Inflamed wart: causes and possible consequences of the phenomenon

Warts are an extremely unpleasant aesthetic problem. If such a growth begins to become inflamed and swollen, causing physical discomfort, this causes even more concern and cannot be ignored. The reasons for this phenomenon may be different, but in any case, if the wart has changed, you should consult a dermatologist. Only a specialist will be able to determine how dangerous the change in growth is in each specific case, and will help eliminate the problem without consequences.

What are warts

Warts and papillomas are growths on the skin and mucous membranes. They can be soft, papillary, on a thin stalk, or flat and covered with a hard crust. Their appearance is provoked by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which has many strains, and some of them can cause cancer.

The papillomavirus has a long incubation period - it may not appear at all throughout life. Growths appear in the presence of accompanying factors:

  • Decreased immunity;
  • Lack of hygiene;
  • Stress and depression;
  • Frequent direct contact with other people's warts.

Most often, these growths are harmless. However, even if they do not cause any particular inconvenience, it is advisable to consult a specialist and undergo a course of treatment for HPV. It is impossible to cure the virus completely, but you can prevent the appearance of new formations and other possible consequences.

 An inflamed wart, if left untreated, can cause the virus to spread further throughout the body or develop into melanoma (skin cancer).

Why do changes occur in a wart?

If the wart is swollen and there is redness around it, this may be due to the following factors:

  • Friction on clothes . The growth, located in the armpit, groin area, neck and other “inconvenient” places, is often subject to constant pressure and irritation. It is advisable to remove such formations before signs of inflammation appear. Or you need to reduce this factor as much as possible - wear looser clothes and not allow them to come into close contact with the wart.
  • Mechanical damage . The growth may be accidentally damaged and swell. This is especially true for formations on the arms, legs and hair. There is a very high risk of damaging the wart while combing, working with tools, or kitchen utensils.
  • Chemical burn . Like human skin itself, growths on it do not tolerate interaction with various household chemicals and other aggressive substances.
  • Traditional removal methods . Self-medication of wart formations can lead to various types of inflammation - improvised means are not always able to eliminate the problem. It is especially not recommended to remove growths by tying them with thread or using aggressive means.
  • Exposure to sunlight . Ultraviolet radiation can cause changes in wart growths and, as a result, inflammatory processes inside them.
  • Transformation into oncology . This is a fairly rare occurrence, but you should always be aware of this danger. If the wart turns red, or it is swollen, painful, changed shape, bleeding, or has black spots on it, you should urgently contact a specialized institution for examination. The condition is especially dangerous when there are no visible reasons for inflammation.

  Formations on the skin that look like warts, what are they?

What to do with an inflamed wart

If an inflammatory process is detected in a growth, under no circumstances should you remove it yourself, or try to cauterize or cure it. The only thing that can be done is to disinfect it and try to relieve inflammation with special ointments. It is important to pay attention to the accompanying symptoms:

  • Soreness;
  • Increase in size;
  • Bleeding;
  • Changes in pigmentation (black coloring should be especially alarming);
  • Itching, burning;
  • Uneven contour.

If at least one of these signs is present, it is necessary to contact a dermatologist as soon as possible, as this indicates a serious pathological process.

If the damage to the wart is minor, and it occurred due to rubbing, the cause must be eliminated. If there is no improvement within a few days, you should also consult your doctor.

 Blood from a wart or its particles should not get on healthy areas of the skin - this can lead to self-infection or transmission of the virus to other family members.

Treatment options

In most cases, there is only one treatment - removal of the growth. However, when the formation is inflamed, doing it yourself is strictly not recommended. It happens that the formations heal themselves - they turn black and fall off. You shouldn’t wait for this if the warts are swollen and reddened.

Therapy for warts (no matter whether they are inflamed or not) should always be comprehensive. To reduce the activity of the virus, antiviral agents and immunomodulators are prescribed. It is advisable to remove even non-dangerous growths, since HPV cells are concentrated in them. You can get rid of warts with medication or radically in a hospital setting.

Drug treatment

Remedies for warts are available in the form of ointments, creams, sprays and patches. The most effective preparations are based on salicylic acid and celandine. Using medications for 1 to 2 weeks leads to complete burning of the growth. It is important not to damage healthy tissue around it. However, if the wart is inflamed, such methods can be dangerous.

