Anal warts: diagnosis and treatment of neoplasms

The human papillomavirus often provokes the development of a disease such as anal condylomas. This pathology is caused by the sixth and eleventh strains of the virus, and in humans, pointed papillomas are formed in the anal area.

This disease usually does not develop into oncology: it can be successfully treated provided that all prescriptions and recommendations of the attending physician are followed. But without treatment for several years, condylomas grow to enormous sizes, increasing the risk of developing a cancerous tumor.

Characteristics of genital warts in the anal area

Anal condylomas

Condylomas in the anus are formations of pink skin and epithelium that have the shape of papillae; they can merge with each other, forming large growths in the form of cauliflower. Between them you can see healthy areas of the skin, but if a large area is affected, the papillomas merge and close the anus.

Anal papillomas are a disease of the anus of viral etiology, which can number several hundred warts on the anus. Typically, anal papilloma has the appearance of flesh-colored papillae, which consist of lobules and stalks.

Note! Genital warts are prone to rapid growth. If left untreated, they can affect large areas of tissue and grow greatly in size.

Anal condylomas

First, small spots or growths form in the perianal area, which gradually increase in size. They do not cause pain, so a person may not realize that he has a disease.

The appearance of papillomas in the perianal area is not in all cases associated with anal intercourse; the virus can develop in the skin, and over time cover the perineum, groin and anus. Today, about 80% of people are carriers of HPV.

Causes of condylomas

HPV enters the human body in many ways:

  • Sexual tract;
  • Household way;
  • Vertical transmission from an infected mother to her child during labor.

But infection is observed only in 70% of cases. A predisposing factor is the presence of microtraumas of the skin and epithelium against the background of reduced immunity at the site of contact with infection. The risk of developing anal condyloma increases with prolonged irritation of the skin near the anus with feces.

Note! HPV can be found in urine, saliva, semen and mucous membranes. Doctors consider all people who live a regular sexual life to be at risk.

The development of the disease depends on the state of the human immune system. After infection, the virus can remain in a passive state in the skin cells for a long time. When the body's defenses are weakened, the virus begins to actively multiply, forming anal papillomas. From this moment it can enter the environment, and the person becomes a carrier of the infection.

Treatment of bowenoid papulosis

A decrease in immunity can be associated with constant overwork, lack of sleep, frequent stress and emotional tension, the presence of infectious diseases of other etiologies, poor lifestyle, nicotine and alcohol abuse, hypothermia, poor nutrition, and so on.

The risk group includes the following categories of people:

  • Having an STD;
  • Those who enter into open intimate relationships, often changing partners;
  • HIV-infected;
  • Pregnant women;
  • Those with dysbacteriosis, low immunity, lack of vitamins in the body, and constant stress.

Symptoms and signs of the disease

Typically, anal condyloma is located in men and women (photo attached) in the anus and on the epithelium of the rectum. Therefore, patient complaints depend on the size of the formations and their location.

Anal condylomas

Most often, infected people notice symptoms of the disease and consult a doctor when growths on the perianal area become visible. In this case, a person can feel the formations.

Papilloma near the anus shows the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty with bowel movements, pain;
  • Itching and burning in the anus;
  • Bleeding and ulceration as a result of traumatization of growths;
  • Development of psychological and sexual discomfort;
  • Inability to perform anal hygiene;
  • Sensation of a foreign body in the rectum;
  • Formation of discharge, suppuration of growths, which often leads to infection and the appearance of fistulas;
  • Blood impurities in stool;
  • Unpleasant odor of discharge from the anus;
  • Swelling and redness of the anus;
  • Intoxication of the body.

Note! In half of the cases, the disease is asymptomatic, affecting the rectum. This is especially true in the presence of homosexual sexual relations and HIV infection.

If left untreated, the papilloma will spread its shoots to a large area of the skin or mucous membrane, causing the closure of the anus. Very rarely, the symptoms of the disease may disappear on their own, but if the immune system weakens, they will appear again.

