and eliminate the symptoms of the disease - warts.
Spines on the foot appear in a variety of places - on the toes, between them, on the heel or on the side surface. Heel warts are the most common and can be quite difficult to live with because your feet hurt when you walk. It’s easier with spines on the fingers, but they are also unpleasant for adults and children, because this rough callus prevents them from feeling fully healthy.
Stages of appearance of warts on heels
The consequences of exposure to the human papillomavirus are varied, but the first signs are always associated with the appearance of warts on the body. The heel spine does not just appear; the process of formation is facilitated by push factors:
- A person wears uncomfortable shoes that are not the right size, and his feet are constantly in discomfort, which negatively affects the structure of the tissues.
- Varicose veins can become a provoking factor.
- Increased sweating in the cold season when wearing closed shoes and excessive dryness of the skin in the summer lead to the fact that the skin on the heels becomes the most favorable place for the appearance of warts.
- Vitamin deficiency in the autumn-winter period.
- Any decrease in immunity gives the virus the opportunity to manifest itself as warts, and therefore an acute illness or chronic ailments can be a great help for the appearance of growths on the heel.
A bunion on the leg does not appear overnight; it has several stages of development:
- The skin on the leg becomes somewhat rough in a certain place.
- A small black spot appears inside.
- Around the spot, keratinization and peeling begin.
- The spine grows and its center increases in size.
- The roots penetrate into the deep layer under the skin, causing slight discomfort.
- When the thorn has appeared and reached a certain scale, its growth stops and this is influenced by the immune system, it suppresses the virus or simply restrains it.
The consequences of the appearance of bunions on the feet are extremely unpleasant - the leg hurts, the skin is rough, and there is little aesthetic comfort.
A plantar wart may disappear on its own if the person’s immune system is strong enough to reverse the changes.
It is better to suppress the symptoms of human papillomavirus activity in the form of thorns at the very beginning, since over time there will be new formations that will only aggravate the situation and it is better to stop the proliferation of warts before they cover the entire foot.
How can you tell if it's a wart?
People strive to remove growths from their heels immediately after they appear and use all kinds of folk remedies, creams and ointments for this. But before you carry out any actions, you need to find out what kind of growth it is. The heel spine should be differentiated from moles and calluses (even if the growth looks very familiar, you can’t immediately say with confidence that it is a wart).
Moles are brown spots that can be located at the level of the skin or protrude on top of it.
Moles have clear boundaries, a smooth surface and uniform pigmentation.
It is easier to confuse calluses with warts, since they are also rough and the skin around them becomes rougher.
But the main difference between calluses and calluses is that the latter do not have a black center and do not cause pain when pressed.
Warts also do not always hurt, but if the wart is located on the leg for several days, then when walking a person will feel more discomfort every day due to the roughening of the skin.
Diagnosis of warts on the heel
A person can diagnose a splint on the heel on his own, but it would not hurt to carry out several tests as prescribed by a doctor to find out how firmly the virus has settled in the body. To do this you will need:
- Donate blood for HPV to determine the type of virus carrier.
- Submit a piece of the spine for examination to determine how affected the skin tissue is and whether all elements are a benign neoplasm.
If during diagnosis it is determined that HPV is of the oncogenic type, the doctor will advise not only to get rid of the spines on the heel, but also to undergo a course of treatment with medications. If the virus is not dangerous (which is often the case with plantar spines), then the doctor may not prescribe antiviral therapy.
If an examination of the wart tissue reveals malignant tumor cells, the doctor will prescribe urgent surgical intervention to prevent the growth from spreading. This happens extremely rarely with heel warts, but such a possibility cannot be ruled out. After all, could it be that the spine began to degenerate due to frequent injuries? Yes, and this is the most important reason for such rebirth.
Which doctor will you need to use in this case? There are options here: either the therapist will carry out the treatment himself, or he will consult with an oncologist and virologist to select a competent course of treatment.
How to remove a wart on the heel at home?
