Codelac with thyme: what cough is this drug used for?

Autumn, as usual, does not come to visit alone, but in an embrace with friends, with a snotty girlfriend - a cold, and a nasty guy with a cough.

Probably many mothers, whose children attend kindergartens, schools and other places where evil accumulates, are familiar with the situation when a child drags out of the urinary area as in that advertisement with Okhlobystin - all the throat and nose infections in the bargain, when the home first aid kit grows to indecent sizes and to what extent -at that moment it already seems to you that you work only for the pharmacy, and the pharmacist is your best friend and almost a relative.

I have an allergic child, throughout our early childhood we suffered from attacks of false croup with every cold, we tried a lot of things, we consulted a lot of people, we suffered a lot with this, so the sounds of coughing for me are like a call - WEAPONS FOR BATTLE.

It is known that if you use the same drug for a long time, then it would be a good idea to change it sometimes, otherwise its effectiveness decreases, as a result of such a change in the inexpensive effective Ambroxol, Codelac Broncho with thyme in the form of an elixir was purchased.

Codelac Broncho with thyme review

Codelac Broncho with thyme is recommended for coughs with difficult sputum discharge for children from 2 years of age and adults.

Packaging: a cardboard box in the color of the night sky, which contains a glass bottle with a screw cap. The set includes a measuring spoon designed for patients of different ages.

Codelac with thyme: what cough is this drug used for?

Indications for use:

Diseases of the respiratory tract with the formation of viscous sputum: acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, COPD, bronchiectasis.

Compound:

ambroxol hydrochloride, trisodium salt, glycyrrhizic acid, thyme liquid extract, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, sorbitol.

It would seem that Codelac Broncho contains the same ambroxol, so why change the awl for soap? From my own experience, but most of all, alas, from the experience of my child, I can say that not every medicine containing this substance works quickly (which is vitally important in the case of dry cough in croup) or works at all.

Until a certain time, in my naivety, I believed that if there is one active ingredient and in the same quantity in the composition of the medicine, then everything works the same way, but it doesn’t! Analogues are different from analogues, even if they have the same amount of substance.

Fortunately, one day we came across a smart doctor who advised us to throw Lazolvan and his widely publicized brother in the trash and not expect miracles from them.

Manufacturer's promises:

Codelac Broncho with thyme indications for use

The potion or Elixir is yellow in color, has a pronounced herbal smell, tastes sweet, for me it’s even cloying, with a note of thyme. The taste is not unpleasant, but peculiar; if you drink it with water, everything will be fine, even for those who do not like the taste at all.

Codelac with thyme: what cough is this drug used for?

Efficiency: high. Codelac Broncho with thyme quite quickly transforms a dry, unproductive cough into a wet one, I would even say that it does this at a high-speed level. On the second day after starting to take Codelac Broncho, my child was coughing a wet, productive cough and I was able to exhale calmly and sleep peacefully at night.

Around the end of the third day after starting to take Codelac Broncho, the child’s severe, rumbling cough began to weaken, there was less discharge, and this is already a good indicator. The child was given Codelac Broncho for 5 days; on the 5th day, the cough did not disappear completely, but its intensity and frequency decreased noticeably.

I used Codelac for tracheitis, which I have suffered from for a long time.

The throat-ripping cough softens greatly, I felt real relief when I was able to calm down my tracheitis, which was raging due to a cold, those who are familiar with this problem know how much we hate the nights during which you cough with a dry, painful cough, because lying down makes the cough worse. Cough attacks become less frequent and are no longer so painful. Even if tracheitis is advanced, Codelac Broncho with thyme is a good solution for me.

  • The discharge of sputum is really made easier, and there is a lot of it; coughing well and clearing the airways with Codelac Broncho is not difficult for an adult; it is more difficult for children if they do not know how to cough.
  • The medicine did not cause any allergies or any side effects.
  • Place of purchase : any pharmacy, over-the-counter.

Bottom line : I highly recommend a good mixture of Codelac Broncho with thyme for use as prescribed by a doctor for the treatment of severe and even advanced coughs, as well as for relieving attacks of dry, exhausting cough and quickly turning it into a wet and productive one. Of course, you can take the inexpensive and no less effective Ambroxol, but instead I will now take the mentioned hero of the review. In my opinion, Codelac Broncho with thyme is a very powerful drug; if the cough is moderate, then it is better to use something else.

PHARMACHOLOGIC EFFECT

Combined expectorant drug. It has a mucolytic and expectorant effect, and also has anti-inflammatory activity. The effect of the elixir Codelac ® Broncho with thyme is due to the pharmacological properties of its components.

