Phlegm in the throat without cough: causes and treatment methods

Cough is familiar to every person. It often appears when the respiratory tract is irritated or due to illness. In this way, bronchial and nasal mucus leaves the body.

Some people have to deal with this condition when there is phlegm in the throat without a cough. This condition is quite unpleasant and has its reasons.

The method of treatment will depend on what triggered the symptom.

The reasons for the accumulation of sputum in the throat without a cough may be physiological processes or diseases. Symptoms in patients are always similar. They complain of a feeling of a lump in the throat that they want to cough up, but there is no cough.

Therefore, it is quite difficult to push out the accumulated mucus. A person suffers from soreness, itching, and discomfort inside the throat.

The presence of mucus can cause a change in voice. One way or another, sputum is just a symptom, a complaint, and not an independent disease. To get rid of anxiety, you need to see a doctor.

Additional (concomitant) signs of sputum may be: fever, profuse runny nose, increased or poor salivation.

Causes caused by pathological processes

Green sputum without cough is always the cause of an infectious disease. It can form or accumulate in the throat with the following pathologies:

  • pharyngitis (inflammation of the larynx);
  • rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal mucosa);
  • nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasopharynx);
  • bronchial or pulmonary diseases (usually chronic);
  • tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils);
  • allergy.

Most often, the feeling of phlegm in the throat occurs in people who suffer from laryngopharyngeal reflux or esophagitis.

Mucus drains from the nose down the back of the throat. Or it is thrown from the lower respiratory tract, esophagus. Irritation that occurs inside the pharynx increases the formation of sputum.

Viral and bacterial diseases that cause excess mucus in the throat are often accompanied by elevated body temperature. When fluid comes back from the esophagus, there is an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

Increased salivation

The reason that phlegm accumulates in the throat without coughing may be excessive or insufficient salivation. This reaction is physiological and, up to a certain point, does not pose any threat to humans.

Insufficient saliva production can occur due to dry indoor air or eating hot or spicy foods. This also affects smokers and people who abuse alcohol. Decreased salivation is sometimes a consequence of taking certain medications.

Excessive salivation can also cause phlegm to accumulate in the throat. At the same time, a person will call it mucus, since it is dense and cannot be coughed up.

The reasons for increased salivation may be the following factors:

  • taking special medications that have hypersalivation as side effects;
  • disruption of the body's metabolic processes;
  • deviations in the functioning of the nervous system, psychosomatic disorders;
  • poisoning, intoxication of the body, some types of infections;
  • disease of the ENT departments.

Hypersalivation is often diagnosed in people who smoke, since tobacco smoke irritates the oral mucosa.

Diagnostics

If the patient suffers from phlegm in the throat without coughing, the reasons are determined by the doctor. Based on the results of the examination, a diagnosis is made, which is corrected with the help of certain medications, traditional methods and lifestyle changes.

Diagnostic measures include:

  1. examination (larynx, tonsils, oral cavity, nose);
  2. listening to breathing with a fanendoscope (determining wheezing or determining its absence);
  3. bacteriological culture of sputum;
  4. studying anamnesis, determining chronic diseases;
  5. blood test and instrumental studies (if necessary).

Treatment for diseases

It involves the use of oral medications (anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral) and local antiseptics (tablets, sprays, drops, ointments).

To build an approximate treatment regimen, you need to consider each cause of sputum formation individually.

Runny nose (rhinitis, nasopharyngitis, sinusitis, sinusitis)

The safest method would be to rinse the nose and sinuses with Aqualor, Dolphin, Rinostop and others based on sea water.

When the tissues are congested and swollen, nasal mucus cannot flow out naturally, so it goes down the throat.

To eliminate swelling, use Nazivin, Snoop, Otrivin and other vasoconstrictor drops. Remember that such medications should not be used for more than 3-5 days. Depending on the cause of the runny nose, appropriate medications should be used:

  • for bacterial infection Isofr, Polydex, Dioxidin, Protargol;
  • with viral origin Grippferon, Genferon, IRS-19;
  • for inflammation in the nose Pinosol, Vicks, Pinovit.

Diseases of the larynx and oral cavity (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, stomatitis)

Sputum without cough, the causes of which are caused by inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, is easily eliminated with the help of anti-inflammatory and antiseptic agents. To treat the mouth and throat you can use:

  • lozenges Doctor Mom, Strepsils, Grammidin;
  • sprays Miramistin, Tantum Verde, Ingalipt, Hexoral;
  • rinsing solutions Stomatofit, Chlorophyllipt.

Pathologies of the respiratory system

A cough provoked by medications will relieve the condition and cough up phlegm.

Preference should be given to herbal remedies based on marshmallow, thermopsis, and plantain. Synthetic products include Coldrex, Stoptussin, ACC, Bronchicum and others.