To remove warts at home, you can use folk remedies. The first rule is that before using any decoction, lotion or compress, you must thoroughly steam your foot in hot water so that the skin on the heel becomes softer. You can rub the pumice stone only around the wart, as strong pressure on the spine can negatively affect the treatment process.
To get rid of an unpleasant growth, a person can use:
- Celandine (it is better if the plant is fresh) - cauterization with the juice of this plant three times a day will help to quickly remove a small wart on the heel.
- Garlic – it’s better to lubricate the spine with a clove at night, but also during the day you should make compresses from a head of garlic, cut in half.
- With the help of potatoes, you can get rid of warts on the foot if you apply a compress of raw grated potatoes for 20 minutes daily.
- Cottage cheese - it is also necessary to make compresses.
- Vinegar - it is better to lubricate warts with it when the entire inside of the foot is covered with growths, since vinegar is good at cauterizing even large growths on the heel, which cannot be said about other folk remedies.
- Onion with vinegar - one onion should be cut in half and kept in vinegar for an hour, then applied to the wart and held for a while.
- Birch bark - it can cure any thorns on the feet.
Diagnosis and treatment should not be carried out at home on your own; it is better to consult a specialist; doctors also approve folk remedies in the first stages, but they will be more competent in suggesting the correct components and their combination.

Medicines to eliminate warts
The most effective method of treating heel growths in most cases is to use medications, since they contain more concentrated compounds and work much more actively. Drug treatment is also best carried out as prescribed by a doctor.
The following medications will help get rid of heel spikes:
- Lapis pencil - the product is easy to use; you need to wet the tip of the pencil and treat the wart with it. The procedure is carried out twice a day until the spine disappears.
- You can use the Salipod patch to get rid of unwanted growths - you need to cut a piece of the patch to size and attach it to the steamed wart, and remove it after 2-3 days.
- Verrucacid cannot be used often, but it kills the virus from the inside, and does not just remove the wart. Lubricate the affected area with the drug once a week or 10 days.
- Cryopharma and similar freezing preparations will help get rid of the spines that are deeply embedded in the heel.
- Feresol helps effectively, but if you accidentally get it on healthy areas of the skin, a scar may remain after cauterization of the wart.
Verrukacid Cryopharma Ferezol Salipod Lapis pencil
A person should not treat himself with all means at once. To achieve the desired effect, it is better to choose one drug from those described above, but use it according to the instructions.
Surgical and hardware methods
When the remedies described above do not help get rid of warts on the heel or a person simply does not want to suffer for a long time, one can use one of the surgical methods.
Reviews
Vitalina, Sochi
I came to the clinic to have a wart removed from my heel with a laser. I looked at the price list and left. I bought some kind of wart-freezing ointment at the pharmacy and smeared it every day at night, everything went away and it cost 20 times less.
Andrey, Ekaterinburg
There was a callus on my big toe, I steamed it for a long time and scratched it off as best I could. Then a doctor friend looked at it and said it was a wart. She recommended a lapis pencil to me, and it really helped.
Kirill, Volgograd
I’m not a fan of going to pharmacies, so I removed my wart on the heel first with potatoes (0 effect), and then with vinegar and garlic. These compresses at night really helped me, but a small point still remained.

Wart on the heel - causes of appearance, treatment and possible dangers when removing it yourself (110 photos)
Very often, the cause of discomfort in the feet is the appearance of warts on the heels. Sometimes they can cause pain when walking and they tend to appear in all people, regardless of age.
Causes
The cause of warts on the heel is usually microscopic cracks that appear on the legs. Infection can be acquired in establishments such as baths, steam rooms or fitness centers. The virus is able to hide its activity for a long time, gradually destroying epidermal tissue.
Over time, neoplasms begin to form, which, after entering the active phase, are quite difficult to cure. Sometimes this takes about a year.
Symptoms
If measures are not taken in a timely manner, the wart begins to progress, disrupting the structure of the upper tissues. This provokes pain when moving.