Complications and consequences

Possible complication - closure of the anus

Condyloma of the anus very often recurs. After successful removal of growths, there is a high risk of their re-development, since today it is not possible to completely get rid of the disease in medicine.

Doctors distinguish several types of condylomas depending on the risk of their degeneration into cancerous tumors. Anal papilloma is classified as a group with a low risk of developing cancer.

But in the absence of proper treatment, the formation of a malignant tumor is possible, this is especially true in women who have already undergone treatment for oncology of the uterus or vagina.

In men, the pathology can spread to the genitals. In the presence of purulent inflammation, there is a risk of developing sepsis.

Diagnosis of pathology

To make a diagnosis, the doctor first conducts a medical history and visual examination of the perianal area. In this case, growths are found around the anus, which can surround it with one continuous formation of a gray or brown shade, resembling cauliflower in appearance.

  • Then a proctological examination is carried out, during which the condition of the anus, epithelium and muscles of the anus, as well as the rectum, is assessed.
  • The doctor can use anoscopy to assess the condition of the anus under a high-expansion microscope, as well as sigmoidoscopy, which makes it possible to examine the inner surface of the rectum at a level of twenty-five centimeters from the anus.

Biopsy

PCR or ELISA, irrigography and video rectoscopy of the anus, ultrasound, and biopsy are also often prescribed. These methods make it possible to identify the smallest changes in the epithelium of the anus and promptly diagnose papillomas.

It is recommended to undergo examination together with your sexual partner, since sex with condylomas leads to infection.

Other diseases, including cancer, can also contribute to the development of pathology. Therefore, the doctor may prescribe additional diagnostic techniques to make an accurate diagnosis.

The doctor differentiates anal papilloma from diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and squamous cell carcinoma.

Therapeutic measures

Treatment of anal papillomas should be comprehensive, including the use of the following methods:

  • Surgical removal of condylomas. This method can be carried out in several ways: physically using a scalpel, laser, radio waves or liquid nitrogen, as well as chemically, for example, trichloroacetic acid, or interferon injections;
  • Immunotherapy, when medications are used whose action is aimed at increasing the immunity of the body of an infected person.

Note! In medicine today there is no effective method of therapy that would promote complete recovery; there is always the possibility of relapse of the disease.

Surgical removal of the growths is the most commonly used treatment method. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis, the doctor uses an anesthetic before excision of the formations.

Doctors often resort to radio wave surgery, infrared photocoagulation and laser therapy.

Epigenes

These techniques allow you to remove growths in a short period of time without forming scars. After the procedure is completed, the patient leaves the clinic, the doctor prescribes anti-inflammatory and painkillers.

Treatment of condyloma in women

The following groups of drugs can be prescribed as drug therapy::

  • Antiviral tablets Likopid Painkillers: “Epigen”, suppositories “Anestezol”, “Relief”;
  • Medicines that promote tissue necrosis of papillomas: “Condyline”, “Superchistotel”, “Verrukatsid”, “Ferezol” and others. These drugs are not recommended for use during pregnancy;
  • Antiviral agents: Interferon, Imiquimod, Lazoferon, Viferon suppositories, Acyclovir, Likopid, Genferon suppositories, Immunomax injections and others.

Traditional therapy

Often, the doctor allows the use of traditional therapy. One group of products makes it possible to increase the patient’s immunity, and the second - to destroy growths.

Juice from Kalanchoe leaves

The most commonly used:

  • Celandine juice. They treat the affected areas three times a day until the symptoms disappear completely.
  • Garlic. They rub papillomas with it.
  • Kalanchoe leaves. The leaves need to be crushed, make a compress and apply the product to the affected area for several hours.
  • Iodine. Used for cauterization of condylomas.

To boost immunity, use burdock infusion, lemon balm tea, a decoction of marigold flowers or elecampane root. Take one tablespoon of one of these herbs and pour a glass of boiling water, infuse and take daily, one spoon three times a day

Prognosis and prevention

With timely treatment, the prognosis will be good. Doctors usually manage to excise all the growths at one time. In addition to removing anal condyloma, it is necessary to treat concomitant diseases that are sexually transmitted.