If bacteria are found in the sputum (during bacteriological culture), then antibiotics are prescribed: penicillins, macrolides, tetracyclines or cephalosporins. Such drugs should be used only as prescribed by a doctor and according to an individual regimen.

Other reasons

If sputum accumulates in the throat due to allergies, then you should take antihistamines (Suprastin, Cetirizine, Loratadine, Tavegil). Relief should occur within the first day of using them. If the symptom is caused by reflux and reflux of stomach contents, then treatment is prescribed by a gastroenterologist.

It will be individual for each patient (with the use of enzymes, anti-inflammatory drugs and dopamine receptor blockers).

Treatment of insufficient and increased salivation

A lump of mucus inside the throat caused by insufficient saliva production can be eliminated with the help of additional moisturizers.

The patient is advised to drink more fluids. It is desirable that it be clean water. You can use special electrolyte solutions.

It is also necessary to exclude provocateurs that contribute to drying of the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and larynx. Mucus in the throat that has accumulated due to hypersalivation (increased salivation) must be eliminated by certain means that correspond to its cause.

Your doctor may prescribe the following treatments:

  • anticholinergics that suppress the secretion of salivary fluid (Riabal, Platyfillin or others) should be taken very carefully and only as prescribed, since these medications have many adverse reactions;
  • botulinum toxin injections (block the functioning of the salivary gland for a while) - during this period you cannot take antibiotics or any blood thinning medications;
  • cryotherapy (an effect on the human body that provokes reflex swallowing) - saliva is released in the same volume, but the patient manages to swallow it in time;
  • surgery (surgical removal of the gland) – is performed when other methods are ineffective or are not suitable for a particular patient.

Let's summarize

Self-treatment of phlegm in the throat without a cough can last a very long time. If the cause of this symptom is incorrectly identified, then no effect should be expected from the therapy used.

With useless medications, you may not only fail to improve your well-being, but also make it worse. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor in time and find out why you constantly have a feeling of mucus in your throat.

You can take the following measures yourself:

  • drink more water, teas, warm milk with honey;
  • gargle with anti-inflammatory herbal decoctions (if you are not allergic to them);
  • rinse the nasal passages and monitor oral hygiene.

If a child complains of accumulation of phlegm in the throat, then there can be no talk of any self-medication. The feeling of mucus accumulation in the larynx is not always exactly phlegm. This is how dangerous diseases, such as cancer, can manifest themselves.

Phlegm in the throat without cough: causes and treatment

When the respiratory system is functioning normally, a small amount of sputum is completely normal. However, if it begins to cause discomfort, then there is likely a problem that needs to be identified. When phlegm appears in the throat without a cough, you should consult a doctor.

Sputum, what is it? In medicine, this definition refers to viscous, thick mucus, which is secreted by respiratory epithelial cells and contains bacteria. It is formed, most often, in the lower parts of the respiratory organs - in the trachea, lungs, bronchi.

This pathology can act as a symptom of an inflammatory process in the body, or as a consequence of a recent illness, but if there is phlegm in the throat without a cough, then this is probably some kind of complication.

If this problem is detected, do not delay treatment. After all, this can serve as a signal for the development of chronic diseases.

What are the causes of phlegm in the throat without coughing?

  1. Sinusitis or sinusitis. A fairly common cause of phlegm, as inflammation leads to excessive mucus accumulation. In this case, the discharge may be white or greenish in color. And in acute cases of infection, brown sputum may appear.
  2. The presence of viral or colds.

    Headaches, fever, redness of the throat, sputum - all this speaks of ARVI.

  3. Poor nutrition. Abuse of fatty, spicy, salty foods, as well as frequent consumption of hot dishes, can cause esophageal disorders, resulting in mucous discharge.

  4. Chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (gastritis, inflammation of the pancreas) can provoke the separation of clots.
  5. Inflammatory processes of teeth, insufficient hygiene.
  6. Abuse of tobacco products and alcohol.

    Bad habits are another unfortunate reason for such an unpleasant phenomenon when phlegm appears without a cough.

  7. Hypothermia.
  8. Microclimatic disturbances in premises. The use of air conditioners and other coolers or heaters makes the air very dry.

    And for adequate functioning of human mucous membranes, slightly moist, fresh air currents are needed. Such conditions can lead to the formation of excessive viscous secretions and soreness in the nasopharynx. The solution may be an evaporator installed in the apartment.

Also, the cause of sputum discharge can be inflammation of the lower and upper respiratory tract. The composition of sputum will help determine the nature of the disease.

  • Asthmatic diseases are a reaction of the bronchi to all kinds of allergic pathogens. Symptoms are represented by the following manifestations: shortness of breath, lack of free breathing (attacks of suffocation), chest discomfort, a feeling of tightness, wheezing in the respiratory tract, constant phlegm. The characteristic discharge is translucent in color, thick in structure.
  • Pneumonia and pleurisy. Pneumonia is characterized by high body temperature, chest pain, and general intoxication. This releases rusty-brown mucus.
  • Various tumor processes and purulent inflammations can be determined if the secretion secreted is purulent with blood streaks.

