When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

The health of a pregnant woman is very vulnerable, because against the background of changes occurring in her body, her immunity decreases.

An expectant mother can easily catch a cold, causing her to develop a dry cough that tears her throat and damages her vocal cords.

In this article we will tell you how to cure dry cough during pregnancy in different ways, but without harming the baby’s health.

Causes of dry cough during pregnancy

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

A dry cough can manifest itself as a symptom of an infectious cold, which is always treated with antibacterial therapy - tablets or injections. We are talking about diseases such as:

  • Measles.
  • Sinusitis.
  • Whooping cough.
  • Allergy.
  • ORZ.
  • ARVI.
  • Tuberculosis.
  • Pneumonia.
  • Bronchitis.
  • Tonsillitis.
  • Rubella.

As you know, it is forbidden to take medications during pregnancy, because they can harm the baby and negatively affect the course of pregnancy. But it is impossible not to treat a dry cough, because because of it a woman can lose her child. We will talk more about these dangers below.

Dangers of dry cough during pregnancy in the 1st trimester

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

In the first trimester, the baby is formed and its internal organs are formed. During this period, it is very important what condition the health of the expectant mother is in.

Against the background of toxicosis and weakened immunity, it is during this period of pregnancy that the risk of contracting a cold, accompanied by a dry and hacking cough, increases sharply.

This cough in the first weeks of pregnancy can lead to the following complications:

  • The uterine tone will increase due to the fact that the walls of the abdominal cavity are too tense.
  • The child will suffer due to lack of oxygen and other nutrients.
  • A spontaneous abortion will occur.

Dangers of dry cough during pregnancy in the 2nd trimester

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

If a pregnant woman gets sick at 20-32 weeks, it is less dangerous for the baby’s life, since it is protected by the placenta, which acts as a barrier that prevents infection from reaching the fetus. But there are still other reasons for concern:

  • Due to infection, fetoplacental insufficiency may develop. For this reason, the child will not gain weight well. And without it, after giving birth, he will not be able to survive.
  • A dry cough will again affect the walls of the abdominal cavity, due to which the nervous and endocrine system of the fetus can be greatly affected.
  • An expectant mother's hacking cough can have a negative impact on the baby's bone tissue.

Dangers of dry cough during pregnancy in the 3rd trimester

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

If a pregnant woman gets sick in the last weeks of pregnancy, this will not have a bad effect on the baby’s health. Problems that may arise are:

  1. The placenta can become infected, since in the last stages it begins to age, and, therefore, becomes more vulnerable. It can no longer perform a protective function, so the fetus may develop intrauterine pathologies.
  2. A dry cough may cause problems with lactation.
  3. Due to a hacking cough, premature labor may begin. Even worse, placental abruption or rupture of amniotic fluid may occur ahead of schedule.

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

While carrying a baby, a woman’s body becomes vulnerable to various viruses and infections. This is due to the fact that the immune system of the expectant mother works in an enhanced mode, providing reliable protection to the fetus, therefore, during pregnancy, ARVI often occurs, the first sign of which is a runny nose and cough.

Dry coughs during pregnancy pose a danger to the baby and the mother herself, so it is extremely important to start proper treatment in a timely manner.

Why does a dry cough occur in pregnant women: the main reasons

A dry cough during pregnancy can occur for many reasons, so before choosing an effective treatment, the woman should be examined by a doctor. Depending on the causes of cough, the principles of therapy will differ.

A dry cough in a pregnant woman occurs for the following reasons:

  • viral infections of the upper respiratory tract - laryngitis, tracheitis, bronchitis (see How and how to treat bronchitis and cough in an adult), tracheobronchitis, adenoiditis;
  • diseases of the nasopharynx of a viral or infectious nature - pharyngitis, tonsillitis, rhinitis, tonsillitis;
  • allergic reactions - develop to house dust, animal hair, flower and grass pollen, synthetic detergents, pillow fluff;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, in particular reflux esophagitis - with this pathology, the contents of the stomach are refluxed into the esophagus, resulting in a coughing attack;
  • tumors of the esophagus and upper respiratory tract;

Dry cough in pregnant women most often appears as a result of acute respiratory viral infections, so it is extremely important to start proper treatment on time so that the disease does not progress and spread to the lower respiratory tract.