Symptoms of warts or condylomas do not appear immediately, but gradually. Therefore, it is necessary to remember the main signs so as not to start an infection:
- A smooth spot appears on the surface of the skin, which begins to roughen over time.
- A hardened plaque is formed, which does not stand out relative to the upper layer of the epidermis.
- The affected area of skin begins to grow in height and width, forming a characteristic growth.
- The middle of the new growth has a body color with a bluish or yellow tint.
- A wart does not have the structure of normal healthy skin.
If suspected, a wart can be identified visually. To do this, you need to steam your feet and then rub your heel with a rough brush.
Naturally healthy areas of the skin (the upper stratum corneum) will be removed and problem areas will reveal themselves. A darkened growth will appear that may hurt, burn, or sting when walking. Sometimes, rubbing them with shoes causes slight bleeding.
- For comparison, photos of warts on the heel can be found on the Internet.
Treatment options
Removal and treatment of warts on the heel is carried out in several ways:
- Drug treatment using various ointments, chemical reagents and acids that cause the death of parasitic tissue.
- Surgery involves removing warts surgically using anesthesia.
- Traditional methods are based on the treatment of neoplasms with various herbal decoctions and natural ointments.
Surgical intervention
The most primitive way to get rid of a wart on the heel of a child or an adult is removal using a scalpel and anesthesia. However, there are other, more gentle methods for removing warts from the heel.
Modern medicine has long used laser and ultrasound technologies, but unfortunately they are not available in all clinics. Special medical institutions may offer the following treatment:
- Laser therapy is more of a cosmetic procedure in which tissue is restored using special laser beams.
- Electrocoagulation is caused by cauterization of external growths, which usually leaves scars.
- Cryodestruction is the removal of warts using liquid nitrogen at a temperature of 195ºC. This method is considered the most popular due to its effectiveness and minimal pain.
It is worth noting that the above methods are used only in cases where there are multiple growths and neoplasms on the patient’s body. Such operations can only be performed by qualified specialists.
Drug treatment
This method is considered the most common in medical practice. Treatment is carried out using medications in the form of alkalis and acids, followed by the use of healing and restorative ointments. Among them the following components and solutions can be noted:
- Tretinion, Solcoderm, Kolomak are salicylic acids with an admixture of nitrogen.
- Lapis pencil is a preparation containing silver nitrate. When combined with water, it oxidizes and negatively affects the tissues of the formations.
- Salipod is a patch that is often used to remove warts on a child’s heel.
- Verrucacid is a high concentration solution that helps eliminate the virus. Used to lubricate tumors.
- Kreofarma and Wartner Cryo are medications with a freezing effect. They cause cell death, accompanied by pain, after which the wart can be removed.
- Potassium permanganate and iodine for treating the affected foot.
After treatment with these drugs, it is necessary that the wounds left after warts heal faster. To do this, use various healing creams or ointments.
Home methods
Traditional medicine, in turn, is also an effective method for eliminating tumors. In addition to the well-known steaming of legs and spells, there are many folk recipes that can cope with the disease no worse than expensive medications.
Among these, the following recipes can be noted:
- a mixture of propolis and rowan juice;
- milkweed juice;
- solution of acetic acid and glycerin;
- dandelion juice;
- garlic juice;
- celandine grass juice;
- castor oil;
- wood ash.
- Regardless of what kind of warts may appear on the heel, cauterization in most cases is an effective but painful method.

Treating heel warts at home
Skin tumors of a benign nature - growths of the epidermis, a cosmetic defect. Large warts on the heel cause pain and interfere with walking. Dense formations on the sole appear as a result of infection with the human papillomavirus, its genotypes 1, 2 and 4.
How do warts form on the heel of the foot?
Human papillomavirus infection penetrates through the smallest and noticeable damage to the skin: microcracks, diaper rash, scratches, abrasions. For virions, this is a real “gate” that opens the way through the stratum corneum to living tissues. If the immune system copes with the threat that has arisen, then pathogens will not be able to penetrate the cells, and warts will not appear.