Causes of sputum formation in children

A child's body is more susceptible to the influence of germs and microorganisms. Sometimes the protective functions of the child’s immune system cannot cope with them, and then troubles arise.

The main causes of mucous discharge in a child are:

  • diseases caused by fungal and viral infections;
  • improper development of internal organs, in particular the nasopharynx and larynx;
  • inflammation of the bronchi;
  • inflammation of the adenoids - very common among children;
  • external influence factors.

The health of the child must be monitored with special responsibility and care. Since all processes in a child’s body proceed twice as fast as in an adult. If the above facts are discovered, prevention or treatment must be started immediately. It is best to seek advice from specialists.

Phlegm in the throat in the morning

In the morning, this symptom can appear for two main reasons:

  1. Most often this is associated with a disease such as reflux esophagitis - damage to the gastrointestinal tract by bacteria. Manifests itself in the form of discharge of stomach contents into the nasopharynx. A very common symptom is heartburn. The fact is that hydrochloric acid provokes the formation of an increased amount of mucus.
  2. Allergic reactions. This symptom may be an indicator of a reaction to allergens. Irritants can be animals, pollen, fluff, dust. As well as food products (peanuts, honey, fruits, sweets), chemical components that are present in detergents and washing powders.

For an expedient and correct choice of treatment, diagnosis is necessary. All studies are carried out by a doctor. After contacting a doctor, an examination and determination of symptoms are carried out. Next, tests are prescribed and examinations are applied, such as: bronchoscopy, sputum culture, X-ray of the lungs, gastroenterological manipulations. You should not be afraid of this, since health comes first.

Drug treatment

Treatment is prescribed by a doctor depending on the identified provoking factor.

As a rule, a diet is recommended, an effective set of medications is selected that corresponds to the identified problem, and, if necessary, a course of antibiotics is prescribed. But they are permissible in extreme cases, because they put a lot of stress on the liver.

If for some reason it is not possible to go to the hospital, then methods can come to the rescue that will not remove the root cause itself, but will help eliminate the symptoms.

  • You can use vasoconstrictors. They will help relieve swelling of the sinuses for a while;
  • moisturizing the nasopharynx. You can use drops that will flow down the surface of the pharynx, this will help enhance the expectoration of mucus;
  • nasal rinsing;
  • inhalation. A great way to moisturize and soothe mucous membranes. Steam baths are best done with herbal decoctions or natural essential oils;
  • mineral and vitamin complexes will help strengthen the immune system and replenish the deficient content of nutrients.
  • consumption of large volumes of liquid. Two liters of water a day will help speed up metabolic processes and speed up recovery. Plus, warm teas will help relieve symptoms.

Folk remedies for treating phlegm in the throat

If the diagnosis established by the doctor is not acute, then many patients prefer folk remedies that have been proven over the years to chemical tablets.

One of the most effective procedures for getting rid of phlegm is rinsing. It’s quite simple, the main thing is to choose the most effective remedy. An excellent choice would be an antiseptic decoction of all kinds of herbs, barks and fruits.

Calendula is a powerful antiseptic of plant origin. It has a good anti-inflammatory and disinfectant effect due to the high content of antioxidants, flavonoids, and essential compounds.

Chamomile - has an antiviral and antibacterial effect due to the content of tannins, acids and vitamins.

Sage - helps with ulcers, stomach and respiratory problems. Includes: essential oils, folic acid, vitamins B, A, C, PP.

Eucalyptus - has an anti-infective, antipyretic effect, and also strengthens immune functions.

In addition, oak bark, pine bark, St. John's wort, and rose hips have incredible benefits. However, you need to keep in mind that abuse of even natural ingredients can cause a negative reaction. Herbal medicine should be carried out wisely.

Milk and honey at night will help soften your throat and remove phlegm.

The main slogan of treatment should be: “Do no harm,” so do not self-medicate if you do not notice the effect of the manipulations performed. Take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Constant mucus in the throat - causes and treatment

The accumulation of mucus in the throat is an unpleasant sensation that causes discomfort, especially if the phlegm collects constantly. Many people do not pay attention to this phenomenon and do not rush to see a doctor, hoping that the mucus will eventually stop accumulating and interfering with normal life.

Why mucus accumulates in the throat, what disease it may indicate and how to get rid of it, read on.

Why does mucus form in the throat?

Mucus in the throat or sputum is a viscous secretion that is produced by the epithelium of the nasopharynx, as well as in the trachea and bronchi. This substance envelops the mucous membrane of the ENT organs, preventing them from drying out, injury, and performs a protective function.

Mucus in the larynx and pharynx is a natural reaction of the body to the inflammatory process occurring in it, a response to any irritant or allergen.