  The cause of warts is the human papillomavirus

The doctor can determine the possibility of using local agents during a visual examination. Most often, in such cases, a decision is made on the surgical method. This option is the most justified, as it significantly reduces the likelihood of inflammation spreading and worsening the situation.

Radical removal

Currently, any growths on the skin can be removed in several ways:

  • Laser . A painless procedure during which there is no direct contact with the skin. After it there are no scars or scars left. With the correct actions of the doctor, the growth is completely removed, and recovery lasts 1 – 2 days.

  • Radio waves . The method is similar to laser, only in this case exposure to radio waves is used.
  • Cryodestruction . This is the cauterization of a wart with liquid nitrogen. The technology allows you to get rid of the growth in one or several sessions, depending on the size of the formation. The method is not new, and has proven itself over many years of experience.
  • Electrocoagulation . The build-up is removed under high temperatures using an electrode. This method does not burn the wart, but kills its cells. After the procedure, the formation dries, turns black and falls off on its own.
  • Surgical method . It has many negative aspects - although it is a small operation, it is still an operation. There is a small risk of skin infection during the procedure, and healing occurs within 1 to 2 weeks. A cosmetic suture is applied to the wound.

Which method will be used depends largely on financial capabilities. The more painless the procedure, the higher its cost.

 Recovery period

After removing a wart by any method, you must follow your doctor's instructions. Typically, recommendations in the postoperative period are as follows:

  • Apply hydrocortisone ointment to the removal site - do not use other means not prescribed by your doctor;
  • Do not expose the wound to sunlight;
  • Do not pick off the crust that has formed at the site of the wart - inflammation may begin or a scar will remain;
  • It is advisable to cover the cleaned area with a plaster so as not to accidentally damage it;
  • Avoid prolonged contact with water - the wound needs to dry out;

  Why are warts dangerous and what happens if they are not removed?

You should not use cosmetics at the removal site until the redness goes away and the skin returns to its normal color.

What to do if the wart falls off on its own

It happens that when the activity of the papilloma virus decreases, the growths die and fall off. If this process is accompanied by redness around the formation, its swelling and pain, the death may have been provoked by some external factor.

If the formation falls off on its own or due to damage, you must:

  1. Apply hydrogen peroxide or other antiseptic to the resulting wound;
  2. Cover this area with a plaster or bandage;
  3. Save the fallen off part of the wart for histological analysis;
  4. Contact a dermatologist for advice.

Prevention

If you follow a few simple rules, the likelihood of complications with HPV is minimized:

  • Warts located in areas of constant friction must be removed as early as possible;
  • Under no circumstances should you remove growths yourself without first consulting a doctor;
  • Avoid damaging warts and exposing them to chemicals;
  • Try to avoid stress;
  • Maintain immunity, lead a healthy lifestyle;
  • Maintain personal hygiene;
  • Avoid frequent contact with the contaminated surface of any warts – both your own and others’;
  • Use a separate towel and do not wear someone else’s shoes or clothes.

If it is not possible to remove warts clinically, it is necessary to constantly monitor them and monitor changes in their color and shape. Simultaneous infection with several strains of the papilloma virus occurs. Therefore, if a blood test reveals a non-dangerous type, this does not mean that the growth cannot develop into cancer - perhaps it is caused by another type.

The wart is inflamed and hurts: what to do if blood appears, causes, treatment, what is dangerous

A wart is a growth on the skin, usually small in size, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It can be found on any part of the body - face, arms, legs, groin area and even on the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and genitals.

For the most part, warts, or papillomas as they are also called, do not pose any threat to human health and can disappear on their own without any treatment. Sometimes the growths reach large sizes and thereby cause psychological discomfort to the patient, especially if they appear on open areas of the body.

In medicine, there are several hundred types of warts. Each of them differs in appearance and location. The most common include the following:

  1. Ordinary, aka vulgar.
  2. Plantar.
  3. Flat.
  4. Thread-like.
  5. Periungual.
  6. Pointed.
  7. Senile.

Causes of inflammation

In most cases, the cause of the inflammatory process of warts is mechanical damage. But there are cases when the disease is influenced by other factors:

  1. Rubbing the wart on clothing or shoes.
  2. Getting injured while combing or shaving.
  3. Prolonged stressful situation or nervous tension.
  4. Hormonal imbalance in the body caused by medications or a malfunction in the body.
  5. The effects of chemicals on the wart.
  6. Excess of ultraviolet rays.
  7. Exacerbation of chronic diseases.
  8. Reduced immunity.