Ambroxol has a secretomotor, secretolytic and expectorant effect, normalizes the disturbed ratio of serous and mucous components of sputum, and increases the secretion of surfactant in the alveoli. Reduces the viscosity of sputum and promotes its removal.

Sodium glycyrrhizinate has anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. It has a cytoprotective effect due to its antioxidant and membrane-stabilizing activity.

Enhances the effect of endogenous glucocorticoids, providing anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects.

Due to its pronounced anti-inflammatory activity, it helps reduce the inflammatory process in the respiratory tract.

Thyme herb extract contains a mixture of essential oils that have an expectorant and anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, this extract has weak antispasmodic and reparative properties.

Codelac is a long-known and effective cough medicine. It copes with any type of it, acts quickly and over a long period. The medicine is suitable for the treatment of children over 2 years of age, but in pediatrics it is used with caution due to the codeine contained in the composition.

Today, children are most often prescribed new forms of the drug Codelac with a safer composition and without codeine. For dry cough, “Neo” is used, and “Broncho” is used to remove phlegm.
We reviewed them in this article.

Codelac has expectorant and analgesic properties.

Codelac Neo - fight against non-productive cough

The active substance of Codelac Neo is butamirate. It reduces irritation of the bronchi and trachea, has a moderate anti-inflammatory and expectorant effect. Does not affect breathing and does not cause addiction. Used for obsessive non-productive (dry) cough in acute and chronic form.

It acts quickly - within an hour, and the effect lasts about 6 hours.

Release forms of Codelac Neo:

  • drops (5 mg of butamirate per 1 ml)
    - suitable for babies from 2 months;
  • syrup (1 ml 1.5 mg of active ingredient)
    - prescribed for toddlers from 3 years old;
  • tablets (50 mg of active substance per 1 piece)
    - used to treat children from 12 years of age.

The only contraindication for young patients is intolerance to the components of the medication. During treatment, side effects such as nausea, allergies, and drowsiness may occur. Judging by reviews from parents, the product rarely causes negative reactions in children. You can buy it without a doctor's prescription.

Syrup

The drug is sold in bottles of 100 and 200 ml. In addition to the medicine itself, each box contains instructions for use () and a double-sided measuring spoon. The product is a liquid with a vanilla odor and sweet taste.
In pharmacies, its average cost is 150 rubles (per 100 ml bottle).

The syrup is taken before meals
according to the regimen prescribed by the doctor. There is no need to dilute it. If the pediatrician has not recommended any special instructions, give the child the drug according to the instructions - 3 times a day, no longer than five days.

  • 3–6 years - a large measuring spoon, i.e. 5 ml (15 ml per day);
  • 6–2 years - 2 large spoons, i.e. 10 ml (30 ml per day).

Natalya, Lisa's mother:

“The syrup is very sweet and tasty, children drink it with pleasure. I liked that the manufacturer provided a lid that a small child cannot open.

To unscrew it, you must first press and then unscrew it. Very comfortably! My daughter constantly climbs everywhere, and it’s difficult to hide something tasty from her.

The medicine itself is inexpensive and effective; it quickly turns a dry cough into a wet one.”

Drops

In the cardboard box you will find instructions and a glass dropper bottle (20 ml) with the medicine. This form of release ensures the precise dosage required for treating the smallest children. Price - about 230 rubles.

Codelac Broncho with thyme - treat wet cough

Codelac Broncho is a combination drug that eliminates the causes of sputum and facilitates its removal. The complex effect of the product is due to the following components:

  • glycyrrhizic acid - has antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects;
  • ambroxol and soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • thyme extract (in children's elixir) - heals the bronchial mucosa damaged by cough and infection;
  • thermopsis (in tablets) - has an expectorant effect.

Codelac with thyme: what cough is this drug used for?

Codelac broncho weakens the cough reflex and promotes the clearance of mucus from the respiratory tract.

Codelac Broncho is prescribed for respiratory diseases accompanied by the formation of sputum (bronchitis, COPD, pneumonia and others). Antitussive drugs hinder its action, so they are not used in parallel.

The medicine rarely causes allergies or other side effects. It is prescribed with caution for renal and liver failure, stomach ulcers, and bronchial asthma.

Codelac Broncho is considered the most effective remedy among analogues based on ambroxol, which is confirmed by positive reviews from patients. Available in the form of tablets (for children over 12 years old) and elixir (for children over 2 years old). A little more about him.

Elixir

It is a light brown liquid in a glass bottle with a volume of 50, 100 or 125 ml. The product comes with a measuring spoon (double-sided) and instructions. During storage, a sediment forms, which is eliminated after shaking the bottle. The approximate price of the elixir is 140 rubles (per 100 ml).