When viruses, microorganisms, or other irritants enter the throat or nasopharynx, the mucous secretion begins to actively increase in volume and the person has a desire to clear the airways of it and cough.

If there is a respiratory infection in the nasopharynx, this is a natural process, a protective reaction against infection and after recovery, the mucous secretion returns to normal. But, in some cases, the feeling of mucus in the throat is constantly present and may indicate a chronic disease of the ENT organs or pathology of the digestive system.

The term "postnasal drip" refers to the presence of clots of mucus and a constant unpleasant feeling of a lump in the throat. Mucus discharge flows down the back of the throat and causes discomfort. Draining mucus contains a large number of microbes, which, when they enter the digestive tract, when swallowing sputum, cause distress and are accompanied by such unpleasant symptoms as:

  • Constant feeling of mucus in the nasopharynx and throat.
  • There is a desire to free yourself from it: clear your throat or clear your throat.
  • Breathing becomes difficult, accompanied by pain, dryness, and itching in the nasopharynx.
  • Mucus in the throat, desire to cough, clear throat.
  • There is constant nasal congestion.
  • In some cases, a person suffers from a headache and feels weak.

Causes of constant mucus in the throat

Constant mucus in the throat can occur due to various factors, which are both infectious and non-infectious in nature:

  1. Acute respiratory infections (pharyngitis, rhinitis, sore throat) lead to excessive formation of mucus in the throat, thereby clearing the airways of germs and viruses, accelerating the healing process.
  2. Chronic diseases of the upper respiratory tract lead to inflammation of the larynx and sinuses. The mucous secretion is actively secreted and leads to the accumulation of a lump of mucus. Excessive accumulation of mucous matter in the nasopharynx is dangerous because it leads to the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms.
  3. Chronic pathological inflammatory processes of the lower respiratory organs (tuberculosis, pneumonia) lead to excessive sputum production. The secreted mucus makes breathing difficult, a cough with sputum appears, and pain is felt in the sternum. This pathology is accompanied by headache, drowsiness, and apathy.
  4. An allergic reaction of the body to any allergen or irritant is accompanied by the accumulation of sputum in the nasopharynx and the appearance of a lump in the throat. Allergic cough comes in attacks.
  5. Mucus constantly accumulates in the throat due to damage to the digestive organs. The cause of excessive mucus secretion may be a peptic ulcer, gastritis, or other factors that cause stomach contents to enter the esophagus.
  6. The cause of excessive mucus secretion may be an unhealthy diet, in which a person consumes a large amount of spicy, fatty, salty foods and spices that irritate the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, eating too hot food can cause mucus to appear in the throat.
  7. Smokers are more susceptible to intense secretion of saliva and bronchial secretions due to irritation of the throat mucosa by tobacco smoke.
  8. A person can experience the sensation of mucus in the throat when inhaling polluted air, dust, or being in polluted areas with poor ecology. Residents of industrial areas often complain - constantly swallowing mucus. In this way, the body gets rid of harmful substances by forming mucous secretions in the nasopharynx.

Constant mucus in the throat: symptoms

With a constant accumulation of mucus, patients, as a rule, try to get rid of it by coughing or swallowing. If there is excessive sputum production, when it becomes thick and viscous, swallowing the mucus can cause vomiting or nausea, and may also be accompanied by symptoms such as:

  • Feeling of constant burning and soreness in the throat and nasopharynx.
  • Patients feel a lump in the throat that does not go away.
  • There is a desire to cough, but there is no relief when coughing.
  • The person experiences discomfort, pain when swallowing or when eating solid food.
  • There is frequent sneezing and nasal congestion.
  • The appearance of an unpleasant sour odor from the mouth associated with the active proliferation of bacteria.
  • Possible enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes, headache, general malaise and weakness.

Treatment of mucus in the throat

If you observe the above symptoms, you need to consult an otolaryngologist and determine the cause of the accumulation of viscous mucus in the throat.

After establishing the cause, the doctor will prescribe effective drug treatment aimed at removing mucus and eliminating chronic infection or inflammatory processes in the ENT organs. In case of an allergic reaction of the body, consultation with an allergist is necessary.

In any case, treatment of the nasopharynx for mucus should be comprehensive, since the mucous substance secreted by the mucous membrane of the ENT organs is only a consequence, not a disease.

Methods for treating mucus in the throat

  1. Gargling with antiseptic solutions to eliminate inflammatory processes in it. Antibiotic drugs are prescribed as an antiseptic, such as: Miramistin, Yox, Hexoral.

    Self-administration of these medications is unacceptable, as they have a number of contraindications, especially for pregnant women and children.

  2. Sprays or absorbable lozenges against infectious diseases, such as: Kaeton, Ingalipt.

    It is worth noting that these drugs only temporarily relieve symptoms and require additional medications.