Important! Attacks of dry cough in a pregnant woman lead to increased pressure and compression of blood vessels in the uterus, resulting in insufficient oxygen and nutrients reaching the fetus. In addition, due to frequent coughing, the anterior abdominal wall becomes tense, which can provoke the discharge of amniotic fluid and premature birth.

Drug treatment of dry cough

Dry cough during pregnancy 1st trimester is complicated by the fact that most medications are strictly contraindicated.

This is due to the fact that in the first 12 weeks the formation and laying of all the internal organs of the fetus occurs, and the effect of drugs on a woman’s body can grossly disrupt this delicate process and cause congenital anomalies and defects.

What can pregnant women do for dry cough? We will answer this question below; the table shows drugs approved for use by pregnant women starting in the first trimester.

Attention! Despite the fact that the listed drugs are approved for use during pregnancy, before starting treatment you should consult a doctor, since cough is not always a manifestation of ARVI and then the pregnant woman needs completely different therapy.

A dry cough during pregnancy caused by the influence of allergens is eliminated by ventilating the room, carrying out wet cleaning, humidifying the air, and cleaning sources of dust accumulations. In some cases, it is advisable to prescribe antihistamines, which the doctor will select. The price of such products depends on the manufacturer, composition and form of release of the drug.

How to get rid of dry cough during pregnancy without using medications?

Alas, sometimes it is impossible to do without the help of drug therapy, especially if the cough is accompanied by severe weakness of the patient, high body temperature, nasal congestion and muscle aches. In this situation, the effect of drugs on the pregnant woman’s body will cause much less harm to the fetus than an untreated disease and complications that develop.

Traditional treatment for dry cough

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

What can pregnant women do if they have a dry cough, if they are still very young and the woman is afraid of harming the baby?

In this situation, traditional medicine recipes help:

  1. Milk with soda and honey - add a teaspoon of honey and ¼ teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of hot milk. Drink this drink in small sips in the evening before bed, wrapped in a warm blanket;
  2. Badger fat for cough during pregnancy - melt a small amount of fat in a water bath and rub the warm fat into the pregnant woman’s chest with massage movements. After this, wrap the chest and back with a warm down scarf and cover with a blanket so that the woman sweats properly. The very next day, the dry cough will decrease;
  3. Thyme, linden, honey - steam 1 tablespoon of thyme and linden in 1 liter of boiling water, let it brew, strain, add honey to a warm drink and drink 3 times a day in small sips. This herbal tea not only has a powerful expectorant effect, but also has an anti-inflammatory and calming effect on the body.

Inhalations for cough

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

For dry coughs in expectant mothers, warm inhalations with decoctions of medicinal herbs (see Inhalations for cough during pregnancy: how not to harm yourself), essential oils or regular baking soda help well. To do this, add the desired decoction (sage, chamomile, thyme, eucalyptus) or oil (mat, eucalyptus, fir, pine) to a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel and breathe through your nose or open mouth for 15 minutes.

If the water is very hot, you can make a small vent in the towel through which steam will escape. This method of treating dry cough is very effective, but has its side effects and contraindications.

Attention! If a pregnant woman suffers from arterial hypertension or bronchial asthma, then treatment of cough with hot inhalations is not suitable for her, as it can lead to aggravation of her illness.

Inhalations for dry coughs are also done using an ultrasonic or compressor nebulizer. The video in this article shows how to use this device and what medications are best to use for the procedure. When using a nebulizer, medicinal substances enter deep into the respiratory tract, which increases the effectiveness of inhalation.

Compresses for dry cough

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

Dry cough during pregnancy can be effectively treated with a compress of honey and cabbage. Honey should be thickly spread on the pregnant woman's chest and a cabbage leaf should be placed on top, then a warm scarf or woolen scarf should be wrapped around the chest.

In the morning you need to take a shower to wash off any remaining honey. This compress deeply warms the chest, thereby reducing attacks of dry cough, but the method is not suitable for women who are allergic to bee products.

Any cough that occurs in a woman during pregnancy should not be ignored by a doctor. Remember that you have a small life inside you, and only you are responsible for the health of your unborn child. The causes of cough can be minor or pose a serious threat to health, but this can only be determined by a competent specialist.