Removal of formations makes it possible to get rid of a cosmetic defect, but not from HPV. Relapses of the pathology are observed with a significant decrease in immunity, injury to the skin and epithelium during sexual intercourse, while the virus itself remains in the human body forever.

Spontaneous spread of papillomas, which can form on new areas of the skin or mucous membranes, is also possible. If the pathology has acquired a malignant form, the prognosis will be disappointing.

After treatment of anal warts, constant monitoring by a doctor is recommended in order to promptly remove the growths when they reappear. Women should be regularly examined by a gynecologist and tested for infections. Men should be seen by a urologist.

We must not forget that good immunity is the key to good health, so it must be constantly maintained at a high level, and negative factors that contribute to immune system dysfunction must be eliminated.

It is also recommended to use condoms during sexual intercourse and promptly treat STDs.

Anal warts (in the anus) - what are they, photos, treatment, on the hole, near, which doctor to see

  • The human papillomavirus (HPV) is quite common in modern society, causing benign tumors and serious illnesses.
  • Anal warts are a type of manifestation of a virus on the genitals, when genital warts or dry growths are localized around the anus, directly in the canal and the adjacent part of the rectum.
  • These are neoplasms in the form of pinkish papillae, which can merge with each other and form islands similar to cauliflower.
  • All information on the site is for informational purposes only and is NOT a guide to action!
  • can give you an ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS !
  • We kindly ask you NOT to self-medicate, but to make an appointment with a specialist !
  • Health to you and your loved ones!

Sometimes multiple growths merge into huge conglomerates, blocking the anus.

Anal warts have the following classification:

  • genital warts - elongated papillae, in plural, similar to a cock's comb;
  • neoplasms in the form of papules, which are not characterized by the appearance of elongated finger-like elements;
  • warts in the form of flat spots;
  • Giant Buschke-Lowenstein condylomas are rare;
  • Bowen's disease or intraepithelial neoplasia characterized by damage to the entire thickness of the mucous membrane.

Most often, warts in the anus are caused by 6 or 11 types of virus with a low degree of oncogenic activity.

The culprits of malignant tumors are types 16 and 18, which have oncogenic properties.

The most common method of infection is sexual contact

Methods of infection

Infection with anal warts occurs during sexual intercourse, especially during anal sex, and clinical manifestations of the disease do not appear immediately.

The virus remains in a latent state for a long time, without causing the formation of growths.

Men often suffer from anal warts after homosexual intercourse.

The detection of tumors in one of the partners always indicates the presence of the disease in the other in monogamous couples.

  • Warts are injured and bleed during intimacy, spreading to healthy areas.
  • Fusion of growths is more often observed in people with immunodeficiency or diabetes.
  • An increase in the number or size of warts in early pregnancy can lead to infection of the newborn during its passage through the birth canal, which manifests itself in the form of laryngeal papillomatosis.

A child can become infected through contact from the person caring for him.

If the disease is detected in children, it is necessary to exclude sexual abuse.

According to statistics, more than 40% of pediatric patients suffering from anal warts have been molested.

Symptoms

Clinical manifestations include:

  • cracks on the hole;
  • hyperemia;
  • burning;
  • pain during sexual intercourse;
  • discharge;
  • suppuration;
  • itching

Most patients may not show symptoms.

  • The growths often become infected, resulting in an unpleasant odor.
  • Prolonged infection leads to the formation of fistulas, the release of ichor, pus, causes severe pain and general intoxication of the body.
  • If the patient has HIV, the symptoms increase.
  • New growths are often injured and rubbed by underwear, they hurt during bowel movements, and bloody clots appear in the stool.

Diagnosis of anal warts

Before treating warts, it is necessary to undergo a thorough diagnosis.