The incubation period between infection and the appearance of the first symptoms of HPV is on average 2–3 months. Often a phenomenon called viral persistence occurs: there are no symptoms of the disease, but the pathogen remains viable in the host’s body for many years.
Poor circulation in the lower extremities, diabetes mellitus, and neglect of foot hygiene rules are factors that increase the likelihood of warts appearing on the sole.
The dense layers of keratin on the feet become wet when sweating and become covered with cracks. A favorable environment is created for the penetration of certain types of HPV into the layer at the border of the epidermis and dermis.
Moisture facilitates this process, so infection usually occurs in public swimming pools and locker rooms, showers, baths, and saunas. Under the influence of a viral infection, living human skin cells begin to reproduce foreign DNA.
The process of growth of all types of warts involves disruption of division and keratinization in the affected tissues. However, skin tumors on the sole differ in shape, they are painful, and are more difficult to treat. A heel wart is flatter than a similar formation on the top of the foot. The dense core grows inside the dermis and irritates the nerve endings.
Difference from calluses
A wart on the heel of the foot often looks like a dry callus or corn. A small yellow or grayish papule appears, then others may appear nearby. The central part is hidden inside the skin, growing towards the dermis.
Symptoms of a wart on the heel:
- severe discomfort, pain when pressing on the formation;
- lack of skin pattern (papillary lines);
- rough surface;
- horny ridge along the edge;
- diameter 2–10 mm;
- height above the skin 1–3 mm.
Endophytic growth is a characteristic feature of this type of formation.
It often happens that several warts merge, creating mosaic forms with bizarre outlines, as in the photo. Black dots are thrombosed capillaries inside the growth.
The central part of the wart may look like a volcano crater. When layers of keratin are removed from the surface, the capillaries begin to bleed.
This is one of the main differences from calluses, seborrheic keratosis and a number of other skin tumors.
Methods of using celandine to treat warts
Based on the characteristic signs, a dermatologist can easily diagnose plantar warts during the first examination of the patient. Examinations and tests can be prescribed only in case of aggressive growth or color change. A biopsy or examination of a tissue sample is performed in cases where there is suspicion of a malignant tumor.
Treatment
The main goal of therapy is to eliminate the symptoms of HPV, that is, warts. There is currently no specific treatment aimed at getting rid of the papilloma virus.
Different techniques, procedures and products do not have the same effect on patients.
The effectiveness of wart removal largely depends on the location of the formation, the state of the patient’s immune system, and the properties of the skin.
Criteria by which the need for treatment of a heel wart is judged:
- damage to a large area of skin;
- desire to get rid of the growth;
- pain, bleeding, itching;
- dysfunction of the organ;
- the patient's immunodeficiency;
- cosmetic defect.
In some cases, spontaneous regression of tumors is possible after some time (from 6 months to 2 years).
You can remove a wart on the heel yourself, using traditional and alternative medicine for this purpose. Many people use ointments, cosmetic liquids, and medicinal patches from the pharmacy. Before applying any product, you need to steam the wart.
To enhance the softening and antiseptic effect, add baking soda and liquid soap to the water. After steaming, cut off the keratinized tip of the growth with nail scissors. Then the wart is disinfected with calendula tincture or alcohol.
Traditional and alternative medicine
Garlic has long been used to treat warts on the heel and other parts of the body. The components of the plant have antimicrobial activity and inhibit cell proliferation caused by HPV activity. The formation located in the heel of the foot can be removed by applying a thin plate of fresh garlic clove or ointment overnight.
In one of the scientists' experiments, external treatment with garlic extract for 4 months resulted in the patient being completely free of warts. At home, prepare an ointment with a paste of peeled garlic, apple cider vinegar and melted pork fat.
This folk remedy is harmless to the skin even with prolonged use. The ointment is applied to the wart overnight and covered with a band-aid.
Prepare a solution containing salicylic acid at home. Mix with crushed pine resin and add nail polish remover.