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

Pregnancy and cough are a common tandem that causes panic in every expectant mother. Bronchospasm is a natural reaction of the body to harmful microbes entering the respiratory system. For pregnant women, a typical cold can become a serious illness. Therefore, it is important to understand how to treat attacks and which medications should be avoided.

Cough during pregnancy: causes and symptoms

During pregnancy, a woman's body becomes vulnerable. A primitive cold can harm the unborn baby and put the respiratory system at risk. A dry cough in a pregnant woman is easy to recognize; the main symptoms manifest themselves in a characteristic way:

  • there is a feeling of dryness in the throat, it hurts to speak and swallow hard food;
  • attacks pass without sputum production;
  • night sleep is disturbed due to regular spasms and unpleasant sensations.

Dry cough in pregnant women cannot be ignored. It is better to consult a therapist who will prescribe competent treatment taking into account the characteristics of the female body. Gestational age is also an important indicator when drawing up a prescription for therapy.

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

A medical specialist must accurately determine the etiology of the spasm; this is the only way to select competent treatment. Here are the main causes of cough in pregnant women:

  1. Inflammatory processes in the oral cavity, which initially manifest as small ulcers on the palate or tongue.
  2. In the 1st trimester, an allergic reaction to certain foods may appear, accompanied by severe bronchospasms.
  3. ARI - in this case, only a specialist will tell you how to treat a dry cough during pregnancy.
  4. Dry throat due to smoking.
  5. Mental disorder.
  6. Heart disease – very often with this disease the respiratory system is affected.

What can be done if a pregnant patient complains of attacks of dry cough? There are a number of medications designed specifically for pregnant women. Some people prefer to choose alternative medicine. In any case, only a therapist can prescribe competent treatment.

Treatment of dry cough during pregnancy with medications

How to cure bronchospasm without harming the unborn baby? Therapists believe that modern pharmaceutical companies offer many drugs that can be used in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester. Even early pregnancy is not a reason to refuse professional treatment for a serious illness.

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

For cough during pregnancy, you can see the following drugs in a doctor’s prescription:

  • Libexin – has an anti-inflammatory effect. The medicine is sold in the form of tablets, the effect occurs after the second day of active use according to the instructions;
  • Sinekod - can be taken in the 2nd trimester for dry cough. Sold in syrup form, this form is ideal for ladies suffering from a sensitive reaction to pills;
  • Herbion is a product in the form of a syrup, which is made only on the basis of plant extracts. It will help relieve an attack, especially when bronchospasm prevents you from enjoying a night's rest.

Cough medications should not be self-prescribed. An ill-chosen drug can harm the fetus - stop development or provoke a miscarriage. In 20% of cases, gynecologists claim that women lose children due to taking strong medications, without thinking about the consequences.

Effective cough tablets for a pregnant woman

Treatment of dry cough during pregnancy should be carried out only under the supervision of a therapist and gynecologist. The following tablets are available to help you get rid of cramps:

  1. Mucaltin - the active components included in the composition, dilute the secretions of the lower respiratory tract. They also protect the walls of these organs from unwanted damage. For coughs, the medication is effective, but we must not forget about the marshmallow herbs added to the tablets. In large quantities they can cause miscarriage. Therefore, it is not recommended to prescribe them before the second trimester.
  2. Bronchipret is a universal medicine that helps with any type of spasm. A large number of herbs in the composition helps make the cough productive in 2-3 days. It is forbidden to drink them during the first trimester.
  3. Thermopsis - effective tablets. Cough during pregnancy in the early stages should be treated with caution with this drug. It is necessary to correctly calculate the dosage, since in large quantities this medication causes uterine contractions and increases blood pressure.
  4. Dr. Theiss - chewable tablets based on plant extracts. Such drugs may cause a gag reflex if the taste seems unpleasant.

What syrup should I give if my child has a wet cough?When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

You cannot get rid of cramps on your own. Cough is a symptom of the disease, so it is important to make an accurate diagnosis before prescribing medications. There are a lot of pills in the pharmacy, but not all of them are suitable for pregnant women.