  • Examination of the anus and rectum is carried out using a special device - an anoscope, inserted into the canal.

examination using an anoscope

  • The type of virus is determined by PCR testing.
  • To clearly identify the boundaries of the spread of warts, a vinegar test is performed. The anus area is treated with a 3% acetic acid solution, after which the affected area becomes gray-white in color. This is necessary for successful biopsy taking and before removal.
  • Part of the material is sent for histological examination if oncology is suspected.
  • If you have condylomas, you must take a blood test for TORCH infections and a smear to rule out the presence of sexually transmitted diseases.

After diagnosis, the doctor decides how to treat anal warts.

Which doctor should I contact?

  1. Anal warts are diagnosed during consultation with a proctologist, dermatovenerologist and pediatrician.

  2. Since the location of the localization is rarely strictly defined, warts can spread to the genital area, appearing in the vaginal area in women, and affect the penis in men.

  3. In this case, an examination by a gynecologist or urologist will be required.

Treatment of warts in the anus

Treatment of anal warts is aimed at removing them and fighting the virus, which allows for long-term remission.

There are hardware methods for getting rid of tumors that significantly reduce the likelihood of complications and relapses:

  1. laser therapy - evaporation of tissues by the thermal effect of a beam. The disadvantage of this method is that the virus, together with the evaporating particles of the wart, can enter healthy areas of the patient’s skin and cause infection of employees. However, modern clinics use special air purification systems;
  2. electrocoagulation – destruction of condylomas by electric current, after which a scab is formed. It can provoke contraction of the sphincter from pain, so local anesthesia is necessary;
  3. excision with a radio wave knife using a special device that allows you to get rid of the tumor without even touching it. This is the safest method and the least traumatic, no blood is released, the wound is cauterized and heals quickly;
  4. freezing with liquid nitrogen – cryodestruction. The method of destroying tissues with nitrogen is not accurate, the doctor cannot confidently control the depth of exposure, so there is a high probability of wounds and extensive ulcers.

If there are single formations located near the anus, special chemical preparations based on triacetic and other acids (Solcoderm) can be used.

  • The drugs are applied on an outpatient basis directly to the tumor and literally burn it out, causing tissue necrosis.
  • There is a burning sensation and visible scars may remain.
  • Podophyllotoxin is also used to treat external manifestations of papillomavirus.
  • The drug is contraindicated during pregnancy.
  • Cauterization of growths with iodine gives results.
  • The affected area must be lubricated several times a day until the condyloma completely disappears (1-5 weeks).
  • But using iodine at home can cause burns, so it should be used with caution and only if there are single formations on the surface of the anus.

if you have single condylomas, you can use iodine tincture

Destructive methods are combined with immunotherapy.

Based on the immunogram, interferon drugs and antiviral agents (Anaferon, Viferon) are prescribed.

Despite the fact that the likelihood of relapses is quite high (up to 45%), the prognosis for getting rid of the clinical manifestations of the infection is favorable.

Side effects of removal

The main side effect is the appearance of keloid scars.

scar after tumor removal

Often, after using chemical removal methods, deep ulcers can form, scars and scars may remain.

Recommendations

Following lifestyle recommendations will help you achieve more effective treatment results:

  • smokers need to get rid of their bad habit;
  • Alcohol abuse negatively affects the outcome of treatment and weakens the body's resistance;
  • women should visit a gynecologist and undergo a cytological examination of the cervix at least once a year;
  • proper balanced nutrition will help comprehensively strengthen the immune system;
  • physical activity and walks in the fresh air have a beneficial effect on treatment.

examination by a gynecologist

Complications

The most dangerous complication is the development of cancer.

Therefore, there is no need to be ashamed of the delicate problem of warts.

After all, it is better to see a doctor and detect the malignant nature of the tumor in time than to treat oncology, which does not always respond to it and can cause death.

The high risk of spreading the virus contributes to self-infection.