You need to take the medicine 3 times a day during meals.

  • 2–6 years - a small measuring spoon (2.5 ml each) at a time, i.e. 7.5 ml per day;
  • 6–12 years - large measuring spoon (5 ml), 15 ml per day.

Duration of use: 5 days. A longer course is determined by the doctor.

Daria, mother of Vika and Sasha:

“When one child in a family gets a cold, the second one also gets sick. I prefer to buy drugs that are suitable for both my three-year-old daughter and my ten-year-old son. It's more practical and economical.

This elixir has clear instructions and a convenient spoon for dosing: on one side for babies, and on the other for older children. The taste is, of course, not for everyone, but it helps quickly. Within half an hour, phlegm is removed, and breathing is much easier.

The drug is sold in almost every pharmacy, the price is affordable.”

What to replace the medicine with?

To treat dry cough in children, medications such as:

  • and - analogues of Codelac Neo (for children) according to the active substance. Available in the form of drops and syrup, they have identical properties and contraindications.
  • Bronholitin is an effective, but not the safest, remedy suitable for children over three years of age. Contains ethanol and has many contraindications.
  • Glycodin is prescribed to children over 1 year of age. Not suitable for patients with bronchial asthma and liver dysfunction.

Analogues of Codelac Broncho (expectorant):

  • — a reliable and safe drug for the youngest patients;

Codelac with thyme: what cough is this drug used for?

An analogue of the drug Codelac Broncho - Gedelix - syrup helps get rid of the reason why the child has a cough.

  • - a long-known and effective remedy for children from 3 years old;
  • - a medicine for babies older than one year, contraindicated for peptic ulcers of the digestive system.

The components of each product can cause allergies in a child. If your baby has an individual intolerance to the drug, use a drug with a different active ingredient for treatment. A doctor will help you choose it.

The range of cough medications is huge, and many of them are sold without a doctor's prescription. This does not mean that they are absolutely safe and can be used at the first manifestations of the disease.

The choice of remedy depends on the nature of the cough, accompanying symptoms, individual characteristics and age of the patient. Therefore, only a pediatrician can prescribe medications to a child.

PS: Just Codelac - differences between the adult version

The drug is produced in the form of yellow-brown tablets with inclusions. Its cost ranges from 140 to 300 rubles and depends on the pharmacy and region of sale. The product is produced by the domestic company Pharmstandard. Since 2003, this manufacturer has been developing and supplying affordable but high-quality products.

Codelac with thyme: what cough is this drug used for?

Codeine, which is part of the drug, belongs to the group of narcotic analgesics.

The medicine acts 30 minutes
(maximum hour) after application, the effect lasts 2–6 hours.
The duration of treatment and dosage is determined by the doctor.

Lisa, Pasha's mother:

“I used to buy myself a simple Codelac for a cough. I know that this is a strong drug with codeine, so I was very surprised when the pediatrician prescribed some kind of “Neo” for my son. It turned out that the names and manufacturer are the same, but the composition is completely different! The prescribed medicine helped quickly.

The doctor said that it is safer than regular Codelac and does not contain codeine. When the dry cough went away, we switched to the Broncho version. This remedy removes phlegm. The result was such a comprehensive treatment. The child drank the syrups with pleasure, there were no side effects or allergies.”

Codelac relieves non-productive cough
caused by any bronchopulmonary disease. Its effective action is explained by the combined composition:

  • sodium bicarbonate (soda)
    - reduces the viscosity of sputum;
  • licorice
    - has an antispasmodic effect;
  • thermopsis herb
    - accelerates the removal of sputum, stimulates the respiratory center;
  • Codeine
    is a narcotic analgesic that acts on the cough center, reducing the symptoms, regardless of its cause.

With prolonged use, the drug causes addiction.

An overdose can result in severe side effects: depression of the respiratory system, effects on peristalsis, loss of coordination, headache and other unpleasant symptoms. For these reasons, since 2012, over-the-counter sales of drugs containing codeine have been prohibited in Russia. Due to its composition, Codelac is prescribed to children only in extreme cases.

Reviews

Maria, 31 years old

After a long cold, I was left with a strong, wet cough that lasted for two and a half weeks. My therapist recommended that I take Codelac, and I also read positive reviews on the Internet. Already on the first day of taking it, I felt relief, after 5 days there was practically no cough left. I recommend!