For whatever reasons, inflammation occurs, it is important to remember that papilloma can degenerate into a malignant tumor at any time.

That is why all neoplasms should be observed by a doctor.

Symptoms

Signs of wart inflammation are easily identified: the growth turns red, increases in size, pain, itching, discomfort when touched appears, body temperature rises, in rare cases suppuration occurs, and blood is released.

The phenomenon cannot go away on its own, so it requires prompt medical treatment.

Diagnosis of inflammation

It is not difficult to recognize inflammation, but determining the nature and cause of the disease is possible only after examination and a complete examination. For this purpose, experts prescribe a dermatoscope, which helps to examine the wart in great detail and identify all the features of its appearance.

At the same time, cytological analysis is popular in the field of diagnostics, allowing one to study the cellular structure of papilloma and determine the presence of benign and malignant formations.

After receiving all the results of the study, doctors can make an accurate diagnosis and select the most effective treatment, depending on the individual characteristics of the human body.

Treatment methods

If the inflamed papilloma darkens, forms a dense covering on the surface, bleeds and hurts, it must be urgently removed.

Today, the most well-known ways to get rid of warts are the following:

  1. Laser surgery.
  2. Radio wave surgery.
  3. Electrocoagulation.

Along with this, medicinal antiviral drugs and immunomodulatory treatment are used. These measures allow you to avoid the recurrence of growths and negative consequences.

Self-medication of an inflamed wart is strictly prohibited, as there is a high probability of papillomatosis. Externally, this phenomenon consists of many neoplasms spreading to healthy areas of the skin.

In medical practice, among the many types of human papillomavirus, formations with high oncogenic activity are found. When they are introduced into the human body, the development of cancer cells can begin. In addition, trauma to the papilloma can lead to its malignancy. The following symptoms indicate this:

  1. enlargement .
  2. Violation of the integrity of the top layer.
  3. The appearance of small spots on the wart.
  4. Serous or bloody discharge.

It is important to note that malignancy of the inflamed growth is rare. The appearance of cancer cells is usually provoked by excessive activity of viruses, chronic inflammatory diseases, and decreased immunity.

After a visual examination by the doctor and all the necessary tests, a dermatologist determines the method of removing the wart. The main thing is the speed of decision making. Waiting tactics lead to irreparable consequences.

Basic removal methods

Traditionally, removal of the inflamed growth is carried out by surgery using local anesthesia. The disadvantage of this intervention is that a visible scar remains on the skin. Currently, improved methods of getting rid of papillomas have appeared, so classic surgery is rarely performed.

Electrocoagulation is a hardware electrosurgical method for solving the problem. Under the influence of current, the cellular fluid evaporates and the protein is destroyed, which in the future leads to the disappearance of the wart.

Electrosurgery is used to remove growths of any size. The power of the device and the exposure time increase in proportion to the depth of the papilloma.

Cryodestruction with liquid nitrogen. A procedure that allows you to eliminate warts of various locations using low temperature.

Keratolytic agents are another safe and effective way to get rid of growth using salicylic and lactic acids. Removal by this method takes a long time and therefore requires a lot of patience from the patient.

Among the newest methods for removing warts is radio wave surgery. The procedure is widely used to treat tumors of various locations. Under the influence of the device, thermal energy is generated that excises the tissue. The advantages of radio wave surgery include the following:

  1. No possibility of injury.
  2. Painless.
  3. No scars on the skin.

Laser destruction is one of the most successful ways to remove warts. The positive qualities of the event include the accuracy of the operation, the absence of mechanical impact and serious complications.

Drug treatment

In addition to surgical methods of solving the problem, there are medicinal methods.

For this purpose most often used:

  1. Products with a freezing effect, such as Cryopharma or Wartner.
  2. Necrotizing drugs, the targeted effect of which is tissue death. These include Verrukacid and Ferezol.
  3. Keratolytics - help soften keratinized tissue. The drugs usually contain salicylic acid.
  4. Antiviral ointments.