  • Multiple growths significantly affect the quality of life, especially its sexual sphere.
  • Spreading to intimate organs, warts form a crust, become injured, bleed and are often painful. There is no need to start the disease. It is much easier to remove small tumors than to cure large tumors.

Prevention

Prevention mainly consists of regular examination by a specialist.

Using a condom will not protect against infection 100%, but it will significantly reduce the likelihood of contracting anal warts.

Vaccination

Studies have shown that vaccination is the most effective method of prevention in both men and women.

timely vaccination is a reliable method of preventing infection with oncogenic HPV

The drug Gardasil is administered in courses and protects the body from infection with oncogenic types of the virus, which allows you to protect yourself from cancer.

The use of the vaccine in European countries and the USA has shown its 100% effectiveness.

  1. No women were diagnosed with cervical cancer, and no cases of penile cancer were reported in men after vaccination.
  2. The drug can be administered only when the virus is not yet present in the body, namely in childhood, after a blood test for the presence of antibodies to HPV.
  3. It should be understood that treatment alone is not enough.

Only prevention of the disease will help avoid infection and recurrence of the disease. A healthy human immune system is able to contain the virus, preventing it from being active.

  • Therefore, it is important to strengthen the body with hardening procedures and good nutrition.
  • A huge role in maintaining a strong immune system is played by the absence of stress, adequate rest and sleep, and a physically active lifestyle.

Anal Condylomas: 5 Proven Treatments

When papillomaviruses enter the human body, due to their vital activity, they change the structure of the DNA of the skin epithelium. As a result of this activity, various neoplasms appear that are benign in nature.

They differ in their structure (papillary, knobby growths, cauliflower-shaped warts).

The growths affect various areas - the mucous membranes of the oral cavity (on the tongue, soft palate, larynx, tonsils), skin (warts on the fingers and toes, under the armpits, on the eyelids, neck).

Formation of anal warts

The genital area is affected by a certain type of HPV, which causes the appearance of condylomas (pointed, flat and other types of formations). Often growths also form in the anus, near the anus and urethra. Such condylomas are called perianal.

The human papillomavirus has many types (more than 90), but the development of genital warts is caused by only two - HPV 6 and HPV 11.

HPV infection occurs unnoticed and can be secretive. A virus that has settled in the body, at first, may not manifest itself in any way. Gradually, as a result of a malfunction of the immune system, the activity of viruses increases, they penetrate deep into the organs and cause the proliferation of skin cells, disrupting their DNA.

The danger of the disease is that initially benign formations can degenerate, become malignant, causing cancer of the skin or internal organs.

Important! If any growths appear in the anal area, you should immediately consult a doctor to conduct an examination, make a diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment. Degenerating condyloma cells in the anus provoke the occurrence of rectal cancer.

When genital warts appear in the anus, a sick person may be bothered by the following symptoms:

  • feeling of a foreign body in the anus;
  • Wetting of the skin, burning and itching around the affected areas;
  • painful sensations.

Growing condylomas increase in size. In this case, spreading over the skin, they can block the anal area, making defecation difficult and causing pain. As a result of injury, the growths begin to bleed and an unpleasant odor appears.

Attention! If alarming symptoms similar to those described above occur, it is recommended to immediately consult a proctologist. A specialist will be able to prescribe effective treatment.

The disease is transmitted during sexual contact.

The virus can also enter the body if the rules of personal hygiene are violated (using other people's towels, washcloths, other people's underwear), enter the blood through damaged areas of the skin, through kissing when the virus gets into contact with saliva on the mucous membranes of a healthy person. HPV can also be transmitted vertically - during childbirth from mother to newborn baby.

Anal condylomas are growths consisting of pinkish papillae. There may be single or multiple formations. Between the clusters of condylomas there is clean, uninfected skin.

Doctors' opinions on the most effective methods of treating warts and papillomas

The chief physician of Moscow City Hospital No. 62 describes his vision on this matter. Anatoly Nakhimovich Makhson
Medical practice: more than 40 years.