Inhalations and pregnancy

During pregnancy, choosing treatment is problematic. Any doctor will play it safe so as not to harm the unborn baby. Therefore, to get rid of bronchospasms, traditional methods of therapy are increasingly being used. Inhalations are the easiest method to cure a severe cough.

How to do this procedure correctly? Inhalation is performed by alternating inhalations and exhalations. First, the therapeutic steam is deeply captured by the nose and the air is released through the mouth. Next, inhalation is done through the mouth and exit through the nose. It is better to close your eyes so as not to cause a vapor burn.

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

Many doctors recommend treating cough in early pregnancy with inhalations:

  1. Honey “bath” - for this, two tablespoons of honey are dissolved in two glasses of boiling water. The syrup is placed on the fire until it boils. The patient sits under the blanket with a saucepan and inhales the vapors for three minutes.
  2. Potato inhalation - for this, the vegetable is boiled in its peel. Such relieving procedures should be carried out before bedtime. This method of therapy can be used in three trimesters.
  3. Inhalations based on herbs - a decoction is prepared at the rate of 1 tablespoon per 1.5 glasses of water. In this way, a relieved cough that is not accompanied by other signs of disease can be cured. Dried plantain leaves, St. John's wort, chamomile, sage or nettle are suitable for this.

In the first and second trimesters, inhalations will become a real salvation from bronchospasms. Folk remedies for cough can be gotten rid of if the disease occurs in its initial form. Any medicinal decoction should be taken after talking with a gynecologist or therapist. Herbal tea is not always safe, especially when the expectant mother is only in the early stages of pregnancy.

Decoctions, rinses and compresses

Treatment of cough during pregnancy with herbs is a common option. In the third trimester, you can consume more herbal ingredients than in the first month. If a woman becomes pregnant and has a dry cough, the following decoctions can be prepared:

  • Pine buds need to be poured with a glass of boiling water, the drink will infuse for 40-50 minutes. Next, it is filtered and consumed 2-4 times a day, a tablespoon;
  • Boil 05 kg of bran in three liters of water. Cook the mixture for 10-12 minutes. The decoction is drunk warm throughout the day;
  • A teaspoon of poppy seeds is crushed and thrown into a glass of boiled milk. The drink is drunk before bedtime.

During pregnancy in the 3rd trimester and earlier, you can gargle to reduce the irritation effect during a spasm. To prepare the required solution, you should resort to folk remedies. Herbal infusions and regular baking soda diluted in a glass of warm water work well.

During early pregnancy, you should not make compresses from mustard plasters. For this procedure, it is better to use honey or boiled potatoes. The compress is done before going to bed, the main thing is not to put the warm product in the heart area.

Pregnancy is a wonderful time. It is best to prevent diseases; this is the only way to protect the fetus from the negative consequences of therapy.

How to treat dry cough during pregnancy

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

The appearance of a dry cough makes a woman worry because she fears not only for her health, but also for the health of her unborn baby. Let's try to figure out the difference between a dry cough and how to treat it during pregnancy.

Why does a dry cough occur during pregnancy?

The cough reflex occurs due to irritation of the mucous membranes of the trachea, bronchi, and larynx as a result of chemicals entering the respiratory tract, mechanical damage to the surface, the introduction of viruses, bacteria, etc. Swelling, inflammation, and disruption of the integrity of the surface of the respiratory organs causes a cough reflex when the respiratory muscles contract and try to “throw away” the irritating factor.

In order to take measures to treat dry cough in pregnant women, it is important to understand how to treat it, and this is determined depending on the etiology. A cough in a pregnant woman can occur for a very wide range of reasons:

  • a pregnant woman continues to smoke;
  • an allergy of unknown nature appeared;
  • consequence of a disease (for example, sinusitis);
  • symptom of acute respiratory disease;
  • provoked by excitement, nervous overexcitation;
  • insufficient air humidity in the room;
  • the cough reflex is provoked by the presence of heart failure;
  • The source of cough is dust, etc.

The most common cause of a dry cough is ARVI (acute respiratory viral infection), commonly called a cold. Expectant mothers cannot ignore this “simple disease”; they need to take action immediately.

How to distinguish a dry cough from a wet one

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

There are such types of cough as wet (productive) and dry (non-productive).