  3. Immunomodulators are special drugs to strengthen the immune system and protective functions of the body.

  4. Herbal preparations that help to separate sputum faster; after taking them, productive expectoration occurs. These drugs are especially effective for dry coughs, in which it is difficult to get rid of mucus in the throat on your own. Among them: Tonzipret, Tonzilgon, Sinupret.

  5. In addition to taking medications and following all doctor's orders, patients should stop smoking and normalize their diet by eliminating foods that irritate the mucous membranes of the throat and larynx.

How to treat mucus in the throat of an adult

Treatment of mucus in the throat occurs in stages; the doctor may prescribe the following treatment:

  • Rinsing the throat and nasopharynx with baking soda, furatsilin, a solution of potassium permanganate, infusion of chamomile or sage.
  • After the mucus has been eliminated, a course of antibiotics or other drugs is used for treatment to eliminate the cause of the disease in the ENT organs.
  • To consolidate the therapeutic effect, physiotherapeutic procedures are used, such as ultraviolet irradiation of the nasal cavity.

How to treat mucus in a child's throat

The presence of mucus in the nasopharynx and throat of a child is quite common. Since the mucous membranes of young children are very delicate and vulnerable, their treatment should be gentle.

  • One of the most effective ways to remove mucus from a child’s nasopharynx is rinsing with a light saline solution, which is completely safe for the child’s body. The saline solution has a remarkable disinfectant and antiseptic effect, gently cleansing the nasal cavity and throat from clots of mucus and snot.
  • If necessary, the doctor can prescribe the baby treatment with topical antimicrobial drugs, observing the required dosage and duration of treatment.
  • Another safe and effective method of getting rid of mucus in the throat cavity is an aqueous solution based on protein and silver ions - Protargol. The drug has an active effect on the production of mucus secretion and kills microbes and bacteria, normalizing the normal microflora and metabolic processes in the nasopharynx.

How to get rid of mucus in the throat: folk remedies

For persistent mucus in the throat, traditional methods of treatment are widely used, which significantly improve the condition. Treatment of mucus with folk remedies using medicinal herbs takes longer and can take from 2 to 4 weeks.

Gargling for mucus in the throat

Among the most effective folk methods of getting rid of phlegm are gargling, which relieves inflammation of the mucous membrane. If there is an infection in the nasopharynx, rinsing prevents its further spread.

  1. Rinse with a solution of soda and salt with the addition of iodine. To prepare the solution you will need 1 teaspoon of baking soda and salt per glass of warm water. A few drops of iodine are added to the soda-salt solution. Gargle at least three times a day.
  2. Chamomile rinses. Chamomile is a natural antiseptic, to prepare a chamomile solution for rinsing, you need to brew 1 teaspoon of chamomile with 250 ml of boiling water and let it brew and strain. Rinse every 3 hours.
  3. Calendula rinses. To prepare the solution, you need to brew 1 teaspoon of the herb with a glass of boiling water and leave to infuse for about 30 minutes, then strain. Gargle with the cooled solution every 3 hours.

Inhalation of mucus in the throat

Inhalations are a wonderful, effective way to rid the mucous membrane of excess phlegm. To carry out the procedure, you can use a special device - an inhaler, or you can use improvised means - a saucepan, over the steam of which you will need to breathe, covering your head with a towel.

To perform the procedure, the following folk remedies are used:

  1. Inhalation with mineral water. Borjomi or Essentuki mineral water, which contains sodium salts, is excellent for the procedure. Under the influence of steam, the mucus quickly separates and relieves the patient's condition. The duration of the procedure is from 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Potato inhalation. To carry out the procedure, you will need a saucepan in which the potatoes were cooked. After cooking the vegetable, you need to mash it and add soda to the mashed potatoes. Inhale deeply the fumes from the potatoes while leaning over the pan and covering yourself with a towel. The duration of the procedure is up to 15 minutes.
  3. Inhalations with a decoction of chamomile and calendula. To carry out the procedure, prepare a decoction of medicinal herbs in the manner described above.

Compresses for mucus in the throat

Compresses are an excellent means of thinning mucus and subsequently removing it from the nasopharynx. The warm fumes emanating from the compress have a healing effect on the nasopharynx.

  1. Take dry cottage cheese; if necessary, squeeze it through cheesecloth to remove excess liquid. Wrap the cottage cheese in a thin natural cloth and apply a compress to the neck area. Cover the top with cling film and wrap the throat with a warm cloth. It is recommended to apply the compress before going to bed.
  2. Another effective and affordable method is to make a compress using the “Star” balm. Apply the balm to your neck and wrap it in a warm towel, apply a compress before going to bed.
  3. A compress can be made from potatoes, which must be boiled, mashed and applied to the throat while still warm, wrapped in a cloth. After the vegetable has cooled, remove the compress.

Mucus in the throat is a common phenomenon that occurs in both adults and children.

There are a huge number of different reasons due to which mucus and a lump in the throat occurs, therefore, in order to establish an accurate diagnosis and get rid of the unpleasant illness forever, it is recommended to consult a doctor. Only a doctor, after conducting examinations and studying all the symptoms of the disease, can provide correct and effective treatment.