“I have been treating people’s papillomas and warts for many years. I’m telling you as a doctor, papillomas along with HPV and warts can really lead to serious consequences if they are not dealt with.

The human papillomavirus is present in everyone on whose body there are papillomas, moles, warts and other pigmented formations. According to rough estimates, 80-85% of the planet's population has it. By themselves they are not dangerous. The problem is that an ordinary papilloma can become melanoma at any time.

These are incurable malignant tumors that kill a person in just a few months and from which there is no salvation.

Unfortunately, in Russia and the CIS countries, pharmaceutical corporations sell expensive medications that only relieve symptoms, thereby hooking people on one drug or another. That is why in these countries there is such a high percentage of cancer diseases and so many people suffer from “non-working” drugs.

The only drug that I want to recommend, and it is also officially recommended by WHO for the treatment of papillomas and warts, is Papinol.

This drug is the only remedy that has an effect not only on external factors (that is, it removes papillomas), but also acts on the virus itself.

At the moment, the manufacturer has managed not only to create a highly effective product, but also to make it accessible to everyone. In addition, within the framework of the federal program, every resident of the Russian Federation and the CIS can receive it for 149 rubles.”

The following factors can cause the activity of the virus to cause the appearance of anal warts:

  • weakening of the body after suffering a cold caused by ARVI;
  • hypothermia due to wearing inappropriate clothing
  • bad habits (smoking, alcohol abuse);
  • prolonged stressful situations and exhaustion of the nervous system;
  • chronic fatigue;
  • poor nutrition and irregular daily routine;
  • development of vitamin deficiency.

Anal genital warts in the anus and internal anal area affect both men and women. The source of infection is located in the body of condylomas. The only effective treatment for anal condylomatosis is its removal.

Removal of anal warts

You can completely get rid of the papilloma virus using a comprehensive treatment method:

  • removal of growths;
  • maintenance drug therapy (immunomodulatory and antiviral);
  • local treatment (applying special ointments for condylomas to infected areas);
  • taking general strengthening substances (vitamins, decoctions of medicinal herbs, tinctures).

Important! The decision on the method of getting rid of anal warts, the choice of medications and type of therapy is determined by the doctor. The goal of treatment is to achieve stable long-term remission and prevent relapse of the disease and possible complications.

Anal warts can be removed using:

  • destruction using laser (one of the most effective and painless methods of removing tumors);
  • cryodestruction (destruction of the body of condylomas under the influence of low temperatures);
  • radio wave method (removal of growths using waves of a certain frequency);
  • electrocoagulation (destruction of tumors under the influence of current);
  • necrotization of condyloma tissue using chemical liquids;
  • surgical method (removal of condylomas surgically using a scalpel).

Where can perianal condylomas be removed? Such procedures are carried out within medical institutions - clinics, medical centers. Detailed information about the procedure is often posted on the websites of such medical companies.

Before removal, the patient is examined. Biological materials are taken for analysis: blood, urine, skin fragments of condylomas for biopsy and histological and cytological examination. Before removing a tumor, its nature is determined - benign or malignant.

After removal of tumors, the patient is under constant medical supervision and supervision by the medical institution. The wounds formed after removal can be treated at home using antiseptics:

  • hydrogen peroxide;
  • iodine;
  • brilliant greens;
  • alcohol solutions.

Condylomatosis is a frequently relapsing disease. Even after removal of anal warts, there is a high probability of the disease returning.

The papilloma virus is divided into strains with low and strains with high levels of cancer risk. Perinatal condylomas are caused by HPV of low oncogenicity. But, as studies show, recently the risk of degeneration of cells of such condylomas and the appearance of rectal cancer has increased significantly.

Attention! Due to the risk of developing possible complications of genital diseases, it is important to be examined by a coloproctologist as often as possible and begin timely treatment.

During the recovery period after removal of condylomas, and after its completion, medications are taken. The need for drug treatment is due to the fact that it is the only way to prevent the re-development of infection in the body and the formation of new condylomas in the anal area.