A wet cough begins as a reaction to irritation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory organs by accumulated phlegm; then, after it has passed, the cough stops until phlegm accumulates again.

A nonproductive cough appears in the initial stages of the disease, when the mucous membranes of the respiratory organs become inflamed or fibrinous films form on the surface of the bronchi or trachea; it is not associated with the release of sputum from the respiratory tract. Effective treatment will be provided by certain remedies that are recommended for dry cough during pregnancy.

Antitussives will provide relief and change the nature of the cough.

What can you take for a dry cough during pregnancy? There is a lot of controversy about this.

The opinion that pregnant women cannot be treated with medication is quite dangerous, since the lack of emergency treatment contributes to prolongation of the infection process and the occurrence of complications - as a result, already poor health is prolonged for an unknown period.

Modern medicine has in its arsenal a sufficient number of products developed for pregnant and lactating women and including herbal ingredients. Many drugs are allowed even in early pregnancy.

A consultation with a doctor will help identify the causes of the disease and understand how to treat dry cough in pregnant women, and choose the right individual treatment regimen that will not have a negative effect on the fetus.

Cough preparations for pregnant women

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancyIn the early stages of the disease, if its course is not severe, the doctor will not prescribe drugs belonging to the class of antibiotics, analgesics, or codeine-containing ones. To treat a nonproductive cough, medications are used that, at the onset of colds, suppress the cough reflex until sputum is produced.

To treat dry cough, there are antitussives in different forms:

The following products are allowed for use:

  • Libexin is a safe medicine for dry cough for pregnant women, which has an additional calming and anti-inflammatory effect;
  • Bronchicum is a combined antitussive drug based on thyme, primrose, which also reduces inflammation, eliminates foci of infection, thins and removes mucus (not recommended in the first trimester);
  • Sinekod - relieves attacks of severe, painful cough, reduces inflammation, eliminates foci of infection, thins and removes mucous secretions (not recommended in the first trimester);
  • Stoptussin - reduces the intensity of cough symptoms, has a mucolytic effect, reduces the severity of the inflammatory process (not recommended in the first trimester);
  • Herbion is a syrup based on plant raw materials, has an antitussive, expectorant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect, which has a mucolytic effect (herbion for dry cough during pregnancy is recommended for use with caution).

In addition to the listed remedies, sprays, rinses and inhalations are actively used, as well as folk remedies for dry cough during pregnancy.

Antiseptic sprays

If a dry cough appears during pregnancy and the question of how to cure it is being decided, preference is often given to medications in the form of a spray.

These are drugs with “instant” complex action: when you press the dispenser, the smallest particles of active substances fall on the mucous membranes of the respiratory system and immediately eliminate symptoms such as sore throat, dry throat, and swelling. The advantage of this form is that it does not enter the gastrointestinal tract and from there into the blood, so the harmful effects of the spray components on other systems are practically not detected.

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

  • Tantum Verde is the safest drug for dry cough during pregnancy, a medicine with the active ingredient benzydamine hydrochloride; produces antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory effects;
  • Chlorophyllipt is a medicine with herbal components with antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects;
  • Inhalipt is an antimicrobial drug with natural ingredients and sulfathiazole;
  • Hexoral is a hexetidine-based antiseptic containing essential oils of eucalyptus tree;
  • Cametone is a spray with an antimicrobial effect that reduces inflammation, containing essential oils of eucalyptus leaves, camphor and chlorethone.

Rinse

Rinsing is the safest method of treatment. They have a local effect, alleviating the patient’s condition, eliminating (“washing out”) mucous formations from the cavity of the respiratory organs and destroying foci of infection on their surface.

It is recommended to rinse with solutions of the following medications:

In addition to these solutions, rinsing with infusions and decoctions of herbs is effective:

  • chamomile;
  • sage;
  • calendula;
  • eucalyptus, etc.

Inhalations

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

Among folk remedies, inhalations based on a solution of honey, a steam of freshly boiled potatoes, a decoction of garlic, infusions and decoctions of herbs and their mixtures (sage, chamomile, calendula, nettle, burdock, coltsfoot, plantain, eucalyptus, St. John's wort) are considered effective.