Why is inflammation of a wart dangerous?

The first and most important thing that patients should remember is that a wart can degenerate into a malignant tumor with all the ensuing negative consequences.

That is why you need to be careful and attentive to your health and regularly check your skin. It is important to identify the disease in time and begin the correct treatment, which only a specialist can advise.

If treatment is delayed for a long time, there is a possibility of new formations appearing in healthy areas of the body.

An inflamed wart not only brings discomfort and pain, but also poses a serious threat to health. Any injury, improper treatment and inaction lead to the spread of infection throughout the body.

Complications may also appear after the growth is removed. The main ones include: scars and burns on the skin from the procedure, pigmentation, reappearance of growth. Most often, these negative consequences arise due to the patient’s negligent attitude to the doctor’s recommendations or the incorrect action of a specialist during wart removal.

To avoid inflammation and subsequent complications, it is recommended to adhere to simple preventive rules, namely:

  1. Maintain personal hygiene.
  2. Have a decent sex life.
  3. Don't use other people's things.
  4. Avoid stressful situations and emotional stress.
  5. Strengthen immunity.
  6. Lead a healthy lifestyle .

A wart is a skin pathology that is easy to get rid of in a medical facility or at home. But if it is inflamed and brings pain and discomfort, you should not self-medicate. It is necessary to consult a doctor for qualified help as soon as possible to avoid negative consequences.

What to do if a wart becomes inflamed?

Content

  • Causes of inflammation

A wart is a very unpleasant phenomenon that causes discomfort and aesthetic problems to a person.

But if at the same time such a growth begins to become inflamed, increase in size and swell, then real torment begins.

Moreover, the transformation of a wart can be dangerous, especially if it is noticed at a later date. It is important to monitor changes in such growths and, if necessary, see a doctor in a timely manner.

Causes of inflammation

If a wart suddenly becomes inflamed, you must first find out the cause that became the provoking factor. These reasons include:

  1. constant friction against clothes and shoes;
  2. mechanical damage;
  3. chemical burn;
  4. home removal using traditional methods;
  5. excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation;
  6. development of the oncological process.

If the growth is located in the armpit, on the neck, in the groin area, or in another place where the skin surface is subject to constant friction, then it also experiences regular irritation.

It is believed that such warts that appear in inconvenient places are best removed before they become injured.

If you don’t want to resort to this method, then you need to choose loose-fitting clothes, and it’s better to avoid tight clothes.

Sometimes such a formation can be accidentally damaged, after which it begins to swell. Especially if it is located on the skin of the legs, arms, and also on the surface of the head. The risk of damaging the wart is very high during normal scratching. A growth on the hands is often injured when working with kitchen or other tools.

In some cases, treating the growth at home can cause inflammation.

Most often, this happens when a person uses natural ingredients of an aggressive nature or ties an existing formation with thread.

You can encounter the same problem when the area of growth is overexposed to ultraviolet rays. In this case, internal inflammatory processes affecting the epidermis are also launched.

Sometimes, inflammation of a wart may indicate that an oncological formation has begun to develop in the body. Especially if the growth became red, significantly changed its shape, and began to bleed. If a wart is inflamed and hurts, this may also indicate that it is turning into a malignant growth.

Treatment methods

If a person notices an inflamed wart, it is necessary to pay attention to the presence of accompanying symptoms. When pain in this area is felt, the growth gradually increases in size, and it may begin to bleed and change color, then appropriate measures should be taken immediately. It is imperative to see a doctor such as a dermatologist.

Most often, in such cases, removal of the growth is prescribed. But under no circumstances should you do this yourself. Sometimes inflamed warts themselves can turn black, dry out and fall off. But this happens extremely rarely.

Most experts recommend undergoing complex therapy. It consists of taking immunostimulating drugs and antiviral drugs.

Additionally, creams and ointments based on salicylic acid and a natural component such as celandine are prescribed.

Drug therapy lasts about two weeks. During this time period, the existing formation is completely burned out. During home treatment, the area where the wart is inflamed and itchy should be treated in a targeted manner so as not to damage healthy tissue. If drug therapy does not give the desired result, then radical medicine can be used. This:

  • exposure to laser radiation;
  • radio waves;
  • cryodestruction;
  • electrocoagulation;
  • surgical removal of the growth.