For this purpose, antiviral and immunomodulatory drugs are prescribed:

  • Isoprinosine;
  • Acyclovir;
  • Cycloferon;
  • Lycopid;
  • Alpizarin.

Along with therapy with immunomodulators, vitamin complexes are taken, and the sites of removed condylomas are treated with local antiviral agents:

  • ointments (keravort, zinc ointment, rederm);
  • spray (epigen spray);
  • gels (panavir, epigen gel, diprosalik);
  • candles (viferon, genferon);
  • solutions (condiline).

Condylomas in the anus in women and men

  • Condylomas formed near the anus in women can cause cancer of the rectum, cancer of the vulva, vagina and cervix, often leading to death.
  • To avoid such complications, women seek an initial consultation with a gynecologist, who can refer them to a proctologist or coloproctologist for further diagnosis and treatment.
  • Also, the appearance of condylomas near the anus and their degeneration is very often observed in women undergoing treatment for oncological diseases of the reproductive system (cancer of the vagina and cervix).
  • You can prevent the appearance of anal warts in these cases, as well as avoid relapse of the disease, by being under constant medical supervision.
  • Taking general strengthening agents and vitamin complexes, following a daily routine and diet, carrying out hardening procedures, eliminating bad habits, observing hygiene standards, and having one sexual partner can protect a woman from the re-formation of anal warts and other diseases of the genitourinary system.
  • In men, the appearance of anal condylomas can provoke the appearance of precancerous and cancerous conditions of the anorectal area and rectal cancer.

Damaged condylomas can spread to other areas of the skin of the male genitourinary system: the penis area (head area, frenulum), urethra. Degeneration of condylomas can cause cancer of the intimate areas.

Important! To prevent cancer of the reproductive system, if the slightest changes appear in the area of the reproductive organs, a man should contact an andrologist for examination and treatment. If anal warts appear, see a proctologist.

You cannot remove anal warts on your own! This treatment may be harmful. In place of removed condylomas, new, damaged condylomas may appear, which can become inflamed, causing various skin problems and diseases of the reproductive system.

Anal warts: how to treat growths on the anus

  • Dermatologist of the highest category Inna Vladimirovna
  • 33712
  • Update date: December 2019

Anal warts are a type of papillomas caused by the human papillomavirus. Warts can be localized in any part of the body, including the anus. The difficulty of treating such warts is determined by their location, since not all methods are suitable for their removal.

Types and causes of anal warts

Condyloma acuminata is one of the types of anal warts

Anal warts have the following classification:

  • growths in the form of papules (tubercles).
  • Genital warts. They have the appearance of elongated papillae, as a rule, appear in the plural.
  • Flat spots. They practically do not rise above the level of the skin.
  • Buschke-Lowenstein condylomas. They are characterized by gigantic sizes and appear extremely rarely.
  • Bowen's disease. Warts affect the entire thickness of the mucous membrane.

In most cases, warts localized in the anus do not pose a danger, as they have a low degree of oncogenicity.

However, it is recommended to get rid of such growths on the skin, since under the influence of various factors the wart may degenerate into a malignant neoplasm.

In some cases, warts form in multiple numbers, this contributes to complete closure of the anus, requiring urgent surgical intervention.

Warts of any type and location are formed due to infection with the human papillomavirus. This virus may not manifest itself for some time, so a person does not even suspect that he is its carrier. Growths on the skin and mucous membranes appear when the virus enters the active phase. This is facilitated by:

  • decreased protective functions of the body against the background of viral and infectious diseases;
  • presence of bad habits;
  • microtraumas of the skin and mucous membranes;
  • increased sweating;
  • diseases of the endocrine system;
  • autoimmune pathologies.

HPV infection occurs through personal contact with a carrier of the virus, sexually, or through household items. After any factor activates the human papillomavirus, warts will begin to appear anywhere. Growths near the anus are quite common; they require timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Diagnostics

If anal warts are present, an examination is necessary to exclude other infectious diseases.