Salicylic acid is a strong keratolytic agent (at a concentration of 5–15%). Resin is a yellowish viscous mass, tree sap that hardens in air.
Contains acids, resins, terpenes, has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Nail polish remover dissolves dead skin cells.
The solution is applied twice a day, then left on the wart for 3 days. Only after this period have passed, the feet are washed and steamed, and the horny layers are scraped off. Apply the liquid until the growth on the skin is completely removed.
Pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of warts
Ointments or liquids contain alkalis, acids, phenol, dimethyl ether. The last substance is a cryogen - it freezes the skin growth. The aggressive components of the drugs destroy skin tumors, cause death and peeling of healthy skin. This result is observed in approximately 65–85% of cases of use of these medications.
Pharmacy preparations for self-removal of warts on the heel:
- Salicylic ointment, 10%.
- Verrucacid or Feresol.
- Super clean Lekker.
- Salicylic patch.
- Antipapillomas.
- CryoPharma.
- Collomak.
- Dermavit.
Salicylic acid is the main drug for keratolytic treatment of warts.
The content of this ingredient in the ointment or liquid should be from 5 to 60%. To treat a wart on a child’s heel, less concentrated products are used. Just remember that salicylic alcohol and ointment 1–2% have almost no keratolytic effect.
The active substance destroys and dissolves epidermal cells infected with the virus.
Salicylic acid enhances the immune response due to its irritant effect on the skin.
Special patches with salicylic acid (Salipod, Compid, Leuko) are popular among all segments of the population. There may be other components: sulfur, silicone, rosin obtained by processing pine resin.
Apply the product only after steaming the growth on the heel with hot water and cleansing the hyperkeratosis on the surface.
Apply a medicinal patch to the wart and leave it on for 2-3 days. Then the growth is removed and steamed again, and the softened keratin layer is removed. It is necessary to continue removing the heel wart with a salicylic patch until the formation is completely eliminated. Then, for preventive purposes, 3 more procedures are performed. The total duration of treatment is up to 3 months.
Such a minus as the duration of therapy with salicylic acid preparations is compensated by the advantages. First of all, it is safety, efficiency of use is 75%, economic benefits (low price in the pharmacy).
Side effects are rare, although symptoms of an allergic reaction may occur. Pain after applying salicylic acid, ointment, or patch is practically not felt.
The products are suitable for removing warts on a child’s heel.

What causes a wart on the heel and how should it be treated?
Quite often, human papillomavirus infection manifests itself as painful growths on the heels. At the same time, a wart on the heel almost always tends to grow. In this regard, it is better to treat the emerging formation at an early stage of its development.
A feature of a benign heel growth is that in the process of its growth, damage to healthy tissue occurs. This is what explains the painful sensations while walking with constant pressure on the heel wart.
Reasons for the appearance of formations
Human papillomavirus infection is very common in the modern world. Since it is transmitted through contact and household contact, no one is immune from infection. Clinical manifestations in the form of benign skin growths are very unpleasant from an aesthetic point of view.
Warts often appear in areas of high pressure, such as on the foot, and cause pain. Infection with the papilloma virus can occur through tiny cuts and microcracks in the skin. In this regard, the cause of the development of heel warts may be touching infected surfaces with the foot:
- In a public bath or sauna;
- In a swimming pool;
- While wearing someone else's shoes.
Very often, benign skin growths appear on the heels of a child. This is due to the low protective reactions of the child’s body, which are in their infancy. In adults, the risk of developing warts on the heels is much lower. In addition, factors that contribute to the development of warts on the heel include:
- Stress;
- Mental disorders;
- Avitaminosis;
- Poor blood supply to the feet;
- Increased sweating of the feet;
- Wearing tight shoes.
The peculiarity of warts on the heel is that they constantly injure the skin surface, and therefore, there is always a risk of their degeneration into a malignant neoplasm.
Advice! Despite the fact that at the initial stage, a growth on the heel, as a rule, does not cause discomfort and does not threaten health, treatment of a skin formation localized in such a place is mandatory.