When exposed to laser, the patient does not experience any painful sensations. In this case, no scars remain on the skin surface. And the recovery period will take only two days. During cryodestruction, the formation is burned out with liquid nitrogen. But with electrocoagulation, the wart is exposed to high temperatures, after which it dries and gradually falls off.

If surgery is prescribed, then the recovery period may take about two weeks. And in order not to encounter possible consequences, you will have to strictly follow all the doctor’s recommendations.

A wart is inflamed: what to do at home?

A wart is a benign growth on the skin that has the shape of a tubercle, a ball on a thin stalk, or multiple formations resembling a cauliflower. A skin growth rarely causes concern, but under some circumstances it can change its structure, size, color and shape, and then the question arises of what to do if a wart suddenly becomes inflamed.

What does an inflamed wart look like?

Warts appear as a result of penetration of the human papillomavirus (HPV) into the body through contact, household or sexual contact. The cause of skin disease and the occurrence of warts is a decrease in the protective properties of the body and the activation of the virus against this background.

If the neoplasm begins to change its color and shape, increases in size, becomes painful, itches, itches, bleeds or festers, this indicates that an inflammatory process has begun. This situation can be caused by a number of reasons and requires consultation with a dermatologist.

Common causes of inflammation of skin tags

The most common external causes that provoke inflammation of the wart:

  • constant injury to the growth by clothing, underwear or shoes;
  • accidental injury to the wart with sharp nails or objects (when combing, shaving, hair removal, etc.);
  • excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays;
  • Aggressive effects of household chemicals.

Also, the causes of inflammation can be various internal problems in the body, provoked by heredity, hormonal imbalances, frequent stress and nervous tension.

As a result of improper manipulations associated with trying to remove a wart at home, the growths can also become inflamed. In this case, nearby skin is also affected.

The most dangerous situation is the possible degeneration of a benign neoplasm into a malignant one, in which the papilloma looks thickened and expanded, pain occurs when you press it, and the color changes from pink-brown to black.

Inflammation of a wart as a result of injury

Damage to the skin with a growth most often occurs due to mechanical impact on the wart during shaving or rubbing against clothing. You can accidentally touch the papilloma with a nail or jewelry, or accidentally pick it off when combing your hair. Often, growths on the soles are damaged by prolonged walking or contact with uncomfortable shoes.

The inflamed growth hurts, itches, can bleed and come off completely. In this situation, you must immediately treat the wound with hydrogen peroxide and consult a doctor.

The use of detergents and household cleaning products can also provoke an inflammatory process, characterized by itching and redness of the wart and surrounding tissues.

Internal reasons

If a wart on the body becomes inflamed without obvious reasons, this may be due to internal factors, including:

  • infectious and inflammatory processes occurring in the body;
  • severe decrease in immune defense;
  • disorders of the thyroid gland and hormonal imbalances;
  • disorders of the gastrointestinal system, liver and kidneys;
  • manifestations of allergies;
  • pregnancy period;
  • alcohol or drug addiction;
  • poisoning of the body with pesticides.

In rare cases, warts can develop into malignant tumors. Such formations can hurt, bleed, increase in size and turn black.

Why is blood released?

Blood from a wart can appear as a result of injury to the area of the body where it is located. In case of such damage, it is necessary to quickly treat the wound with an antiseptic or a suitable hemostatic agent, and then cover it with a bactericidal plaster.

If the wart bleeds for no apparent reason, you should not delay your visit to the doctor, as this may be a sign of incipient inflammation and degeneration of the papilloma into a malignant neoplasm.

Is it dangerous and should I see a doctor?

If a wart becomes inflamed as a result of mechanical friction, damage or exposure to aggressive chemicals on the skin, but after treatment with antiseptics and painkillers the wound has healed, you should carefully monitor the further condition of the growth and, if necessary, visit a doctor.

The growth should be removed at home after consultation with a dermatologist, and the best way would be to remove the growths in specialized clinics or beauty salons.