At home, improvised means and ordinary utensils will be useful for the listed procedures.

A more modern means is an inhaler (nebulizer), in which you can place medication solutions or herbal infusions for the procedure. Its advantage is not only ease of use, but also the fact that there is no need to inhale the hot composition, which does not always have only a beneficial effect.

During the day, it is enough to carry out two inhalation sessions, the second preferably before bedtime.

Folk remedies for dry cough

For oral administration, traditional medicine recommends the following infusions of herbs and plants:

  • a mixture of raspberry leaves, chamomile flowers, mint leaves, marshmallow root, clover flowers (infusion prepared in a water bath);
  • figs boiled in milk;
  • sage infused with milk;
  • a mixture of coltsfoot leaves with crushed marshmallow root;
  • rose hip;
  • viburnum fruits, etc.

Traditional medicine recommends drinking warm milk with honey, carrot juice, tea with raspberries and lemon.

There are also folk recipes for potions:

Folk remedies have no side effects, but are most often used as auxiliaries in the main drug treatment.

Are expectorants needed for dry cough in pregnant women?

Dry cough is treated with antitussive drugs that are not combined with expectorants and mucolytics.

Relief of the general condition usually occurs when the cough enters the wet stage. Expectorants should be taken only for wet coughs; they reduce the viscosity of sputum and remove it from the respiratory system.

When a wet cough occurs, expectorants such as Mucaltin, marshmallow root syrup, Tussin are allowed to be used, and during pregnancy, dry medicine can be used in accordance with the instructions.

Treatment of dry cough during pregnancy

When and how to treat dry cough during pregnancy

Before treating any cough in anyone, two questions must be addressed: the nature of the cough and the cause of it.

A dry cough is a cough in which sputum is either not produced or is produced, but in very scanty quantities. That is why doctors call this cough unproductive. For it to become productive (that is, wet or moist, producing phlegm), mucus must form. In the meantime, you will be tormented by a dry cough, often hysterical and debilitating.

To alleviate the patient’s condition, it is necessary to calm the dry cough. For this purpose, antitussive drugs are traditionally used to soothe the mucous membrane, as a result of which a dry cough stops and turns into a wet one.

Causes of dry cough

There are many reasons that cause a dry cough. These are various diseases (measles, whooping cough, sinusitis, tuberculosis and others), allergic exacerbations and the initial stage of acute respiratory infections.

During pregnancy, a dry cough most often occurs for the latter reason, and is often accompanied by a runny nose, fever and other symptoms of ARVI. There is no point in waiting until your cough becomes wet for several reasons.

A dry cough causes severe discomfort, prevents you from sleeping, breathing normally, and your stomach is constantly under its influence. After all, during coughing, ligaments contract and muscles tense.

And this is not just painful or unpleasant, but can also be dangerous: with placenta previa and low position, a dry cough can provoke bleeding. Therefore, he needs to be treated, or rather, calmed down.

Treatment of dry cough during pregnancy

As we have already said, this can be done with the help of antitussive medications. As a rule, they also have an analgesic, sedative and weak antispasmodic effect. Just read the ingredients of the drug carefully.

It must not contain any drugs (for example, codeine or morphine). And in general, use the golden rule when choosing medications: during pregnancy, you can only use those medications that are approved for children under three years of age.

But since taking any medications, even the most harmless ones, during pregnancy and especially in its first trimester is extremely undesirable, it is still better to try to solve the problem with improvised means, that is, with traditional medicine methods.

Here everything depends on the characteristics of your body (in particular, on the tolerance of certain components) and on how interested you are in finding a harmless, effective medicine.

First aid for dry cough are inhalations: the effect is immediate. Inhaling the vapors of boiled potatoes (preferably in their uniforms), baking soda or alkaline mineral water calms well. But you can make a herbal decoction. For dry cough, decoctions of chamomile, sage, trifoliate, plantain, St. John's wort, and linden blossom are used for inhalation.

Regarding inhalations, it is good if you have a nebulizer or inhaler for this purpose. But you can also do it the old-fashioned way: using a paper funnel or a teapot. You can also breathe directly over the pan, but keep in mind that this method is contraindicated if you have high blood pressure. And never inhale over boiling water: start inhaling the vapors 5 minutes after the water boils.