Methods for treating heel formations
Modern medicine offers many ways to treat heel warts with medications. But, as a rule, they are effective only at the initial stage of development of skin growths provoked by papillomavirus infection.
Therefore, heel warts must be diagnosed promptly. This is not always easy to do, since the initially benign formation on the heel, caused by the papilloma virus, is very similar to a callus. Only during the development of the formation does the nodularity of the skin surface, characteristic of a wart, appear in combination with pronounced roughness.
Advice! Due to the fact that heel warts grow inside the tissue, the treatment process with medications is always long and requires patience.
Medical methods for treating heel warts involve physical and chemical destruction of skin growths in combination with the use of antiviral drugs. For external use, products are used that are based on lactic and salicylic acid and have a strong keratolytic effect. The following solutions are considered the most effective:
You can also use special patches:
Solutions are applied directly to the surface of the wart several times a day. The patches require constant exposure, so they are glued to the growth in accordance with the size of the damage and worn constantly. The strip of plaster is re-glued after 5 days. For the treatment of formations on the heel, drugs with locally necrotizing properties are also widely used, such as:
- Vartek;
- Solcoderm;
- Feresol.
Advice! The duration of use of the drugs depends entirely on the size of the growth and the depth of its roots.
When treating warts on the heels with medication, in both adults and children, it is necessary to carry out preliminary procedures:
- Steam your leg;
- Treat with pumice;
- Using tweezers, remove the steamed stratum corneum from the growth, which is an obstacle to successful treatment.
Advice! When carrying out preparatory procedures, extreme care should be taken so as not to injure the skin.
If the treatment is chosen correctly, the benign formation on the heel will soon begin to turn black, which indicates the death of the roots. If this does not happen, then you need to contact a medical facility to remove the growth in a more effective way.
Radical ways to remove heel growths
Today, when removing heel growths, both in adults and children, the surgical method is practically not used. Excision of a wart with a scalpel is not always effective and does not exclude recurrences. In addition, when surgically removing a wart, difficulties often arise with wound healing.
Modern methods based on the use of the latest medical technologies, more effective and less traumatic. Today, benign formations can be removed using one of the following methods:
- Cryodestruction, which involves the use of liquid nitrogen;
- Electrocoagulation, using electric current;
- Laser using a laser beam.
The most effective way is to use a laser. Removal is carried out using modern equipment, which allows you to control the depth of penetration of the laser beam, and therefore completely remove the roots of the skin formation, eliminating the occurrence of relapses.
Removing heel warts is a very difficult undertaking, so it is better to take care to prevent their occurrence. To do this, you should strictly observe the rules of personal hygiene, especially in public places. You should remember yourself and convey to your child what is strictly prohibited:
- Walk barefoot in the pool, sauna or bathhouse;
- Use someone else's shoes.
It is important to remember that any wounds on the skin must be promptly treated with an antiseptic. If you come into contact with a person who has warts on their skin, you should wash your hands thoroughly with soap as soon as possible.
In addition, to prevent clinical manifestations of papillomavirus infection, you should eat a balanced diet and ensure that the body receives a sufficient amount of vitamins and beneficial minerals. This approach to nutrition is especially important for a child during the period of developing immunity.

Wart on the heel: treatment and removal methods
The most annoying diseases are those that cause constant discomfort. A wart on the heel is a typical representative of this category. Unpleasant sensations during rest are replaced by severe pain when walking, which makes life extremely difficult.
The victims of the disease are numerous, but not everyone rushes to the doctor, mistaking papilloma caused by the HPV virus for an ordinary callus. However, you should not hesitate - any pathogen that enters the body can become dangerous.
Failure to treat the wart will lead to an increase in growth and increased pain in the heel.
Causes of heel growth
The papillomavirus, responsible for the disease, enters the human body through microscopic wounds on the skin. Having mastered a new territory, it calms down for a while, quietly multiplies, without showing itself in any way.