When new symptoms of inflammation appear (itching, burning, bloody or purulent discharge from a wart), the question arises which doctor should be consulted. In this situation, a dermatologist will provide professional advice, who, after conducting diagnostic studies, can refer you to an oncologist, gynecologist or other specialist, depending on the location of the tumor.

A wart is inflamed - what to do?

What to do if the wart becomes inflamed:

  1. Inflammation can be reduced using folk remedies or traditional medications.
  2. In case of multiple growth of papillomas and extensive inflammatory process, aggravated by pain, bleeding or purulent discharge, you should consult a doctor for advice on removing tumors using surgery or hardware methods.
  3. Antiviral drugs are required to treat inflammation, the action of which helps strengthen the immune system and prevents the multiplication of the virus.

Pregnant women should pay increased attention to the treatment of inflammation of skin growths, since during this period their immune system is weakened. Incorrect or insufficient measures to eliminate the inflammatory process on the skin can lead to negative consequences for the unborn child.

Folk remedies for relieving inflammation

It is possible to treat condylomas at home using traditional medicine that helps relieve inflammation. The following home remedies are recommended to treat inflamed growths:

  1. Garlic cream. Mix a suitable cream with crushed garlic in a 2:1 ratio, apply a gauze pad with the applied product to the damaged area of skin and secure with a bandage for 3 hours. After removing the bandage, rinse the growth with warm water.
  2. Tea tree oil, which is a good antiseptic and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Apply a cotton swab to the wart 3-4 times a day.
  3. Celandine juice, which should be carefully applied to the wart several times a day, without touching the surrounding skin.
  4. Compresses from decoctions of chamomile, calendula, plantain, burdock root. All herbs have an anti-inflammatory, calming effect.

Treatment with traditional methods includes the internal use of infusions and decoctions of medicinal herbs that help strengthen the immune system and relieve inflammation (rose hips, echinacea, eleutherococcus, etc.).

Treatment with medications

For pain and inflammation, various local remedies are used that have anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effects. The most effective ointments are Betadine, Ichthyol, Vishnevsky. They must be applied to the damaged surface of the papilloma several times a day, covering the area with a bandage.

It is also recommended to use antiviral drugs that affect the cause of inflammation (Oxolinic ointment, Viferon, Acyclovir, Panavir).

There are also medicinal methods of getting rid of warts using drugs with salicylic acid, Celandine balm, etc. They should be used only after consultation with a doctor and in the absence of contraindications.

Radical removal

  • The most radical methods of removing papillomas are hardware techniques or surgical excision of the tumor.
  • Surgery is indicated for large size and oncogenic risk of the tumor.

Effective procedures for removing warts are: laser removal, electrocoagulation and thermocoagulation (exposure to high frequency currents or high temperature), cryodestruction (freezing with liquid nitrogen) and radiosurgical excision.

If the papilloma becomes inflamed during pregnancy

The formation of papillomas during pregnancy is often associated with hormonal changes in the female body and a decrease in immunity during this period. If an inflammatory process occurs on the skin, a pregnant woman should consult a doctor who can recommend the most suitable medications and methods for removing tumors without harming the unborn child.

Removal of papilloma should be carried out only according to indications, since excessive intervention in a woman’s body during this period is inappropriate. The most suitable methods for eliminating warts in pregnant women are: surgical excision, laser removal or radiocautery. The procedure is best performed in the 1st trimester and when the size of the wart is still small.

Prevention

To prevent the appearance of tumors and inflammatory processes on the skin, you should adhere to the following rules:

  • maintaining hygiene (wash your hands after returning from the street, do not use personal belongings and clothes of other people);
  • refusal of unprotected casual sexual contacts;
  • in public places (swimming pool, sauna, beach) protect your feet with special shoes;
  • strengthen the immune system (eat right, avoid stress, exercise, spend more time in the fresh air, use vitamin complexes);
  • If there are warts on the body, periodically carefully examine them to identify changes, and avoid tight, chafing clothes and shoes.

Can a wart hurt and what to do if it becomes inflamed?

Warts are benign skin growths that usually do not pose a health risk. But they are easily confused with other neoplasms that can degenerate into malignant tumors.

Therefore, if a wart hurts and there is a change in its size, color, shape, you need to consult a dermatologist .

Removing such warts in beauty salons is unacceptable, since the removed tissue must be sent for histological examination.