Elena, 42 years old

A friend advised me to take Codelac Broncho for a dry cough, but my doctor clarified that the drug should be used for the wet form of the symptom. I remembered the properties of the medicine in time when I noticed a cough with phlegm in my son. When taking the product, being thick and viscous at first, the secretion when my son coughed up gradually became more liquid, and later the cough went away.

Svetlana Anatolyevna, 47 years old

I am a pharmacist by training, so I always study its composition before purchasing a drug. Codelac is good because it does not contain codeine. I would like to note the low cost of the drug, in contrast to similar drugs. The medicine really helped my husband and me, we got rid of the cough in less than a week.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Codelac Broncho with thyme is a combined drug with mucolytic and expectorant action with anti-inflammatory activity. Used to treat cough.

The pharmacological effectiveness of the elixir is due to the properties of its active components:

  • ambroxol: has a secretomotor, secretolytic and expectorant effect, normalizing the ratio of sputum components (serous and mucous), helping to increase the secretion of surfactant in the alveoli; reduces the viscosity of sputum and improves its discharge;
  • glycyrrhizinate (glycyrrhizic acid and its salts): has anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects; due to antioxidant and membrane-stabilizing activity, it exhibits cytoprotective effectiveness; improving the function of endogenous glucocorticosteroids, enhances the antiallergic and anti-inflammatory effect. The pronounced anti-inflammatory activity of the substance inhibits inflammatory processes in the respiratory tract;
  • thyme herb extract (mixture of essential oils): has an expectorant and anti-inflammatory effect; has weak reparative and antispasmodic properties.

Review: Expectorant "Codelac Broncho" with thyme - Cough syrup. How not to make things worse

Attention! Before using medications, consult a specialist!

fast and efficient; price

Disadvantages appear if used incorrectly

This medicine is intended to treat wet cough. It has a triple effect. It simultaneously has a mucolytic, expectorant and anti-inflammatory effect. That is, it is able to dilute sputum, improve its output and fight the development of inflammation. I only used it once.

I can say that this is certainly a strong and effective remedy. But I won't use it anymore. And if I do, it will be with great caution.

I had a cough that was difficult to clear sputum. The doctor was afraid that the sputum that had accumulated inside would turn into inflammation.

Therefore, I was prescribed this syrup to reduce the viscosity of sputum. It was necessary to drink for five days, and it was assumed that by this time everything should be back to normal. I was confident of success, because I had repeatedly used Codelac Neo syrup for dry cough from the same manufacturer, which works great and quickly.

But due to the fact that Codelac Broncho not only thins mucus, but also increases its quantity due to its expectorant effect, the cough not only did not go away, but became even stronger and more profuse. After five days, it didn’t even think about ending.

At first, the cough really became milder, but soon there was so much phlegm that I simply choked on it, and at night I woke up from its attacks. As soon as the syrup was stopped, complete recovery occurred.

Therefore, after trying everything on myself, I can say the following.

Firstly, it is better to avoid two-in-one products altogether. After all, there are many cough syrups that have either an expectorant or mucolytic effect. After all, most often you need one thing.

For example, if you have trouble clearing your throat, it’s enough to simply reduce the thickness of the mucus, and then everything will start to fly out by itself when you cough. Moreover, it is not necessary to take syrups immediately. Sometimes it is enough just to drink a lot, because the viscosity of the blood has a direct relationship with the viscosity of the mucus.

It also helps to breathe humid street air or use a nebulizer. Sometimes at the beginning of the disease there is a dry, barking, paroxysmal cough, accompanied by pain in the chest. Such a cough must be converted into a wet one so that all the nasty stuff comes out. Mucolytic syrup can also help a lot here.

And only if the liquefaction of sputum does not lead to coughing up, you will need a syrup with an expectorant effect. It will increase the amount of phlegm, so the cough will become much stronger, and the phlegm will come out faster. But then you need to stop in time.

Because, it is clear that if you continue to drink this remedy, the cough will never stop. And many continue to drink it, waiting for the cough to go away. Therefore, as soon as the phlegm starts to appear, you need to stop drinking Codelac Broncho.

Although, personally, I think that simple herbal infusions have an excellent expectorant effect. They are completely safe in composition, and their effects are not so intense. You definitely won’t be able to choke on them. Therefore, despite the fact that the instructions for this drug say that it can be used in children from 2 years old, I would never do this.

And precisely because of its expectorant properties. I don't believe a two year old can expectorate properly. And I’m just afraid that during nightly coughing attacks, he will one day choke or suffocate. Therefore, even if a child needs wet cough syrup, it is only mucolytic.

And if necessary, then use herbal infusions, such as thyme or coltsfoot for coughing. Secondly, in no case should you take Codelac Broncho with antitussive drugs at the same time. You need to understand very well the difference and why and for what you are taking this or that medicine.