Herbal infusions

Herbal decoctions are useful not only for inhalations. There are many recipes using herbs to help relieve dry cough:

  • Boil 3 liters of water, add 500 g of wheat or rye bran, bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes, strain. Sweeten with burnt sugar. The entire portion of the decoction should be drunk during the day, but always hot. An effective remedy for severe, debilitating cough.
  • Grind 1 teaspoon of poppy seeds into powder and mix with 50 ml of warm milk. Drink in one go. The infusion relieves chest pain and softens cough.
  • Pour 1 tablespoon of pine buds with 1 glass of boiling water, leave, covered, for 40 minutes, strain. Take 1-2 sips when you feel the urge to cough. Helps immediately.
  • Mix 3 tablespoons of linden blossom and 2 tablespoons of thyme flowers, pour 1 liter of boiling water, leave in a boiling water bath for 15-20 minutes. Take with honey for a very severe cough. It is advisable to drink a large dose in the evening, as the infusion has a calming effect.
  • Take equal parts of plantain leaves, cinnamon rose hips, spring primrose herb, and chamomile flowers. Brew two tablespoons with two glasses of boiling water, heat for 20 minutes in a water bath and leave for another half hour, covered, warm, and strain. Take a third of a glass 3-4 times a day, you can sweeten it with honey.
  • Mix pine buds, large plantain leaves, chamomile flowers and coltsfoot grass in equal proportions. Brew two tablespoons of the crushed mixture with two glasses of boiling water, heat in a water bath for 20 minutes, strain. Take half a glass warm 3 times a day.
  • Mix equal amounts of anise and fennel fruits, flax seed and thyme herb. Pour a tablespoon of the mixture into a glass of cooled boiled water and leave for 2 hours, then bring the infusion to a boil, cool, and strain. Take a third of a glass 3 times a day.
  • Infuse 1 tablespoon of crushed marshmallow root in a glass of cold water overnight (8-10 hours), strain. Take a third of a glass 3 times a day.

  • Boil a medium-sized onion in 0.5 liters of milk and add a spoonful of honey. This mixture should be consumed at night. The milk is very tasty, does not smell of onions at all, and even children drink it easily. A dry cough after it becomes softer and goes away faster.
  • Pour 1 tablespoon of thyme into a glass of boiling water, leave for one hour under the lid and strain. Take a tablespoon 3 times a day.

Warm milk with a small amount of baking soda will help quickly turn a dry cough into a productive one: a quarter of a teaspoon of soda per glass. You can also dilute the milk halfway with mineral water or drink traditional milk with honey.

Rinse

You can soothe a painful, dry cough by gargling. The procedure should be carried out after meals or in between meals. The following fees can be used for this purpose.

  • In equal parts, mix and grind sage herb, eucalyptus herb and calendula officinalis flowers. Brew a tablespoon of the mixture with a glass of boiling water and heat for another 10 minutes under the lid in a water bath, without bringing to a boil, then strain. Use warm. The infusion retains its healing properties for only 3-4 hours.
  • In equal parts, mix common raspberry leaves, coltsfoot herb, peppermint herb, chamomile flowers, marshmallow root, pine buds, angustifolia fireweed leaves and meadow clover flowers. Pour a tablespoon of the crushed mixture into a glass of boiling water and heat for another 15 minutes in a water bath under the lid. Pour the infusion into a thermos and leave for 2 hours, strain.
  • Dissolve half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water.
  • Apple cider vinegar will help with a severe cough. Pour 1 tablespoon of vinegar into 0.5 liters of warm boiled water. Gargle every 2 hours.

Do not forget that a dry cough is also provoked by dry air in the room. Therefore, keep an eye on its optimal humidity. If you don't have a humidifier, place a wet towel on the radiator.

You can also humidify the air by spraying water or at least placing bowls of water around the rooms. Unfortunately, no one has canceled regular wet cleaning.

And maybe you don’t care about cleanliness in the house, but to make it easier to breathe, it is advisable to wash the floors.

Undoubtedly, before treating a dry cough during pregnancy, it is necessary for the doctor to determine its cause. And only a doctor should prescribe treatment for you during this period. Non-medicinal - including.