Why is the wart inflamed and painful?

Inflammation of a wart is usually preceded by trauma and infection .

Injuries

You can injure a growth on the skin by hitting it with a fingernail, a comb, a razor, or hitting it on a hard surface. Injury can be caused by wearing clothes made of coarse fabrics or hard wool, which rub and irritate the skin formation, causing microtrauma on its surface.

Household chemicals containing alkali or acid can also damage the top layer of the tumor.

Infection

Microorganisms penetrate through the damage, and immune blood cells fight with them, which gives the picture of inflammation. Redness, itching, and pain characteristic of inflammatory processes appear .

Reactions occurring at the site of inflammation affect skin pain receptors (nociceptors), causing an increase in their sensitivity (sensitization) and a decrease in the pain threshold.

The result is pain (hyperalgesia) - pain receptors begin to react to stimuli that previously did not cause their reaction, so the wart hurts when pressed.

What warts can hurt?

It is necessary to distinguish between warts that hurt due to inflammation and pathological processes occurring in them, and those for which pain when pressing is a normal condition .

The second category includes plantar warts - the only of all types of these skin formations that are characterized by pain from the very beginning of their appearance .

Plantar warts are dense gray plaques with a keratinized surface. Their appearance is promoted by excessive sweating of the feet and excess weight, which causes excessive pressure on the foot. Due to the acute pain that occurs when pressing on the plantar plaques, walking becomes difficult, which sometimes leads to temporary disability.

All other types of warts initially do not cause pain:

  • Ordinary - tubercles with a rough surface, most often appearing on the hands.
  • Flat (juvenile) - nodules with a smooth surface, usually appearing in childhood and adolescence.
  • Genital condylomas are small papillary growths that appear on the genitals, between the buttocks.
  • Senile plaques are dark plaques with a loose surface, characteristic of the elderly.

Important! The appearance of pain indicates pathological changes, and this is a good reason to visit a dermatologist.

Symptoms of wart inflammation

Warts can appear on the skin and mucous membranes of any part of the body. Therefore, they are not always visible, which is why injury to the skin growth and the onset of the inflammatory process may go unnoticed.

Typically, a growth attracts attention when it already hurts or itches .

In this case, you should immediately consult a doctor. The presence of other symptoms also requires immediate consultation with a dermatologist:

  • The appearance of itching, burning.
  • Soreness, pain when pressing,
  • Redness and swelling around the wart.
  • Bleeding.
  • Change in color, appearance of dark spots, rims, blackening.
  • Increase in size.
  • For neoplasms with hair – hair loss.
  • Discharge of pus.

Possible consequences and complications

If a wart becomes inflamed, without immediate treatment, health-threatening complications .

Since warts are the result of infection with the human papillomavirus , when scratching an itchy inflammation, infection of nearby skin areas and any other areas of the body with damaged skin can occur. As a result, new formations may appear . The risk of infecting other people with the virus also increases.

With a weakened immune system, the inflammatory process can lead to the formation of edema and abscess - an accumulation of pus in the tissues, requiring surgical intervention.

In especially severe cases, a deadly disease can develop - sepsis .

Important! The most dangerous consequence of not seeing a doctor in a timely manner about an inflamed wart is cancer - melanoma. At certain stages, this disease is incurable and death is inevitable.

What to do if a wart hurts

  • If a wart causes pain, you should not self-medicate or try to remove it using folk methods or pharmaceuticals.
  • This problem should not be addressed to a beauty salon either.
  • The only correct action in this case is to consult a dermatologist .

The likelihood that the changed tumor will turn out to be melanoma is low. But this disease is so dangerous that even the slightest suspicious symptoms should serve as grounds for reinsurance.

Therefore, at the first signs of wart inflammation, you should contact a dermatologist rather than a beauty salon.

The doctor will examine the tumor, select the appropriate method for its removal, and send the removed material for histological examination .

This analysis will make sure that malignant processes have not begun in the tissues.

And if the result shows their presence, which happens in rare cases, then the sooner treatment is started, the higher the chances of recovery from this most dangerous disease.

Indications for removal of growths

If warts do not hurt , do not become inflamed, do not cause complexes about their appearance, and are not irritated by clothing and household chemicals, then it is not necessary to treat or remove them .