If warts appear near the anus, the following diagnostic measures are carried out:

  1. Examine the area around the anus, as well as part of the rectum, using a special instrument called an anoscope.
  2. PCR testing, which helps determine the type of virus.
  3. Vinegar test, which is aimed at establishing the boundaries of warts.
  4. If cancer is suspected, a biopsy is performed. The wart microparticle is sent for histological examination.
  5. If the growths are condylomas, a smear from the vagina or urethra is required to exclude sexually transmitted diseases.

After diagnosis and a specialist’s opinion, you can think about how to treat warts. In most cases it is recommended to remove them.

How to get rid of anal warts?

It is recommended to remove condylomas as they cause discomfort

Many people are interested in how to treat papillomas on the anus. Modern medicine offers many methods, the main ones being drug therapy and surgery. Traditional medicine can be used as an addition to the main treatment.

Traditional treatment

Traditional medicine methods are not recommended for use as the main treatment, since the results from such methods have to be expected for several months, and their effect is weakly expressed.

The following traditional methods are used:

  • Cauterization with iodine. It must be carried out extremely carefully so as not to injure surrounding tissues.
  • Wiping the growths with celandine juice. Improper use of celandine can cause burns on healthy skin tissue, so the juice should be applied directly to the wart itself.
  • Garlic compresses. The garlic must be finely chopped, then secured to the affected area with a bandage or plaster.
  • Rubbing with aloe juice. It is an absolutely safe method, but has low efficiency.
  • Rubbing warts with onion juice. It is necessary to wipe at least 4 times a day.

In most cases, traditional healers' remedies cause a lot of trouble for the patient and are ineffective.

Medications

Currently, there are many medications designed to remove papillomas, including warts near the anus. The most effective are the following drugs:

  • Panavir gel. The product has an immunomodulatory effect. This drug is effective for warts of any location; it is also widely used in the treatment of condylomas. It has a small list of contraindications and almost never causes side effects. The course of treatment averages 5 days, but can be extended if necessary. The gel is applied directly to the wart up to 5 times a day.
  • Viferon ointment. It has antiviral and immunomodulatory properties. The ointment is applied in a thick layer to the wart and the surrounding tissue. The number of applications is 3-4 per day. It is necessary to wait until the drug is completely absorbed into the skin. The product is not absorbed into the blood, so it has virtually no contraindications.
  • Vartek. It has a cauterizing effect and must be used with caution. When applying, be sure to use a special applicator. Apply 3 times a day for no more than 3 days in a row.
  • Feresol. The drug coagulates skin proteins. The product is applied with a stick directly to the growth itself. For small warts, one treatment is sufficient; larger ones will require a course of treatment.
  • Gel Solcoderm. The composition contains several acids - oxalic, lactic, acetic and nitric. Applying the drug to the wart causes the tumor to gradually die off. The gel is safe to use even at home. Application should only be done using an applicator.

Before using any medications, it is recommended to first consult with your doctor. This will help avoid unwanted reactions.

Surgical methods

A scalpel for removing anal warts is used extremely rarely, since modern medicine has more gentle methods. A scalpel is necessary when other procedures do not give the desired result. In most cases, this occurs with growths localized over a large area of the skin.

Gentle methods include the following:

  • Laser removal. Laser exposure is considered one of the safest, since the depth of exposure is precisely determined. The procedure does not cause discomfort or pain, and also helps to avoid the reappearance of growths.
  • Electrocoagulation. Warts are removed under the influence of electrical waves. Scars may remain.
  • Excision with a radio wave knife. A safe method that allows you to remove a tumor without blood and without causing pain. Does not require long-term rehabilitation. In most cases, no scar remains.
  • Freezing with liquid nitrogen. There is a high probability of wounds and scars, so this method is rarely used to remove anal warts.

The method of removing warts is selected by the doctor individually. Since it depends on many factors, it is difficult for the patient to choose the appropriate method on his own.