If you first liquefy the phlegm, then increase its amount, and then, after drinking a cough medicine, stop it, then all this phlegm will accumulate inside, inflammation will begin and it will all end with pneumonia in the hospital. And even the anti-inflammatory effect of Codelac Broncho will not help you.

Therefore, you can’t just go to the pharmacy, buy something for a cough, or even better, several different remedies at once and drink it all at the same time. Moreover, I can’t even imagine how you can go to the pharmacy and buy Codelac Broncho yourself. Because for diseases of the upper respiratory tract, such as simple snot, pharyngitis, such syrups are useless.

They are used only when things are more serious, for example, bronchitis, pneumonia. But such diseases cannot be treated at home. And accordingly, medications for them are prescribed only by doctors. In addition, Codelac Broncho has quite a few side effects and contraindications, which you should definitely pay attention to.

But, if you know for sure that you need a product like Codelac Broncho, with triple action, then you can safely buy and use it. It is very effective and fast. The active ingredients are ambroxol and glycyrrhizic acid. It contains no codeine or other addictive drugs. It was developed and produced in Russia, which is why it costs a penny.

Very young children should not take it; it is only allowed from the age of two. Along with thyme extract, the drug also contains ambroxol.

"Codelac Broncho with thyme" as part of complex therapy for acute bronchitis in children

Comments

Zaitseva, Zh.Zh.Karalskaya, department. pediatrics FPK and teaching staff of the State Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education Saratov State Medical University named after. V.I. Razumovsky

It is well known that respiratory diseases occupy a strong leading position among diseases of children of early and preschool age. In the structure of respiratory diseases in children of these age groups, 30-40% are bronchitis.

  • The most common symptom of bronchitis is cough, the appearance of which indicates the ineffectiveness of mucociliary clearance.
  • A frequent dry or unproductive wet cough can be considered a pathological symptom, since it significantly disrupts the well-being of a sick child and often deprives him of sleep and appetite.
  • A wet, productive cough is an important protective act aimed at clearing the airways of mucus and restoring bronchial patency.

To accelerate the clinical effect, it seems advisable to introduce into medical practice combination drugs that have a comprehensive effect on the main pathogenetic links of respiratory diseases.

Such drugs include the innovative development of the Russian company Pharmstandard-Leksredstva OJSC - the drug Codelac Broncho with thyme, dosage form - elixir.

Unlike another drug in the Codelac line, aimed at treating dry cough - Codelac Phyto, the elixir - Codelac Broncho with thyme - is intended for the treatment of respiratory tract diseases with the formation of viscous sputum and does not contain codeine.

The clinical effects of Codelac Broncho with thyme are due to the pharmacological properties of its components.

  • Ambroxol, having a mucolytic and expectorant effect, reduces the viscosity of sputum and promotes its discharge, and also increases the secretion of surfactant.
  • Sodium glycyrrhizinate has cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Sodium glycyrrhizinate also has an antiviral effect.
  • Thyme herb extract contains a mixture of essential oils that have expectorant, anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effects.

In order to study the effectiveness and safety of the drug “Codelac Broncho with thyme” as part of complex therapy in children with diseases of the lower respiratory tract, accompanied by a cough with difficult sputum discharge, a comparative study was conducted. The study was conducted at Saratov State Medical University named after. V.I. Razumovsky at the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Advanced Training and Teaching Staff.

Patients and research methods

The study involved 60 children aged 2 to 6 years suffering from acute bronchitis. The diagnosis of acute bronchitis in all patients was established based on typical clinical manifestations.

The effectiveness of therapy was studied using a single protocol according to the dynamics of the reverse development of the main clinical manifestations of bronchitis.

To assess the severity of the main symptoms of bronchitis, we used a scoring system, where: 0 - absence of symptom; 1 - easily expressed; 2 - moderately expressed; 3 - severe symptom.

All patients were divided into 2 groups. The 1st group consisted of 40 children who used the combined drug “Codelac Broncho with thyme,” an elixir, as a cough treatment. Group 2 (comparison group) included 20 children receiving the single drug ambroxol for the treatment of cough.

All children of groups 1 and 2 had acute bronchitis as the main diagnosis. From the first day of observation, children of group 1 received Codelac Broncho with thyme, an elixir in an age-specific dosage, i.e. 2.5 ml of elixir 3 times a day. The duration of treatment with this drug averaged 6.9±0.11 days.

Children of the 2nd group received ambroxol in an age-specific dosage. The duration of treatment with this drug averaged 7.0±0.14 days.

The results obtained are presented in the table.