Peaceful existence can last for several weeks or months. But the slightest changes in the new habitat become a signal for the virus to activate. The result is a heel wart.
Among the main reasons, the following conditions are noted:
- weakened immunity;
- chronic stress;
- acute stage of chronic diseases;
- excessive sweating of the feet;
- uncomfortable, traumatic shoes;
- hypothermia;
- the habit of walking barefoot in saunas and baths;
- varicose veins;
- diabetes.
It has been found that warts occur more often on the heels of children, adolescents and the elderly. The reason for such preferences is decreased immunity.
What does a wart on the heel look like and how is it different from a callus?
Heel warts do not appear immediately.
Poor circulation in the lower extremities, diabetes mellitus, and neglect of foot hygiene rules are factors that increase the likelihood of warts appearing on the sole.
The history of their occurrence can be described as follows:
- Dry shiny crusts are noticed on the heel that look like small calluses. They do not rise too much above the surface of the skin of the heel, their growth is directed inward. Future warts do not cause any suspicion, since there is no pain.
- After a few weeks, the growths on the heel begin to resemble a crater: the skin peels off in the center, and keratinized tissue is visible at the edges. This symptom is not always observed.
- Soon, dark spots are noticed inside the tumors - capillaries with formed blood clots. The diameter of warts is up to 1 cm, but sometimes larger sizes are found on the heels. They are characteristic of advanced stages of the disease.
- Itching and pain appear, the color changes to darker.
- Often, new smaller papillomas appear next to the old lesion. They are called subsidiaries. They can unite into large foci.
Plantar warts (corns or calluses) are not too difficult to distinguish from corns and calluses. They are identified by the absence of papillary lines (skin pattern) on the surface, severe pain when pressed, thrombosed capillaries and a tendency to drain.
Why you need to treat right away
Warts on the heel, sometimes successfully disguised as calluses, require careful attention. In addition to painful sensations, there is a risk of encountering dangerous consequences:
- The tendency for the lesions to grow inward will lead to more intense heel pain, which will make wearing any shoes painful.
- Injuries contribute to a significant increase in the affected area and its spread to other parts of the foot, including the interdigital spaces. Such neoplasms will require complex and lengthy treatment.
- Papillomavirus is contagious, so you can easily “reward” the whole family with the disease.
- Sometimes harmless warts become malignant. In this case, we will talk about the struggle for life. Symptoms of such a transformation are changes in size and color, the appearance of pus, bleeding, and a foul odor.
The disease will not go away on its own, and it can cause a lot of problems. Therefore, there is only one way - timely treatment.
How to get rid of a wart on the heel
There are three methods that are used to destroy heel growths. These are pharmacy, folk remedies and surgical treatment. The effectiveness of a particular therapy is impossible to predict, since much depends on the condition of the individual patient.
Drugs from the pharmacy
Treatment for heel warts begins with the use of available over-the-counter products. They contain aggressive components that cause burns to healthy tissue, so solutions must be applied very carefully. The following pharmaceutical preparations are widely used:
- You can get rid of warts on the heels using a special lapis pencil (Stilus Lapidis). Its active substance is silver nitrate. It is very convenient to use this product - the surface is moistened with water and applied to the wart twice a day. The procedures continue until the lesions completely disappear.
- Salicylic ointment is approved for the treatment of children and during pregnancy. Apply to warts 2-3 times a day. In addition to Salicylic ointment, preparations with nitric, retinoic and triacetic acids are used - Collomak, Solcoderm, Tretinoin.
- Salipod is a patch that perfectly softens the layers of a wart. Only this method requires preliminary steaming of the heel. Apply Salipod for 2-3 days, after which the exfoliated skin is removed from the surface and Oxolinic ointment is applied 3 times a day. Treatment takes a week. If the result cannot be achieved, the procedure is repeated. The drug is not recommended for children under 10 years of age.
- Verrucacid contains tricresol and phenol. Suitable for treating keratinized skin. Apply it to the steamed skin of the heel repeatedly for an hour. The procedure is repeated after 10 days. Due to toxicity, Verrucacid is contraindicated in children.