How to get rid of mucus in the throat - 10 most effective ways

The accumulation of mucus in the throat causes extremely unpleasant sensations. In most cases, the cause is an upper respiratory tract infection. But heartburn, asthma, allergic reactions and other factors also contribute to the formation of mucus. To get rid of phlegm, you need to understand the exact cause of its appearance.

The human body independently produces mucus that coats various ducts, such as the digestive and respiratory tracts. This mucus performs a supportive and protective function, preventing viruses and bacteria from developing infection. Every day the human body produces about 1 liter of mucus, but we notice it when it becomes too thick or changes color.

Causes of phlegm accumulation in the throat and ways to get rid of it

The accumulation of mucus occurs for several reasons, the main ones being:

1. Heartburn or acid reflux - such problems occur when stomach contents enter the throat.

In this case, a person may feel a burning sensation in the throat, or may not feel anything at all. If a significant amount of mucus has accumulated in the throat, then the same symptoms appear as with a common cold - nasal congestion, discomfort in the larynx, cough.

2. Allergic reaction. Various allergens contribute to an increase in the amount of sputum. For example, an allergy to dust, pollen, animal hair or mold can irritate the throat and provoke mucus production.

3. Asthma - this disease is accompanied by frequent coughing and intermittent breathing, so patients produce more phlegm and experience symptoms similar to allergies.

4. Upper respiratory tract infections. Under the influence of viruses and bacteria, the body begins to produce more phlegm to eliminate harmful microorganisms.

For example, the sinuses become inflamed, swollen, and filled with mucus due to sinusitis. With bacterial sore throat, a significant amount of sputum is also released and accumulates in the throat.

Inflammation of the larynx (laryngitis), accompanied by swelling and irritation, also produces more sputum.

5. Dry mucous membranes can also cause the release of large amounts of mucus. The following factors may be the cause of this dryness:

  • dry indoor air;
  • insufficient fluid intake;
  • abuse of coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages, which cause fluid loss;
  • taking medications (for example, for hypertension).

6. Smoking causes lung irritation and the formation of dark mucus in the throat and airways. When smoking, the mucus becomes thick, making it more difficult to get rid of. Nicotine provokes frequent coughing and other health problems - the risk of developing infectious diseases, pneumonia, emphysema and oncology increases.

7. Certain foods can lead to increased mucus production. For example, dairy products make phlegm thicker, and if a person is lactose intolerant, then consuming dairy products causes excess mucus to form in the throat.

8. The period of bearing a child in women causes hormonal changes in the body, so sputum production increases at this time.

9. Exposure to toxins. When you inhale certain chemicals, for example, the smell of household detergents or paint fumes, irritation of the nasal passages occurs and phlegm accumulates in the throat.

Toxins can also cause other problems with the respiratory system - a burning sensation in the mouth, headaches, severe coughing, and the formation of green or yellow mucus.

To prevent any negative consequences when working with various chemicals, you need to use a protective mask and thoroughly ventilate the room.

How to get rid of mucus

There are several effective ways to reduce the amount of mucus in the throat:

1. Rinse

To rinse, you must use sea or salt water (in the latter case, it is important to use a moderate amount of salt so as not to increase dryness). To prepare the solution, you will need to dilute half or one teaspoon of salt in a glass of water and add a little soda. You need to gargle several times daily.

2. Steam

To clear your nasal passages and minimize the amount of phlegm in your throat, you need to breathe in steam. To do this you will need:

  • fill a pan or deep bowl with boiled hot water;
  • the water temperature should not exceed 70 degrees, so as not to burn the mucous membrane;
  • for better penetration of steam into the nasal passages, cover yourself with a towel and lean over the pan (bowl);
  • take a comfortable position and breathe in the steam;
  • To enhance the effect, you can add a few drops of essential oil of lavender, sage, fir, cedar or eucalyptus to the water. These oils help clear the air of allergens and prevent infections from entering the respiratory tract.

You can also breathe warm steam using a special inhaler.

3. Nasal rinsing

You can rinse the nasal passages using a spray (sold in a pharmacy) or a special small teapot and a syringe without a needle. To prepare the solution you need:

  • dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a glass of water (distilled);
  • tilt your head to one side over the sink, place the spout of the kettle in the upper nostril and slowly pour the solution so that the liquid flows out of the lower nostril;
  • Repeat similar steps on the other side.

4. Ginger

Since ancient times, ginger has been used to prevent colds, as it has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, scientists have proven that ginger tea is especially useful, as it effectively fights diseases of the upper respiratory tract. To prepare this tea you will need:

  • grate a piece of ginger (3 cm will be enough);
  • pour boiling water over the resulting slurry;
  • leave for ten to fifteen minutes.