- Wartner Cryo and Cryopharma are cryotherapy drugs that freeze warts. The procedure is completely painless, the growths fall off after 10-14 days. This therapy has contraindications - pregnancy, lactation and age under 4 years.
Traditional and alternative medicine
Warts are a disease for which treatment at home is quite effective. The first recipe is the easiest - foot baths with hot water. The duration of the procedure is at least 30 minutes, it is necessary to add boiling water as it cools. Do them twice a day for several days or a week.
In addition, it should be remembered that HPV begins to manifest itself in the form of the formation of various warts when the body’s immunity is weakened. Therefore, as a preventative measure, it is necessary to strengthen the immune system.
Other recipes are also worthy of attention:
- Garlic. Before using it, the heels need a steaming procedure. After softening, apply a piece of garlic to the wart and fix it with a band-aid. It is recommended to do this at night. In the morning, throw away the old garlic and apply a fresh portion. Replacing garlic daily should be the rule for 2-3 weeks. After a month, not a trace remains of the papilloma on the heel.
- Onions with vinegar. For the recipe, use either onions or green onions. It is kept in vinegar for several hours, then applied to the affected skin overnight. Such compresses are done until the papillomas completely disappear.
- The use of acetic acid requires caution, so healthy surrounding tissues must be sealed with a plaster in which a hole is cut that exactly matches the size of the papilloma. The essence is mixed with wheat flour (1:2), the composition is applied to the wart, and the top is also secured with a plaster. This operation is carried out twice a day for a whole week.
- Propolis. Take a small piece of propolis, knead it, and apply it to the wart. It's better to steam it first. Secure the compress with a bandage. They wear it for 2 weeks. Then replace it with a new one, cleaning the top layer of the spine. Thus, chicken callus can be removed in 3-4 procedures. The course of treatment is 1-2 months.
- Celandine. To get rid of warts you need fresh herb juice. The areas are lubricated with it 3-4 times a day. Duration of therapy is a month. You can make an ointment or tincture. In the first case, the juice is mixed with either Vaseline or vegetable oil, in the second - with vodka. The volume of filler should be twice the amount of juice.
There is no universal folk method that helps everyone. Therefore, for greater treatment effectiveness, it makes sense to use several of these recipes at the same time.
Surgical and hardware methods
Sometimes neither drug treatment nor folk remedies can quickly get rid of the disease, but warts cause suffering, and their number is growing. In such a situation, the only reasonable option is surgical intervention. It is possible to remove a wart on the heel using the following procedures:
- Cryodestruction, or freezing. The affected area is exposed to liquid nitrogen at an extremely low temperature (−195.75°C). Despite its popularity, the method has a drawback - the wound heals very slowly.
- Laser coagulation. This procedure is optimal for removing warts not only on the heels, but also on any part of the body. The method is effective, quick and does not cause pain to the patient. After the operation there is not the slightest scar left.
- Radiosurgery. An equally attractive way to eliminate skin pathologies. The instrument is high-frequency radio waves. The procedure has minimal impact on nearby tissues and is absolutely painless.
- Electrocoagulation - removal of heel warts with high-frequency current. The operation does not take much time, is painless, the patient feels only a slight tingling sensation and slight discomfort.
- Excision is surgical removal with a scalpel. A method that is now used extremely rarely.
The wound is treated with an antiseptic, then the patient is prescribed antiviral drugs and immunostimulants. Their selection is individual.
Treatment of heel warts in children
Warts on the heels often disappear on their own. In adults, such relief occurs in 85% of cases. In children, the picture is even more rosy: doctors advise not to take any steps, because the papillomavirus that has settled in a growing body is a temporary phenomenon.
The main thing in the treatment of papillomas in children is strengthening the immune system, which, once normalized, copes with any threat. If there is no improvement, and unpleasant symptoms intensify, you need to consult a doctor, since any amateur activity in the treatment of children is prohibited.