Ginger tea should be drunk two to three times a day; to improve the taste, you can add honey or lemon to it.

5. Turmeric

Thanks to the content of curcumin in this herbal plant, which has medicinal and antiseptic properties, you can quickly get rid of excess phlegm and bacteria. To prepare a solution for gargling you need:

  • Stir a teaspoon of turmeric in a glass of water;
  • add a little salt;
  • mix thoroughly and gargle three to four times a day.

6. Honey and lemon

Natural honey has antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties, and also has a positive effect on the throat mucosa.

According to studies conducted by Canadian scientists, even a small portion of honey can relieve excess mucus and cough.

For better effect, you can add lemon to honey, which clears the nasal passages and strengthens the immune system. To reduce the amount of mucus in the throat you need:

  • add a tablespoon of honey and a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice to a glass of water. The drink should be drunk several times a day;
  • you can simply eat two or three tablespoons of honey daily.

7. Spicy foods

Wasabi, mustard, horseradish and hot pepper help to quickly get rid of nasal congestion. You can eat spicy foods if you tolerate them well. This is a really effective way to get rid of excess mucus. According to studies, spicy foods reduce phlegm production because they contain allyl mustard oil and capsaicin.

8. Apple cider vinegar

It allows you to restore the alkaline balance in the body and prevent the formation of large amounts of mucus. Use vinegar as follows:

  • stir one tablespoon of vinegar in a glass of water;
  • drink the resulting solution two to three times a day;
  • gargle with the solution.

9. Water

To thin the mucus, you need to drink more fluid. Try to drink at least two liters of fluid daily - water, tea or herbal drink. Turmeric and chamomile drinks are especially beneficial.

10. Singing

During singing, the throat vibrates and the mucus becomes thinner. Therefore, hum your favorite song for one or two minutes every day, and positive results will not be long in coming.

But if singing makes you uncomfortable, choose any of the other options above. The methods listed above are really effective if you have a sore throat and phlegm accumulation.

Causes of phlegm in the throat without coughing, treatment of phlegm in the throat

Sputum is a pathological substance secreted mainly by the bronchi and trachea. Most often, the appearance of phlegm in the throat is accompanied by a cough, but in some cases, increased secretion of phlegm can occur without a cough.

Normally, there is no mucus in the throat, and the tracheobronchial structures contain mucus, which has a bactericidal effect and contributes to the death of inhaled bacteria and dust particles. The amount of such mucus does not exceed 0.1 liters and, if it enters the oral cavity, it is either swallowed or spat out by a person.

Types of phlegm in the throat

Before talking about phlegm in the throat in the absence of a cough, it is necessary to understand the types of this secretion. By the nature of sputum one can judge its composition.

  • Regular sputum is a mucous discharge. Does not contain any impurities and resembles slightly viscous saliva. As a rule, there is no distinctive smell.
  • Mucopurulent sputum - in addition to mucus, it contains accumulations of purulent elements. A distinctive point is that there is much more mucus in this sputum than pus.
  • The purulent-mucous character is distinguished by a large amount of pus with a heavy type of mucus.
  • Purulent sputum - discharge is characterized by the presence of “pure” pus without mucus. Most often it has an unpleasant odor and a whitish or yellowish-white tint.
  • Muco-bloody sputum - its composition has a large amount of mucous component mixed with blood streaks.
  • The mucous-bloody-purulent nature of sputum is distinguished by the content of mucous, purulent and blood components in equal volumes.
  • Bloody sputum - practically does not contain mucus and contains “pure” blood (possibly in the form of veins, coagules).
  • Serous-mucous sputum - consists mainly of blood plasma, which sweats into the cavity of the bronchial tree.

It should also be noted that sputum in the throat without coughing can be divided depending on the consistency: liquid, mucus-like, thick and viscous. All this depends on the amount of mucus and the presence of impurities (blood cells, purulent particles, ciliated epithelium or detritus).

Causes of phlegm in the throat

There are many reasons for the formation of sputum, its entry into the throat and constant discomfort in the mouth from its excess.

Let's look at the most common causes of mucous sputum:

  • Acute bronchitis - in the initial stages of this disease, sputum may appear in the throat without a cough. The sputum is of a normal mucous nature, no impurities are detected. As the course of the disease worsens, the presence of sputum is undoubtedly accompanied by a cough, the mucous character can turn into mucopurulent, and general symptoms may also appear, such as weakness and an increase in temperature to subfebrile levels.
  • Qatar URT (upper respiratory tract), or, more simply, a cold, is also characterized by the possible presence of mucous sputum. However, here the presence of sputum in the throat without cough and other signs of the disease can be as residual effects after the disease. This is due to the removal and elimination of detritus from the respiratory tract.
  • Bronchial asthma is a hypersecretion of mucus that forms during an attack, is removed from the respiratory tract and enters the oral cavity and pharynx. Sometimes, in the initial stages of not yet established bronchial asthma, the constant presence of phlegm in the throat may be the only sign.
  • Pharyngitis, or inflammatory changes in the mucous membrane of the pharynx - cough in the case of the initial symptoms of pharyngitis may be absent, but discomfort in the form of a sore throat is still observed.
  • Acute sinusitis is a leading symptom of the presence of mucus in the throat without coughing. The appearance of phlegm-like mucus, which is often confused with “true” phlegm, is associated with the flow of mucus from the inflamed areas of the maxillary sinuses along the nasopharynx, as a result of which this mucus appears in the mouth and causes discomfort.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a disease characterized by the reflux of gastric contents into the cavity of the esophagus, which provokes the development of inflammatory processes. With a long course of the disease, as a result of a violation of the evacuation of the contents of the stomach and its reflux into the esophagus, food passes into its upper sections. Compensatory mechanisms in the upper esophagus contribute to the formation of mucus, which can end up in the throat and resemble phlegm. In addition to mucus in the throat, there is sour belching, soreness, and pain along the esophagus.
  • Zenker's diverticulum - a disease characterized by the presence of a pouch-like protrusion of one of the walls of the esophageal tube, which leads to food entering it and stagnation. As a result of the production of secretion by the mucous membrane of the esophagus, its accumulation in the Zenker diverticulum leads to entry into the oral cavity. This is one of the important and leading symptoms of pathology of the upper esophagus. When the process becomes chronic and becomes purulent, the mucus acquires a purulent-mucous character, and the clinical picture may change towards mediastinitis.
  • Chronic or vasomotor rhinitis - a distinctive feature is the presence of a runny nose and nasal congestion. Mucus from the nasal cavity flows down the nasopharynx and into the throat, where it brings constant discomfort due to the lack of treatment for rhinitis.
  • Allergic phenomena.
  • Autoimmune diseases with pathological changes in glandular tissue (for example, Sjogren's syndrome). Constant dry mouth creates a false sensation of phlegm in the throat, but no cough is observed. Associated symptoms include dry eyes with a feeling of sand or dust, and dysphagic disorders.

The most common causes of mucopurulent sputum in the throat

  • Chronic bronchitis is a constant discomfort that causes an accumulation of phlegm in the throat and is common among smokers who have already quit smoking. In this case, there may be no cough, but mucous sputum with streaks of pus as a result of inflammatory changes in the bronchi is present.
  • Bronchopneumonia. Of course, it depends on the degree of activity of the infectious process, and in some cases the mucopurulent nature of the sputum is not accompanied by a cough, however, there are other symptoms: general weakness, malaise and constant drowsiness, fever up to febrility. Sputum examination, x-ray examination and laboratory manipulations (blood test, leukocytogram) help to confirm the diagnosis.
  • Chronic sinusitis has the same symptoms as acute sinusitis (described above), but its course is long, and the accompanying symptoms are more pronounced (an admixture of pus appears in the mucus, the temperature rises to febrile levels, a “terrible” headache and pain in the sinuses, general malaise .

The main reasons for the appearance of purulent mucous sputum in the throat without coughing

  • Bronchopneumonia. A feature of this disease is the presence of purulent-mucous sputum, less often with an admixture of blood, against the background of cough-free symptoms. A dry cough, of course, can appear over time, but already in the active phase of the disease. Along with sputum, signs of bronchopneumonia may include increased body temperature, dullness of percussion sound and bright auscultation data (small and large bubble rales, crepitus), as well as X-ray signs of focal pneumonia.
  • Croupous pneumonia - a mild course of this disease is accompanied by the release of a fairly large amount of sputum, and auscultation data (in addition to wheezing, pleural friction noise is heard due to the addition of pleurisy) and a chest x-ray help to differentiate the diagnosis.

The causes of purulent sputum are:

  • Abscessation of the lung with a breakthrough into the bronchus.
  • Empyema of the pleura with opening into the bronchus.

The discharge of purulent sputum and its appearance in the throat in both of the above diseases is very rarely the only sign of the disease. Most often, there are accompanying symptoms - fever, cough (may be absent at the onset of the disease), general serious condition, hemodynamic disturbances and respiratory failure.

The main causes of mucous-bloody and serous sputum are:

  • Lung and bronchial cancer - as a result of the progression of the process, in addition to purulent discharge, an admixture of blood appears. This is due to the disintegration of the tumor, the destruction of nearby blood vessels, and the growth of cancer into neighboring structures. Cough is one of the most common symptoms, but is not necessary and may sometimes be absent.
  • Acute cardiac (left ventricular) failure leads to pulmonary edema with further sweating of plasma elements of the blood into the bronchial cavity, which leads to the appearance of serous sputum in the throat. Also, the appearance of serous sputum in the throat may indicate a pathology of the mitral valve, for example, mitral stenosis, which can be associated with both congenital and acquired characteristics (for example, rheumatic defects, infectious).
